The Padres have inked reliever Adam Warren, per a club announcement. It’s a one-year deal with a club option. Warren, a client of Full Circle Sports Management, is promised $2.5MM on the contract, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter links). That includes a $2MM salary for 2019 and a $500K buyout on a $2.5MM option.
Southpaw Jose Castillo was placed on the 60-day injured list to create roster space. He is dealing with a flexor strain that is obviously considered a fairly significant malady.
Outside of a forgettable 2016 run with the Cubs, Warren has steadily produced good results at the MLB level. All said, he has thrown 463 2/3 innings of 3.42 ERA pitching. Warren carries only 7.8 K/9 in the aggregate, but he had boosted his strikeout numbers over the past two years — at least, that is, until he was dealt to the Mariners in the middle of the 2018 season. Warren racked up 11.1 strikeouts per nine in his first thirty frames of the year but dropped back to 6.2 K/9 down the stretch in Seattle.
Warren projects as another solid arm within a Padres bullpen that was already one of the team’s strengths in 2018. Led by Kirby Yates and Craig Stammen, San Diego’s relief corps has added a pair of notable veterans in the last two weeks, between Aaron Loup and now the Warren signing. Warren has pitched as a multi-inning reliever in the past, and perhaps could even be deployed as an “opener” should San Diego choose to adopt that strategy.
I wonder if Padres are a dark horse to land Keuchel or Kimbrel. Potentially taking aim at the division crown or a wild card spot
Always loved him. Hope he does well in SD
Now all that’s left of the relief market is Kimbrel, Madson, Goeddel, Johnson, Sipp, De La Rosa, and Ramos.
This better come with a DFA of Bryan Mitchell.
Nope, Castillo to the 60 day dl
Uggghhh.
How do he and Pirela keep ducking the DFA line is beyond me.
People keep breaking lol
It’s on twitter
Maybe they aren’t as bad as you think? Saying it over and over again doesn’t make it true!
@bum
i’ve devised a theory, the only logical conclusion i can come to, that pirela and mitchell split the bill on a PI to dig up dirt on preller to help blackmail themselves permanent careers in SD. there’s no other reasoning to suggest otherwise
AJ Preller must have been on some Yankees backfield 10 years ago and seen Pirela and Mitchell as young prospects in the Yankees system, whatever happened then is anybody’s guess.
Fast forward to today, both gentleman have lifelong job security.
I want a full investigation performed on those guys apartments. The information they have on Preller must be unfathomable. Those guys have no place in Major League Baseball lol
Hahahahahahha!!!!
Yes!! Soooo good! Lol
Sadly they’re not going to DFA Pirela when he still has a minor league option and they have guys who can be placed on the 60-day DL.
+bleacher
Lol he probably doesnt know who Bryan Mitchell or Jose Pirela is.
He was there reward for taking headly as a Yankee fan feel I owe you guys apologies for that..
clean it up dude
Closing the gap with the Dodgers. Dodgers took a step backwards this year, while Pads added Machado and Richards.
Dodgers added Pollock and get Seager back
They lost a great defender in Puig whose stats did not include number of times he intimidated base runners. Puig’s offense and Pollock are similar. They lost a decent pitcher in Wood and are horrible at catcher now when they once had one of the best all around catchers in the game in Grandal. Friedman arrogance and Dodger fan myopia is strong.
And they lost Machado, Grandal,
Puig, Kemp, Wood and Dozier
I’m a Padres fan…. and Richards won’t be pitching this year, and IF he does the following year, you simply can’t rely on him to stay healthy. Adding Machado does not improve the Padres by 20+ wins….. the gap is still very very big until the Padres rotation is figured out, Hosmer performs at least close to expectations, we see if Urias/Tatis Jr can adjust to major league pitching, they figure out if Mejia or hedges is their guy behind home plate, and they address their outfield logjam which takes everyday at-bats away from Renfroe/Reyes…..
The Padres are getting better…. but that gap is still pretty big
No manny doesn’t improve the team by 20 games.
Sprinkle in urias, tatis, hosmer, healthy myers, they could make a push for 500 with the young arms getting their feet wet
You can also factor in the weaken dbacks and the aging giants with the uncertainty of kershaw
Also, the doyuers are not as strong as they were last year and far removed from 2017
I’d use a downvote here….here.. and here
Dodgers will continue to be the Dodgers. Not even this Homer here (me) believes the Padres have arrived yet
They aren’t as bad Kman would have you believe but there is still a lot of work to be done here
Where did I say they were bad? Stop trolling man. It’s old
Sure guy. You spew the same hate on every article but I’m the troll?
Saying the Padres are getting better, but pointing out areas that need to be addressed is “spewing hate”?? Are you the team dad or something? You are incredibly defensive over this team. To the point that a person saying “the Padres are getting better but need to address areas x,y,z…” is now considered “spewing hate”. Haha wow. Snowflake generation?
If Richards does make it back from Tommy John surgery yeah you can rely on him to stay healthy. His injuries were all UCL related and they fixed that.
You might want to look more into that…. Richards injury history extend far beyond his recent Tommy John surgery…. including bicep nerve irritation, and a severe knee injury…. no, coming back from tommy John (his second Major UCL related injury, after first trying stem cells then reinjuring it) does not mean you can count on him. He has been incredibly injury prone. Very good, when healthy. But to say he’s reliable after tommy John is just wrong.
The knee and bicep haven’t bothered him in years. Obviously there is risk involved with Tommy John surgery but if he makes it back he should be fine.
Realistically, he should have had Tommy John surgery when he first injured his UCL.
It’s a good gamble. Balsley & co have a good record with reclamation projects. Richards has already shown he can be an ace when healthy.. If it doesn’t work it’s not a big deal. The upside is huge here for 2020, especially if the Padres find their TOR guy before then
Dang, got a little excited for a second because I thought it said “Pirates” instead of “Padres”.
Man I truly feel for you. It has got to be rough being a bucs fan. They sure seem to do a good job putting a team on the field for what the sticker payroll is though. It’s got to be difficult for the team to fork over the $$$ though when the attendance is what it is. It dropped to its lowest point in ten years last year.
And worse part is trading anyone who gets good.
Red Sox should have signed Warren. Sox bullpen is going to be interesting to say the least this season!
I’m glad he didn’t sign with the Sox. Warren is one of my favorite players.
You pads fans are going to love this guy !!! While he only seems to pitch really well in ny there is a good chance he will be a good edition to your teams pen. I wish cashman got him back 🙁
I was hoping for third time but see why they opted not to but until he signs somewhere else still dreaming of gio.. but liked Warren coming back as emergency starter too… agree
You have to really like what AJ Preller has done this offseason.
He hasn’t budged with any of the outfielders which means that he has probably been low balled all offseason due to how slow moving and uncertain it was.
You go out and get Richards, Kinsler, Machado, Loup and Warren.
Another thing to pay attention to is common themes in terms of signings. All 5 of those players debuted and played a majority of their careers in the AL. 3/5 in the AL east. That’s Management adding guys who have done it before in the most competitive division in the sport. Has been that way for a while.
Excited to see if a TOR arm is next or not?
Stroman wouldn’t surprise me due to his latest antics and talks. Possibly Bauer is back in play?
Nice ….Go Rockstar!
Is Dombrowski even in the country?!?!
Guy is one of the most underrated and underappreciated players of the last few years. Solid performer and all the Yankees ever did was trade him multiple times
Can the Padres live without Mitchell now?
How did this guy NOT get a multi-year deal? Should’ve received a 2-3 year deal with the option. Option amount seems very low too. I guess the clubs are drawing a hard line against these players/agents.
It’s nice to add an arm like Warren’s, but the big news is Castillo going to the 60. Seeing him last year, was giving me hope for another shut down reliever. I hope he doesn’t need surgery and that rest will help him.
forearm injury news is scary stuff. I also thought he looked like a future closer
MLB rating of farm systems just came out with their top rated. Padres at #1 for the second consecutive year. Based on the predictions made by people who swear by prospect rankings…. the Padres WILL make the playoffs in the season 2020, or make the World Series by season 2021…. those who saw the article, know what I’m referring to. I happen to think that is a lofty goal…. as 2020 will likely be the first full seasons for Tatis, Paddack, possibly morejon or Baez (not gore yet… he will likely arrive 2021)…. and not all of those rookies can light the world on fire.
So the question stands, are the prospect ranking fans standing by that? This team will make the playoffs in one more season? If so, show me your starting roster/rotation. For discussion, I’ll throw mine out. IF the Padres stand a chance (and I don’t believe they do, I think they are more likely looking at 2021-2022 for playoffs)… but for arguments sake, here’s what I’d like to see:
2020 roster:
2B-Urias
SS- Tatis
3B- Machado
LF- Reyes
C- Mejia
1B- Hosmer
RF- Renfroe
CF- Margot
Rotation: One trade/FA SIGNING (up for debate…. syndegaard, Bauer, etc), Paddack, Morejon, Baez, Quantrill.
Lineup notes: personally, I’d like to see Reyes get at bats over Myers. It’s going to be hard to unload that contract of Myers, but in this scenario, I just imagined him being traded. Catcher will be decided this year (hopefully) and I really hope they don’t stick with hedges. As long as he is there, Mejia loses a ton of at bats. I’ll take Mejia’s bat over hedges defense. Personal preference, everyone has their own thoughts on that. But I’ve just seen enough from hedges… the bat isn’t coming along enough. I say Mejia, trade hedges, and get a defensive specialist to spell Mejia on rest days. But as long as both are on the roster, the Padres will continue splitting time…. I’d like to see 4/5 games go to Mejía…. not 2/5 one week, 3/5, back to 2/5 etc etc. figure out your starter, and give him the playing time. Rotation: I don’t think luchessi has the pure stuff to stick in this rotation once the other talent arrives (I didn’t even mention patino/gore/Espinoza…) because I think they are more likely 2021 than 2020. Quantrill was a wobbler inclusion for me…. hopefully he regains his form he had in AAA at the end of the year and grows off of that. If not, he will be replaced.
Lineup/rotation thoughts for 2020? And does that really get us in the playoffs? Personally…. I don’t think so. Not in their rookie seasons for the most part. But I do think they are on their way…
Lauer, Lucchesi and even Logan Allen are well ahead of Quantrill, Baez and Morejon. That’s not to say they can’t jump up this year, but …
Spack, that’s why my projection was for the lineup in 2020…. not this year. With Baez/morejon projected to start this year at AA, I’d imagine (all given health/performance), that if they continue on their projections, that could put them in the rotation by 2020. I don’t see Lauer/luchessi…. or even Logan Allen…. having the upside of Baez/morejon. So WHEN those guys are ready, I could see lauer/luchessi being bumped. (Luchessi maybe stays as a #5) depending on Quantrill. But this projection was for the 2020 rotation…. so not sure what lauer, luchessi, etc being ahead at this point have to do with that? Bryan Mitchell is ahead at this point also….. but when the better talent is ready, they will be making room for them.
Ps: so which are you going with? Padres make the playoffs on 2020? Or World Series in 2021?
Well, I respect your opinion, but be careful with projections. Projecting ceiling(s) is great, but also fraught with “ifs.” Morejon, for example, has tremendous upside. But he also has a few questions. He’s quickly developed physically … he has the body of a man at age 20 (he just turned 20 the other day). He’s listed at 175 pounds, which, if you take one look at him you’d know better. But along with that he’s had several bumps, including two stints on the DL last year, the second of which shut him down at 65 innings. If fully healthy, he’ll throw roughly 100 innings this year.
Baez has even more questions. Big dude. Lots of levers in that delivery, which went wrong last year. Velo down, command disappeared completely. Doesn’t mean he can’t turn it around, but projecting him in the rotation in 2020 is dubious.
There’s upside in having guys with high floors (if you know what I mean). Both Lauer and Lucchesi have that. Nothing wrong with projecting both as middle rotation guys.
I believe either Baez or Morejon will be moved in the next 12 months. Or Baez is moved to the bullpen.
save your energy. this guy hates all padres and says the prospects are all going to bust. but he’s a fan! has season tickets in sd, lake elsinor, san antonio… good stuff here
^ ummm didn’t I just list Baez, morejon, Paddack in my rotation for 2020? Hahaha dude you seriously need to get a life. Your posts and responses are getting worse and worse. They went from bad baseball opinions…. to just complete nonsense. I literally just listed Mejía, Reyes, and multiple pitchers I said I’d like to see in the 2020 lineup…. and you respond by saying I hate all Padres and prospects. Do you see how laughable that is? Your life makes me sad….
Also…. the Padres no longer have an affiliate in San Antonio. i Would think you, being such a “fan”…. would be aware of that. Oops. Open mouth, insert foot
just taking from your quotes. Please enlighten me, how many different cities do you now have season tickets for? You like to use that as a qualifier for your opinion…a lot. You have listed just about every Padre affiliate as well as SD. San Antonio was a claim of yours not too long ago
No, you weren’t taking from my quotes. You just messed up thinking they still had a San Antonio affiliate and got caught blowing it. Haha now it’s panic time.
Sorry but you’re mistaken…. again. As a resident of California, I can assure you I never claimed to have season tickets to an affiliate in San Antonio.
Not sure what kind of internet username conspiracies you think you are unraveling by claiming rooster, WCR, etc are the same person as me…. but to those who I’ve spoken with in several other forums, including the Padres website, it just makes you look even more foolish.
Do yourself a favor, if you don’t have any baseball input (and maybe even then) just don’t respond. You just end up making yourself look worse. Enjoy those San Antonio games with all those Padres prospects this year!
sure ryan
You would be missing a name or two from your list as it will take players of value to get a top of the rotation starter.
Very true. Luckily though, the Padres have plenty to choose from that I didn’t list. Patino and Logan Allen are both top 100 prospects that I didn’t list. Anderson Espinoza is another arm I’d expect to be back in the top 100 provided he gets healthy this year. It’s not crazy to imagine getting a top of the rotation type arm, while still holding onto the likes of Gore, Paddack, Morejon, Baez…. you’d just have to package more than one of them. They wouldn’t give up gore for syndegaard, but a team might take a patino PLUS Logan Allen (plus throw in names). Just my opinion. You’re right though. They’d have to give up talent to achieve that front line starter trade…. but they do have a lot to deal from. So it’s certainly not impossible
Careful with trying to trade Patiño. Dude has a lot of helium.
It is also going to be very difficult to trade Myers in your plan with his terrible contract. Just saying.
Too hard. At this point it looks like there are no takers, might as well see what he can do for us this year. Maybe build some value
Oh I agree, there are little to no takers for Myers and that contract right now. The above lineup/rotation I mentioned was simply wishful thinking/preference. Odds are, one of Renfroe/Reyes is moved. But I’d much rather this team be rid of Myers.
most of my defense of Myers is rooted in not taking a “loss”. He’s been hurt and has zero trade value. Might as well let him play though it and try to build up value. The talent is there, it just hasn’t produced a full season yet. This year is way different than years past. Environment and situation does play a big role with these guys, they are human
The Padres are a lot better this year offensively. My hope is that, along with a set position, recharges Myers. What is he being paid this year? $5.5m? Hardly worth worrying over yet. This is the final year of the cheap years..
He’s shown flashes in the past. 2019 is not a contention year, might as well roll the dice and see what he can do
Myers’ trade value could very easily be even lower a year from now as the Padres exhaust his last cheap year and he yet again spends half the year on the injured list and the other half with an OPS in the .750-.800 range.
no denying that either
damned if they do, damned if they don’t
It’s app on the pitchers and that’s a scary proposal… infield could be legendary one of the best oufield has potential it all comes down to the pitchers..now if you aquired baurs or syndagard I’d be kinda scared…
Really solid team guy—doesn’t mind multi-inning, setup or spot starts when asked to fill different roles.
Also fun to watch a reliever rely on savvy and repertoire due to a competitive but below average fastball. Usually a slider guy but when his change/split is on, he can really make lefties look bad.
I bet you all 3 Yates, Stammen, Warren all have better years than Andrew Miller, David Robertson and Kimbrel.
“Trea Turner is injury prone and Matt Kemp has more trade value than Zach Eflin” XD XD XD
And have i been proven wrong you sicko??lets see what Eflin does this year and Kemp has been traded twice in two offseasons and 3 of 5..lol
Yes you have been proven wrong. Trea Turner has spent all of 11 days on the DL for non-HBP related injuries in his entire career (and none since April 2017) and Braves and Dodgers both had to take on bad contracts to get rid of Kemp. If Eflin is so bad he can simply be non-tendered. You don’t have to take on a bad contract to get rid of him.
Can we please burry 2015? Please?
It’s just too painful!
I agree juicemane
Any news on Lamet?
He was added to the 60-day DL. They are likely going to take it easy with him. Don’t expect to see him before August at the earliest. No reason to rush him this year.
Frankly, I don’t think the Pads are going any playoffs for awhile. It is, indeed, quite exciting to have the players that we do and it will be fun to watch this team. The future is bright. The one component that spooks me, in the near term, is pitching. Our bullpen currently appears to be very strong. They will be used this year for sure. It is the starting pitching that remains a question mark. I hope the young arms come through sooner than later. Go Padres!
Farm – check
Stud bat- check
Rotation – next up!
If we get one or two SP’s before the season starts we could easily make the playoffs.
