Diamondbacks Return Rule 5 Pick Nick Green To Yankees

By George Miller | March 24, 2019 at 4:12pm CDT

The Diamondbacks will return Rule 5 selection Nick Green to the Yankees, per a Yankees team announcement (Twitter link). After clearing waivers, Green, who turns 24 tomorrow, will rejoin his former club, having fallen short of the Diamondbacks’ Opening Day roster.

Green’s problems in spring training stemmed from a lack of control, as he walked 11 batters in 13 1/3 innings. Green was chosen by the D-Backs in the Rule 5 Draft after a successful season at High-A, in which he posted a 3.28 ERA in 115 1/3 innings. Green will now return to the Yankees organization, though the team is not required to place him on its 40-man roster.

Minor Moves: Ortiz, Robinson, Pirates, Green, Wimberly

By Steve Adams | May 31, 2013 at 3:11pm CDT

Here are your minor moves from around the league for Friday…

  • The Blue Jays have announced that Ramon Ortiz and Clint Robinson cleared waivers and were outrighted off the 40-man roster, per Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson Smith (on Twitter). Ortiz was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo, while Robinson was outrighted to Double-A New Hampshire. Both were designated for assignment earlier this week.
  • Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal tweets that the Pirates have acquired Triple-A right-hander Graham Godfrey from the Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations. The 28-year-old Godfrey has amassed 46 Major League innings — all with the Athletics – and posted a 5.09 ERA with 4.5 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9.
  • The Pirates have acquired Triple-A lefty Atahualpa Severino from the Royals in exchange for cash considerations, tweets Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. Severino, 28, has a 3.40 ERA, 7.9 K/9 and 5.4 BB/9 in 156 1/3 career innings at Triple-A. He received a brief taste of the Major Leagues with the Nationals back in 2011, totaling 4 2/3 innings of relief.
  • The Marlins have outrighted infielder Nick Green to Triple-A New Orleans, according to the PCL's Transactions page, meaning that he cleared waivers after being designated for assignment Wednesday.
  • The Braves released minor league outfielder Corey Wimberly, according to the International League Transaction log. The 29-year-old hit .234/.268/.351 in 25 games (83 plate appearances) for Triple-A Gwinnett this season.
  • The Indians announced (via Twitter) that they have signed right-hander Chris Jakubauskas and assigned him to Triple-A Columbus. The 34-year-old has a 5.58 ERA in 166 big league innings and last saw the Majors with the Orioles in 2011. Jakubauskas spent 2012 in the D-backs and Blue Jays organizations, and he appeared in eight Triple-A games for the Brewers this season. He has a 3.75 ERA in 175 career innings at Triple-A.

Marlins Designate Nick Green For Assignment

By Steve Adams | May 29, 2013 at 1:09pm CDT

The Marlins have announced that Nick Green has been designated for assignment to clear roster space for Ed Lucas, according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports (on Twitter).

This marks the second time that the Marlins have designated the 34-year-old Green for assignment this season. Green cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A following his first DFA. The infielder is hitting .236/.302/.327 for the Fish in 65 plate appearances, and he's gone just 4-for-27 since being selected to the big league roster for a second time this season.

Lucas is being called up to a Major League roster for the first time despite being 31 years of age. The Dartmouth product was an eighth-round pick by the Royals back in 2004. In 196 plate appearances for Triple-A New Orleans this season, the versatile infielder is hitting .304/.354/.453 — a marked improvement from his career .265/.337/.403 Triple-A batting line.

Marlins Outright Nick Green To Triple-A

By edcreech | May 5, 2013 at 1:45pm CDT

Infielder Nick Green has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A by the Marlins, reports Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. Green had been designated for assignment on Thursday.

Green, however, could back be with the Marlins soon, according to Frisaro. Donovan Solano has missed the last two games after tweaking his left oblique against the Phillies Friday night. If Solano is placed on the disabled list, Green is a candidate to replace him; but, the Marlins would have to clear a spot on the 40-man roster to do so.

Green has hit .321/.344/.500 with a home run in 34 plate appearances for the Marlins this year. The offensive prowess by the 34-year-old is somewhat of a surprise considering he owns a career slash line of .237/.304/.351 in parts of eight MLB seasons with the Braves, Rays, Yankees, Mariners, Red Sox, Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Marlins.

Marlins Designate Nick Green For Assignment

By Steve Adams | May 2, 2013 at 2:46pm CDT

The Marlins have designated infielder Nick Green for assignment and selected the contract of outfielder Matt Diaz from Triple-A New Orleans, according to Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post (on Twitter).

It was reported yesterday that this was a likely outcome for Green, who hit .321/.344/.500 with a home run in 34 plate appearances for the Fish. However, the 34-year-old has a lifetime batting line of just .237/.304/.351. In parts of eight Major League seasons, the journeyman has seen time with the Rays, Dodgers, Marlins, Mariners, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays and Braves.

Defensively, Green has graded out as an above average shortstop and an average second baseman, according to UZR and The Fielding Bible. Neither is a fan of his limited body of work at third base (242 innings).

Marlins Likely To Designate Green For Assignment

By Zachary Links | May 1, 2013 at 5:47pm CDT

Barring an unforseen setback, the Marlins are set to designate Nick Green for assignment, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.  Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria is eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday and chances are he will be reinstated, meaning that the club will have to make roster space for him.

Green, 34, is understandably disappointed by the pending move as he has been playing well for the Marlins.  The infielder has a .292/.321/.417 slash line so far this year in a small sample size of 30 plate appearances.  For his career, Green has hit .237/.304/.349 across eight big league campaigns.

The veteran signed a minor league deal with the Marlins in January and was called up earlier this month.  Green spent the bulk of 2012 in Triple-A, where he hit .344/.397/.599 in 63 games for New Orleans.

Minor Moves: Townsend, Royals, Green, Geltz

By Jeff Todd | March 26, 2013 at 9:37pm CDT

Here are some of today's minor moves:

  • Tyler Townsend, an Orioles' first base prospect who impressed when healthy but could not overcome his myriad injuries, has announced his retirement, reports Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com. Despite his "great swing," Townsend ultimately "was just not enjoying the process" due to the series of hamstring, wrist, and hip injuries he suffered, explained O's director of player developmet Brian Graham.
  • The Royals have released minor league pitchers Michael Giovenco, Jose Jimenez, Leondy Perez, and Elisaul Pimentel, reports Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star. K.C. originally acquired Pimentel before the 2010 trade deadline along with catcher Lucas May, in a deal that sent Scott Podsednik to the Dodgers.
  • Marlins infielder Nick Green has been "sent down" by Miami and "may consider opting out" of his deal with the club, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman tweets. Green elected free agency when he was outrighted to Triple-A by the Marlins last fall, only to return to the club on a minor league deal in January.
  • Righty Steve Geltz was outrighted by the Angels today and will head to the club's Triple-A affiliate, MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports on Twitter. The move opens a 40-man roster spot for the Angels. Geltz, 25, saw his first big league action last year for L.A., logging just two innings in relief. While Geltz posted a 0.36 ERA in 25 1/3 Double-A innings last year, he sported a 5.08 ERA in his 33 2/3 innings at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Marlins To Sign Mike Wuertz, Nick Green

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 15, 2013 at 8:47pm CDT

We'll track the day's minor moves right here…

  • The Marlins agreed to sign reliever Mike Wuertz to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training, according to the Beverly Hills Sports Council (via Twitter). The 34-year-old last appeared in the big leagues in 2011 with the Athletics as his lack of control (7.0 BB/9) led to his eventual release. Wuertz enjoyed success earlier in his career with the Cubs where a high K/9 ratio (9.3) with stronger command made him an asset to the Chicago bullpen. The newest member of the Marlins organization did not pitch at any level during the 2012 season.
  • Miami also struck a minor league deal with infielder Nick Green that includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. The veteran will have an"excellent chance" to make the team as a backup infielder, Frisaro writes. Green, 34, appeared in seven games with the Marlins in 2012, but he spent more time at Triple-A, where he posted a .344/.397/.599 batting line with 12 home runs in 237 plate appearances. Green battled a thumb injury last year, but has since recovered.

Minor Moves: Accardo, Royals, Green

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 18, 2012 at 6:06pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around MLB…

  • The Athletics announced that Jeremy Accardo has cleared outright waivers and has chosen to become a free agent.  Accardo posted a 4.82 ERA in 37 1/3 innings with the Indians and A's in 2012, with his Oakland experience amounting to just two innings after signing with the club in August.
  • The Royals announced that they re-signed five players to minor league contracts: right-handers Juan Gutierrez and Devon Lowery, catcher Max Ramirez, infielder Matt Fields and outfielder Nick Van Stratten.
  • Infielder Nick Green, who was outrighted to the Marlins' Triple-A affiliate yesterday, has elected free agency, according to MLB.com’s transactions page. Green, 34, appeared in seven games for Miami this past season, playing second base, third base and shortstop.

Outrighted To Triple-A: Tufts, Green, Murphy

By Mike Axisa | October 17, 2012 at 9:08pm CDT

Let's keep track of the day's outright assignments right here as clubs get their 40-man rosters in shape prior to the offseason…

  • The Rangers announced that right-hander Tyler Tufts was outrighted to Triple-A Round Rock after being activated from the 15-day disabled list.  Tufts appeared in 19 minor league games last season before undergoing stomach surgery.  The move leaves Texas with 39 players on their 40-man roster.
  • The Marlins have outrighted infielder Nick Green to Triple-A according to Clark Spencer of The Miami Herland (on Twitter). The 34-year-old Green hit .174/.208/.304 in 24 plate appearances for Miami this season and is a .236/.303/.347 career hitter in the big leagues.
  • The Marlins have also outrighted utility man Donnie Murphy to Triple-A according to Spencer. Murphy, 29, hit .216/.281/.379 in 129 plate appearances for the Fish this year. He's a .205/.270/.373 career hitter in the show.
  • The Marlins have also outrighted infielder Gil Velazquez to Triple-A according to Spencer. The 33-year-old hit .232/.246/.250 in 57 plate appearances for Miami this year.
