Royals Acquire Andrew Susac

By Jeff Todd | April 2, 2019 at 2:46pm CDT

The Royals have acquired backstop Andrew Susac from the Orioles, per a club announcement. Cash considerations are heading to Baltimore in return.

Susac, 29, was dropped from the 40-man roster earlier this year and failed to crack the Baltimore roster in camp. He has seen minimal MLB action in the past several seasons and accumulated just three hundred total plate appearances in five seasons of action.

With several other options available at Triple-A, the O’s obviously felt they could part with the depth. Susac will give the Royals some experience at their top affiliate. He’ll also provide organizational depth, though he’s out of options and therefore cannot be shuttled up and down with ease.

Ah yes, cash considerations. A fine prospect addition to the Orioles’ farm system.

At least it wasn’t international pool money.

You thought someone would give up a real prospect for Andrew Susac? Really?

      This site man…

Yeah, he was being sarcastic about the cash being a “fine” return for Susac, to which I replied what did he expect? I don’t see your point here.

Brewers gave up 4 years of control on Will Smith for him, so anything is possible.

While this may very well be true – the move has more to do with organizational depth. If Maldonado or Gallagher got hurt – the Royals didn’t have anybody to bring up. Dini and Viloria neither have experience even at AAA.

Gallagher will remain the backup Catcher for the Royals. Getting Susac is only in case Maldonado or Gallagher gets hurt….that’s it.

Susac has been a good minor league hitter. Never got a major league opportunity in Baltimore and ended up buried on the AAA depth chart. I think his bat could play enough at catcher if given the chance.

Maybe so he was never given an opportunity to play regularly though.

So the Brewers traded for Susac to help replace Maldonado and Lucroy. They trade Maldonado for Jett Brandy who ended up taking Susac job with the Brewers. So the Brewers no longer have any of those catchers but Maldonado and Susac end up together in Kansas City lol

wait, so if they got rid of Jett Brandy, does that mean they’re going to sign John Cognac sometime soon?

Well, he does have a ring he actually won for his participation in the 2014 MadBum Series

I would much rather have Susac as the backup over Gallager. I don’t make those decisions though. Excited to see Melendez eventually. A good 2 years but he is a special one IMO.

Man, Susac has really been bounced around. He was once considered one of the premier catching prospects in the game and heir apparent to Buster Posey. He’s barely had any looks in MLB so there’s some diamond in the rough potential here. I think it’s a good move for the Royals.

He did look quite good in his limited big league time in 2014, but injuries have been a recurring problem since then. He’ll have a clearer opportunity to stick in KC, hope he makes it.
