Injured Twins slugger Miguel Sano has resumed baseball activities and could begin a rehab assignment “within a week,” manager Rocco Baldelli said Sunday (via Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com). That would put Sano on track for a return to Major League action sometime in early May. Sano’s on the mend from a cut on his lower-right Achilles, which has left third base to free-agent pickup Marwin Gonzalez and Ehire Adrianza. They’ve struggled mightily across a combined 33 plate appearances, having totaled a meager three hits (two singles and a double). Sano wasn’t nearly that woeful last year, but the 2017 All-Star’s .199/.281/.398 line in 299 plate appearances was still a major letdown. A bounce-back showing from the 25-year-old upon his return could help the Twins challenge the Indians for the AL Central crown.
Here’s the latest news from around the American League…
- Indians righty Mike Clevinger left Sunday’s start against the Blue Jays prematurely, throwing just 75 pitches over 5 innings of work. Mandy Bell of MLB.com later revealed that Clevinger’s early exit was indeed injury-related, as he experienced upper back tightness. Bell added in a subsequent Tweet that Clevinger said he will be ready to make his next scheduled start.
- Former All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran has excelled in his new role with the Yankees, writes James Wagner of The New York Times. Following his exceptional playing career, Beltran has brought his passion to an advisory role in Brian Cashman’s front office, where he develops scouting reports and offers counsel to younger players. Beltran, who had been considered for the Yankees’ vacant manager position prior to the 2018 season, would seem to have a chance to manage a Major League ballclub or serve as a primary decision-maker in a front office, if that’s what he wants.
- Longtime Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia should be available for the team’s home opener on Tuesday, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Assuming that all goes well in today’s game with Low-A Greenville, in which Pedroia will play all nine innings, he should be ready to be activated ahead of the reigning World Champions’ return to Fenway Park. He will be re-evaluated after Sunday’s game, but there is optimism that Boston will have its veteran second baseman back in the near future.
Who cares about Dustin Pedroia he is the biggest cry baby
clevinger getting pulled early bout gave me a heart attack lol
Sounds like juggy is the biggest cry baby
Is Dustin Pedroia the new David Wright now that he retired?
At least Wright had the decency to retire. Pedroia retired three years ago but never bothered to tell anyone.
Lol! Love it that is really funny dude. Good job!
Part of this thread, is about Yankees
Yankees beat the Orioles, 15-3 today.
Chris Davis went 0-for-4.
Chris Davis last recorded a base hit Sept. 14, 2018 when he doubled against Shields. He is 0 for 44 with six walks and 27 strikeouts since his last hit, including 0 for 23 with four walks and 13 strikeouts so far in 2019. Dating back to last season, Davis is an 1-for-62 slump.
Maybe he should try bunting?
Or selling Lady Kenmores
What are Lady Kenmores?
Ur showing ur age there Mrmet.. The young pups will never get that one.
nasty, nasty work
If he’s 1-for-62 that likely means he’s also 2-for-63, which is 197% better than you thought
God forbid if he happened to be 3/64, all star production.
“Davis is two shy of the mlb record for consecutive hitless at-bats by a position player.” (Source: Elias)
Perhaps, he’s worse than you thought.
espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26465739/davis-now-0-44-cl…
There are guys in the low minors that would provide better production. Give them a shot, birds.
Don’t you love that the owner who refused to use their international signing pool money, and loathed big contracts has personally signed so many bad players?
From Albert Bell to Davis he’s had some of the worst with very few good signings.
It’s a shame as Camden Yards is a beautiful place to watch a game. Been 1x. The city deserves better ownership
So, only the Sox can beat bad teams? I may be mistaken but a win and a loss doesn’t count less or more depending on which MLB team you beat? So, when the Sox play Baltimore and Davis hits well/ what will the SOX excuse be?
We play a balanced AL easy schedule. Sox has easy first month last year, this year yanks get a easier schedule. That’s right- cry baby Sox fans only see things with their special glasses on so they can attempt to think their team is so much better.
I don’t see yankees fans non stop complaining about the injuries and creating excuses like Sox fans and their horrible pitching causes. Same wound have taken the deal in the summer and if he didn’t pitch well they could have got him cheaper or decided to move on as his best days are past and he’s not a $30 mil AAV pitcher. Just like Price isn’t nor in today’s game very few starters are. They used up Betts and JD $ plus $ for their other holes and signings of core players.
Eovoldi was a total waste of $. Hard to believe another “smart and good team”
Was bidding with Boston. I heard no other teams Interested- unless I missed it and a Six fan has a link. Over $200 mil wasted on broken pitchers. Wow! The Sox are the Yankees! They are dumb too. Not getting JV cost them 2 possible WS or very deep runs. The Sox FO just like Yanks FO is too invested in analytics and not enough common sense or the tried and true eye test +player history.
The same starting pitchers partied on the Yankees third-base line last October
Interesting debate topic: is Dustin Pedroia a Hall of Famer?
I say no (and his injury problems the past few years haven’t helped), but his case is actually stronger than I thought it was when looking at the numbers.
If he can stay in the field and get some counting numbers I say yes. Though if Lou Whitaker couldnt stay even on the ballot I just don’t know.
Lou Whitaker would have been in the HoF long ago if his results were through the 90s and 2000s.
If Harold Baines got in then Pedroia deserves a while wing to himself.
Whole
Ahh Harold Baines. The new ace in the hole for any prospective HoFer.
You do realize Baines has over ONE THOUSAND more career hits than does Pedroia: 2,866 to 1,803? That The Little (rhymes with Witch) played more than 140 games in a season just SIX times compared to the 11 for Baines? How bout Baines hitting 384 HRs (two more than Jim Rice) while driving in 1628 RBI compared to the 140/724 homers and RBI’s for Pedroia?? The ONLY way that little wuss gets into the HOF is if he buys a ticket.
Your comments are (rhymes with Numb)…
It’s a shame as Camden Yards is a beautiful place to watch a game. Been 1x. The city deserves better ownership
You are dead on bro. I didn’t reLize Dustin only has 1800 hits. HOF? Six fans are delusional. The All heart and average talent Museum is the minor league HOF!! Not MLB. 1800 hits! Lol. He has 6 years of 200 hits in him? 10 years of 100 hits? No one wants a one guy with no pop who can’t stay of field.
If 2b like Lou Whitaker, Bobby Grich, and Jeff Kent can’t get in, I don’t see how you can put Pedroia in the HOF.
Tough one. It’ll be hard for him to get in if he had to retire today (40% chance?), but just a couple more 5 WAR seasons and he’s probably in the 80% range.
A couple of more 5 War seasons?
On those knees? Are you kidding us or do you enjoy fooling yourself?
He’s a part time player and the Sox are going to have a hard time deciding what to do because his bat is not sufficient for DH and his range only works when the Sox shift the SS to the right side of 2B.
Have your tissues out to watch his first game, however it would be better to record old games of Pettie than think there are any new memorable times ahead.
Yes he is HOF. He has 3 rings, rookie of the year, and AL MVP on top of his numbers.
Based off the numbers, he doesn’t quite seem a HOFer but wouldn’t be surprising if he ends up in. Being a key component of a winning big market club will likely boost his chances with the voters.
The question should be “Is Pedroia one of the greatest of all time?”
But… that’s clearly not the standard anymore.
Veterans vote for Pedroia.
If Dwight Evans couldn’t make it in the HOF then Dustin Pedroia doesn’t deserve to be in
And if Pedroia played in someplace like Kansas City or Tampa and not Boston then people would be laughing at the mention of the Hall of Fame.
It would be like asking is Evan Longoria a HOF right now. Very good career that he should be proud of, but without several more good seasons just not enough. The same could be said of Pedroia. Unfortunately for him, being 35 and his history of injuries, I can’t imagine he has much left in the tank.
Actually a pretty damn descent comparison^
What about Kinsler? I don’t think he makes it but Cano and Utley do…
Joe Mauer is in that category too. Some more health and counting stats would make it easy. Mauer does have the edge in terms of some historic achievements as a catcher, that would supplement his case anyway.
I love Dewey, but you can’t compare him to Pedroia.
Evans played in nearly twice as many games, but never dominated offensively in any season the way Pedroia did (ROY & MVP before age 25).
don’t be surpass if the laser show takes a few games to get hot, esp at the bottom of the line-up he’ll be mashing sooner vs later
Sano is playing for a contract next year. Another season like last year and he’s a non-tender candidate. I’m not sure the Twins will be in any kind of hurry to get him back if he doesn’t look good at the plate in MiLB. They might drag his rehab stint out until early June while they give him a chance to prove his bat is ready to play again.
Is Sano still looking like a football player? I don’t get to see him play much, just box scores. Isn’t he going the way of Prince Fielder? Size and health wise? Or Am I thinking about another really thick player?
No that’s him, his time spent at the dinner plate is affecting his time at the other plate…
Hope Pedroia isn’t rushing back for the home opener. Coming back too soon, after how little he played last year, is dangerous.
Sano dropped 30 pounds in offseason, learned how to eat right and built a training program. Sano will always be a big dude, but he grew up after a horrid 2018 and if not for a freak achilles laceration would be starting at 3B today. I know what many are thinking in that Sano will not be signed to an extension by Twins, but new front office (Falvey/Levine) and new manager (Baldelli) will not let a Papi-like exodus of a great talent happen again.
Before last season, all Red Sox fans said was “Stop talking about the past” to Yankees fans. Now, all they say is “We have 4 in the past 16 years.” Well guess what, the Yankees have 5 in the past 23 years.
