Blue Jays Acquire Socrates Brito

By Jeff Todd | April 2, 2019 at 1:14pm CDT

The Blue Jays have acquired outfielder Socrates Brito from the Padres, according to a club announcement. Outfielder Rodrigo Orozco goes to San Diego in return.

There’s quite a bit of change afoot in the Toronto outfield mix. The club shipped Kevin Pillar out earlier today. Anthony Alford is on his way up, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca (via Twitter). And to create 40-man space for the latest moves, the Jays shifted Dalton Pompey to the 60-day injured list.

Brito will give the Jays a left-handed-hitting, defensive-oriented option in center. He could pair there with Randal Grichuk, who seems likely to slide into the opening created by the departure of Pillar.

It was never really clear what the San Diego organization had in mind with regard to Brito, but it seems they nabbed him off waivers with an eye to flipping him. They’ll be rewarded for their efforts with Orozco, who turns 24 today and hasn’t yet played above the High-A level. The switch-hitter posted a .304/.375/.389 slash with forty walks and 53 strikeouts in 424 plate appearances last year. He also swiped 18 bags.

Anyone could claim him because the Jays would now have to put him on waivers agin if they want to send him to AAA. Since he’s out of minor league options, he has to go through this whole ordeal every time he changes organizations unless he sticks in the majors.

If he already cleared waivers and was already in the minors I think that he doesn’t need to clear again. I could be wrong but cleaning waivers are for players already on the MLB roster.

Yeah, anyone who claims him during the waiver process would have to put him on the main roster. He would have to pass through waivers without a claim to be outrighted to the minors.

Pompey to the 60 day. I’m guessing this is a Buffalo move. I don’t think they want Biggio playing outfield everyday.

Don’t know much about Orozco but his minor league #’s are pretty good. We don’t have an immediate need for outfielders, so this is a solid deal by AJ.

Padres don’t need Brito. He had no spot on our 40 man. He was about to be let go for nothing. Preller got a possible 4th/5th OF that doesn’t need to be on the 40 man as a lottery ticker for absolutely nothing. We had Brito for about a week and got something for him.

If it means keeping Alford in AAA where he needs to work on his game, fine. Alford is not entitled a promotion until he performs with the bat in Buffalo. Vlad is a different story.

Nice numbers for Brito, but it is the PCL.

There’s two. Alford needs to prove he can perform in AAA. If Alford’s spring warrants a call-up then so does Bo Bichette’s.

        That was easy.

You asked for more deserving players. Not my fault I answered your question. But hey, call up a .654 OPS player in the minors with 5 bombs in 112 games with below average defense. Sounds like a Blue Jays move. Even Dalton Pompey performed better than Alford last year.

Oh man, these Jays. So essentially the Jays traded Dwight Smith Jr and Rodrigo Orozco for Brito and international money. “Shaking head”

Pompey needs to go for good.

Alford needs to be in AAA learning how to hit.

Grichuk hits a homer or strikes out.

Hernandez is looking better in the field with his new glasses. He still can’t run defensive routes very well but “he is working on it.”

McKinney is strictly a platoon guy. Good power. good speed. good arm. Needs to work on defensive routes too.

    It that about it?

Any elite players in this list?

Yes that is it. As for elite players, Blue Jays need to spend this offseason due to the recent extensions handed out. Boston and New York will be handcuffed. Castellanos, Rendon, Strasburg, Cole should all be on the radar. Keyword is “should”.

Now the Padres should trade for KK, Wndle, Kolarak and Roe off TB giving up Myers (+ $2,000,000 a season), Gore, Paddack/Morejon (Someone along those lines) a lower 40 man prospect, and Bubba plus a lotto pitching prospect. The Rays could send ibm this and next signing period. Myers may have started out okay but the Padres are ready to get out of his contract while this also improves the outfield defense alot! Margot can still start in cf against some lefties while pinch hitting/running and being a defensive sub. They should still trade another corner outfielder and another pitching prospect for Verlander/Scherzer and sign Kimbrel plus Keuichel still being pretty low in salary. They shouldn’t have signed Hosmer to anything near the contract he got but now they’re stuck with him. This would make them pretty close to the Dodgers. I’d honestly top this splurge off with Peraltra off the Diamond backs to me my favorite in the West.

I wasn’t saying all three but Gore and a guy along those lines, Buddy Reed (I wrote bubba) and a lower level high upside prospect at low A. It may seem a little high but Myers is a huge injury risk contract. KK has injury risk himself but his contact is far more tolerable even without much offense. Wendle, although versatile, won’t play a ton for them in the future but plays three position well and should hold down 2nd with Kinsler getting rest, he’ll play some ss and third no matter what the Padres are going to protect their investments, by spelling Machado and Tatis. I think they’ll send Tatis back down at a point (to save super two at least) and Wendle can play more in that time until Urias starts to hit alot. Wendle could now or later be packaged with a picher and or prospect for an ace caliber pitcher. If he replicates or is on Pace for last year he’ll have decent trade value and gives them an eventual glut of infielders. KK turns a question mark into arguably the best defensive cf’er in the league. Margot is good and I think will hit but he is able to earn starts while providing an all-around threat off the bench. Arroyo at one year and 8-10 million netted Touki. Arroyo was finished but Myers is a drag more like Braun going forward.

Not sure what the Padres were doing with either move. Picking up Brito was a headscratcher. Brito has been terrible and his platoon splits are not good either way.

Then the Padres trade him for a 24 year old OF who ended last season in A+ and who has no power. Just 1 HR in over 400 AB last season in Dunedin.

Not sure why they got Brito, other than block AZ from getting him through waivers. Your second question….why not get something for him? He’s probably close with Olivares. Put them together. Can’t hurt. If he flames outs, so be it. Still hit over .300 and had around a .375 OBP and had about 50 ks in 400 ABs. Contact hitter. Sounds good to me

Orozco is a nothing in terms of what he has to offer the major league team. 1 HR in 400 AB means he will never see the light of day. He will be what I was when I played, just another number in the minors. Like I said above in answer to you saying the same thing above, you have just as much of a chance to make the majors as Orozco. None.
