Pirates Select Bryan Reynolds, Recall Cole Tucker, Place Starling Marte On 10-Day IL

By TC Zencka | April 20, 2019 at 1:46pm CDT

1:45 pm: Per a team release, Marte will hit the 10-day IL with an “abdominal wall contusion,” while Gonzalez will be placed on the 60-day IL with a fractured left clavicle.

11:57 am:The Pirates have recalled shortstop Cole Tucker and selected the contract of outfielder Bryan Reynolds, adding both to the 25-man roster, the team announced. Reynolds will take the final remaining spot on Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster. There has been no corresponding roster moves announced, but it’s been widely speculated that Starling Marte and Erik Gonzalez may both be headed to the IL after their collision in last night’s ballgame.

Fangraphs puts Tucker and Reynolds as the #5 and #9 ranked prospects, respectively. Both will be making their major league debuts after strong showings in Spring Training this year. Tucker, 22, hit .259/.333/.356 in Double-A last year, but he’s torn his way through the Arizona Fall League, Spring Training, and his first thirteen games with Triple-A Indianapolis so far this season, where he was hitting a robust .333/.415/.579 in 66 plate appearances.

Reynolds, you may remember, joined the Pirates as part of the Andrew McCutchen trade. As MLB.com’s Adam Berry points out (via Twitter), the Pirates 25-man roster is now populated by the Pirates’ returns from the McCutchen and Gerrit Cole trades, with Michael Feliz being the only piece from either deal not currently in Pittsburgh. Kyle Crick recently returned from the injured list, Jason Martin is hitting .333/.391/.429 in limited playing time in left, Colin Moran platoons at third, and Joe Musgrove ably holds down a rotation spot for the Pirates.

How will adding 2 position players improve the rotation?

And it’s not like the rotation needs improvement; it’s been one of THE best over the past 12 months

Jeremy and smrt-I think that the bippy boy statement was done “ tongue in cheek” in response to Darkside seeming negative statement.
Some posters on this site have subtle humor which is a welcome change from the postings of some others.

Kind of expected that after seeing that crash between Marte and Gonzalez. Hope they get well soon.

The people who bash Huntingdon make no sense to me.

He took an organization that had two legit prospects and one legit MLB player in the entire system and built it into a consistent winner (aside from down years in 2016 and 2017, which was largely due to underperformance by Cole and Cutch) all while working for an owner that everyone acknowledges gives him (at best) limited resources with which to work.

With the resources Nutting provides, the Pirates would be the 2018 Orioles every single year if Huntingdon was as bad as the “fans” think. And yet…

Meanwhile, this otherwise bland game against the lowly Giants today is suddenly very interesting.

I didn’t like the Cole Tucker pick when they made it, but by all scouting reports, I was wrong and they were right. Looking forward to seeing him today.

And I love having switch hitters in the lineup, so I hope Reynolds proves to be the real deal, as well.

I totally agree with you. It amazes me when I see all of the negative posts from people who do not want to see the good, but constantly point out the negative

The Melancon trade can also fall into that as well. So many people were negative about it. Even I wasn’t to thrilled about it. However that trade has turned into one of the best closers in the MLB, and Taylor Hearn was dealt for Keone Kela. Even though Kela has struggled to start the season, he did well in his time w/the Bucs last season, and he’s still fairly young, so he could turn it around still.

I think that the Melancon trade would not have been criticized by anyone except those who are negative.
It was clear that some team was going to give him a whole lot of money after the 2016 season for a number of years.NH had no choice. It is to his credit that he made as good of a trade that he could have made.
I have been posting for well over a year on this site and it is pretty easy to tell who the negative minded or thoughtless posters are.

The Melancon deal was one of the most lopsided in recent MLB history.

The most overlooked trade in recent MLB history: Trevor Williams for an ASSISTANT pitching coach.

And while I do understand the criticism of the Archer deal (the Rays are pretty happy with their return) the fact is that Archer is giving them much more than they got out of Meadows or Glasnow.

Criticism of the Cole deal simply ignores reality. Joe Musgrove alone makes that deal look better every (5) day(s).

Plus Martin looks like a solid replacement OF until Travis Swaggerty is ready, and Moran is a solid corner infielder who has a pretty clutch bat. Really, Feliz has been the only bad player the Pirates got out of that deal.

And Feliz is still young and has shown some flashes of talent. Might yet still be a pretty good arm in the pen

While I agree Huntington has done well with trades, and works with the payroll he is given, where he has fallen short is the draft. Around 11 years overseeing the draft and it has produced two all star game appearances (Pedro and Cole, one each) in pirate uniforms.

It’s more than fair to ask questions about both his scouting staff and his player development staff. They have developed mid round gems, but not many impact players.

Then again, it’s likely that he’s working with a smaller and cheaper staff than most other teams, too.

This is why the “Huntingdon never makes any good trades” narrative especially confuses me. Staying relevant despite questionable drafting and development and rarely spending on free agency means you are making a lot of good trades.

You hope your 1st and 2nd round picks turn into All-Stars. I see no chance of the Seinfeld duo getting anywhere near that level. I just don’t know what he was thinking. These type of guys are available in the later rounds.

I also liked the addition of Martin and Reynolds in the Cole, and Cutch trades when they were made based on scouting reports here. And other sites. When they traded for Archer and included Meadows in the deal, people went off the deep end. I brought up the fact that having Martin and Reynolds allowed the deal to happen. Off course other posters scoffed. We shall see if Martin + Reynolds is less than, greater than or equal to Meadows.

I am not sure that Gonzalez is any sort of answer to play shortstop. He does have range, but the play last night illustrated that he was wandering around where he should not have been.He is suited to be a decent utilityman.
Anybody who has ever played shortstop knows that you have to decide fairly quickly whether you can get the pop up and whether the outfielder cannot. The trait should be inbred in an experienced shortstop’s dna.
I hope for the Pirates sake that Tucker can play at this level this quickly.
I think that Marte will be hard to replace also as they do not have a true center fielder now.I hope that he Is out for the minimum length of time.Reynolds many be a stretch at this point but hopefully he will hold his own against ML pitching.

Over the course of the season, Erik would’ve been fine at short. But the plan (likely) was always to have Tucker there by next season with erik as a stop gap then bench player after that.

Bryan is a center fielder and can likely stay there if marte is out en extended period.. especially if he is hitting 🙂

Glasnow 4-0 era 1.18; meadows batting.363, not a good trade. Enough said

It’s been a fine trade for the Pirates. Archer has worked out well. When the Pirates traded Glasnow, he struggled a lot with the long ball, and keeping the ball within the strikezone. I was kind of dissapointed to give up Meadows, but it hasn’t been a bad trade. Archer has been pretty good going back to last September.
