Matt Moore To Miss Remainder Of Season After Knee Surgery

By Jeff Todd | April 17, 2019 at 2:29pm CDT

Tigers lefty Matt Moore is slated to miss the remainder of the 2019 season, the club told reporters including MLB.com’s Jason Beck (Twitter link). While the procedure was known, the prognosis comes as quite a surprise.

It had been expected that Moore wouldn’t be sidelined for more than six weeks or so, as he was slated only to undergo a common procedure to address a meniscus tear. The reason for the change in the outlook isn’t yet known, but something obviously didn’t go as anticipated.

This news represents poor fortune all around. The Detroit organization will come away with little to show for the $2.5MM it invested in Moore last winter. And Moore won’t get a full shot to boost his value before reentering the market.

The 29-year-old southpaw did turn in two scoreless outings, compiling nine strikeouts against one walk over ten frames, before going down with what seemed to be a minor injury. That included a promising jump to a 14.5% swinging-strike rate, so it’s at least conceivable that some teams will have seen enough to make an investment in the still-youthful hurler based only upon that limited showing.

Moore follows Michael Fulmer in suffering a season-ending injury. It seems the Tigers will now have little choice but to give a full run to Daniel Norris, who is facing something of a make or break year. Other depth options include Ryan Carpenter and Matt Hall. The club may at some point also take a look at some of its lauded young pitching prospects who don’t yet have 40-man roster spots.

That sucks. It was obviously a tremendously small sample size but he looked like the Matt Moore of old. That gamble didn’t pay off for Detroit.

I mean, sure. But this guy had a hard time throwing anything over the plate that didn’t get battered last year. He was throwing strikes and his velo looked good. He clearly wasn’t an ace but he could’ve been a quality back end arm. Which is more than you could ask for at that price tag.

It hasn’t for Matt Moore the last couple seasons. He has been bad against all.

Expect him to sign a cheap deal for 2020 and rebuild his value. He’s only 29. Guys like Happ and Hill have had some success at older ages. Take this time off. Enjoy your $2.5 mil and come back strong next year.

man, it must suck to only get 800k in a year. you do know it takes most people like 30 years to take home that much.

Is anyone sad? It’s an observation. They didn’t get anything for that money. He posted a 7 ERA last year so there was always the chance he got torched this year and they wouldn’t have gotten anything that way. This was a low risk gamble from the beginning. Though the tigers did appear to give out higher base salary guarantees on their one year gambles in the beginning of the season compared to the rest of the league.

Call up one of the prospects, give someone like Mize or funkhouser a shot. I get that it starts the timer on their ML time before arbitration but if they show they can produce now just extend them soon

if it was a position player I could see that but if you have no chance to compete there is no reason to rush a rotation arm up rather than let him get his footing with some minor league time. Better to just reach out to some of the unsigned arms or non prospect in the system

All jokes aside if they liked what they saw I’m sure they could have him back for the same rate they did this year and try again. It’s not as if his injury is arm related.

It would be nice if there was an available FA option to stabilize a young starting rotation and weather these injuries. If only there was an innings eating veteran than maybe won the 2015 AL Cy Young available in mid April. A veteran who could teach the young kids to make 25-32 starts a year and be a professional. But no…no one like that is available without given up can’t miss prospects. A pity /sarc.

Huh? Dallas Keuchel is going to teach the young pitchers how to make 25-32 starts? I’m almost certain the manager decides the starting rotation.

So guys can be taught to remain healthy enough to mke 25+ starts? seems like every team would hire someone like that.

        Well….RA Dickey didn’t find employment in 2018. So maybe they’d hire a 25+ start guy – with a catch.

Wonder if there is a more significant injury than what was originally thought. I’m not a doctor, but seems like a long time to be out for a torn meniscus.
