Yankees Place Giancarlo Stanton On Injured List

By Steve Adams | April 1, 2019 at 2:45pm CDT

2:45pm: Manager Aaron Boone tells reporters that Stanton initially felt discomfort following a swing in Sunday’s game against the Orioles (Twitter link via James Wagner of the New York Times). A postgame MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain. While an exact timetable isn’t known, Stanton will be out longer than the minimum 10 days. The YES Network’s Jack Curry tweets that Stanton will be shut down entirely for the next 10 days. The organization’s hope is that he can return before the end of April.

10:05am: The Yankees announced Monday that they’ve placed outfielder/designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list due to a left biceps strain. In his place, Clint Frazier has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. There’s no word yet from the team on the severity of Stanton’s injury or how long he is expected to be out of action.

There was no clear indication that Stanton was dealing with an injury early in the season. The slugger has a pair of hits in eight official at-bats so far but has also drawn a walk in seven of his 15 plate appearances on the young season, giving him a .600 on-base percentage through three games. The injury is a tough early blow to a Yankees club that already is already without Luis Severino, Aaron Hicks, Dellin Betances, Didi Gregorius and CC Sabathia to open the season. New York torched the Orioles in the season opener but dropped the next two games to lose the year’s first series. They’ll face the Tigers, the Orioles a second time (in Baltimore) and then the Astros (in Houston) over the next 10 days without Stanton in the fold.

With Stanton now shelved alongside Hicks and Jacoby Ellsbury, the Yankees will lean on Brett Gardner, Aaron Judge, Frazier and Mike Tauchman in the outfield mix for at least their next three series (barring any waiver claims or other additions). The injury to Stanton should allow the club to more easily work both Luke Voit and Greg Bird into the lineup at times, and it could also present some more at-bats for offseason acquisition DJ LeMahieu.

The 24-year-old Frazier, meanwhile, will get an early opportunity to rebuild some stock after a 2018 season that was marred by ongoing concussion symptoms. The longtime top prospect received only 41 plate appearances in the Majors, though he certainly held his own, batting .265/.390/.353. In 242 minor league plate appearances last season, Frazier posted an outstanding .305/.388/.562 batting line.

i know you’re probably joking but it annoys the heck out of me when all these “experts” and commentors here screamed “why would the Yanks sign Harper, they have too many OFs. Where’s be going to play, 1B”?

You can debate whether they should extend a $300 mil contract to an OF but no one cam put forth an arguement that they had “too many” OF when Gardner is showing he’s best deserved as a 4th OF ready to slide in when/if Hicks got hurt. To go a whole year hoping Judge or Stanton stay off the DL and you’re depth is Frazier, Ellsbury and the guy they traded for and sent to AAA sounds like poor judgement. That’s the only real knock on what Cashman has done this winter, especially if we could’ve signed a guy like Markakis to a short term deal that would be easy to move if Frazier forced himself back into the picture by tearing up AAA and staying healthy himself.

      We’ll see.

if they had deals in place for Hicks and Frazier signing Harper would have made sense, however, they did not, and therefore their logjam was too great for them to have good reason to sign him.

you’re comment confused me. i just explained how they have no dependable depth. where 3 games into the season and Hicks and Stanton, both guys prone to being dinged up, have exhausted our depth. Judge, Gardner and Frazier with the kid they just traded likely to be called up as the 4th OF. Ellsbury hasn’t even begun basic conditioning. Forget about throwing, catching and hitting, he’s just starting ANY athletic activity.

It is just not a great allocation of resources to put that amount of money into a position where they could just use more depth. This isn’t a 20 million dollar deal. 350 mil is a ton to put into adding a bit of depth into the OF.

A former top prospect like Frazier isn’t a bad guy to play when one of your starters go down. If anything your argument is in favor of them signing a utility guy capable of starting in the OF. Or an Adam Jones type

I get what you are saying about having too many outfielders, but there has to be some salary considerations here and will it be worth it “in case of injury”.

For sake of argument, lets assume the yanks sign bryce for 30 million a year for 10 years (i would expect he asks more since ny taxes are quite a bit higher than pa and its an even number to work with. The yankees currently sit at 226 million which is already past the limit and past first tier of balance tax which means bryce’s entire contract will be taxed at the next tier rate of around 33% for the first year. This would bring his cost to about 40M alone for first year.

Next year will be pretty much the same issue only the rates would be even higher and with what you are losing with free agents would be more than made up with the arbitration would be about the same as for what you are losing to free agency ( (Judge and Sanchez along with increase for Paxton). This will also would not factor in the cost of filling the holes left by Didi, Betances, and to lesser degree Romine, Troy, Sabathia, and Gardner.

While markakis would have been a good signing which player do you kick off the roster for him assuming he doesnt mind the bench role instead of starting.. Eat close to 50M (21 this year next year and 5m buyout essentially making making Markakis a 25M+ outfielder) for Ellsbury? Gardner who is your backup CF and leadoff guy? Stanton, Hicks, Judge?

        Hindsight 20/20.

If one of Hicks, Stanton, Judge, got injured (where they would miss more than a month of baseball) before Harper signed with Philadelphia, I’d of been clamoring for a Harper signing too. But that didnt happen. At the time of Harpers signing, the OF was crowded. Thats an undeniable fact. They had 5 healthy OFers contending for 3 spots on the field and there was no logical reason to get your 4th corner OFer for another $300MM when neither OF nor offense in general needed help.

When both Hicks and Stanton come back within a few weeks we’d be back to square one anyway with the “where would Harper play, 1B?!?”.

Who plays CF with hicks out if the Yankees don’t sign Gardner?

I know a lot of fans don’t like the Gardner signing, but he was a low cost (relatively), serviceable option in CF. What was the alternative? Maybe you can go with someone like Adam Jones, but I’m not sure that is an improvement. There wasn’t much out there for utility CF and the Yankees ultimately went with the person they were familiar with. Was it probably an overpay, sure, but I doubt they’re losing any sleep over it.

The whole thought that the Yankees should have signed Harper is shortsighted. No need to clog up their payroll with another huge contract just in case a couple guys get injured.

Plus, when they made the trade for Stanton I dont think anyone saw Harper having the season he had and getting what he got. Before the 2018 season I think most people thought Harper was going to get a much bigger contract.

Hill is a decade older than Stanton. No way the Yankees would take Rich Hill, a near 40-year old who is oft injured for Stanton. It’s not like Pederson would really add a whole lot of value to that trade either.

Frazier barely played last year, they wanted him to get regular at bats instead of sitting on the bench. Wade has played far more IF than OF and even less CF than the corners, so they wanted someone with more OF experience. They are both on the team now with Andujar’s injury so it was a good move.

Hey if you’re going to get hurt, may as well do it in April.

What’s with the injured list? Was always called the disabled list for decades…let me guess someone got offended.

Yeah. They changed the name this year. I mean to be fair, it does make more sense calling it the injured list. That’s literally what it is.

Hopefully they avoid overplaying Gardner because of the injuries. His performance goes way down when he is the lineup every day.

They shouldve dropped Tauchman and brought up both Wade and Frazier

With all the panic over the New York Yankees, did you guys do the same thing when they started 1-4 in the 1998 season? They only won 114 games that year, plus another 11 in the postseason.

Prior to the season you lost Tony Fernandez. You lost Chili Davis during the season. Ramiro Mendoza was your #5 before the arrival of El Duque. Tim Raines battled injury.

2019 Yankees are loaded. It’s the first week of the season. Relax.

TR, you’re in the wrong comment section. You are applying reason, logic and common sense. Most will not understand that we are only 3 games in to a 162 game season.

But thank you for the post, it reminds me of what this section used to be about.

This is where Tauchman goes off and hits 30 homers and bats .330, Right?

And there go the Yankees. Can’t or won’t sign an ace to save their season. Everyone is on the injured list. Can’t beat the Orioles !!?!? shame shame shame. break out the check book and pay Dallas. Like the Sox paid Sale.

At least this will help Stanton cut down on strike outs

I thought they would have brought up Wade as he had a better Spring than Frazier. Nothing like building up team morale you send him down for some guy from Colorado who had a poor Spring, and when the chance happens you bypass him for Frazier who had a poor Spring still trying to catch up! Who is really in charge?

Maybe TooLow can save the team and play 2 positions

I cannot believe it’s 4 games into the season and I promised myself I will not watch any Yankee games with Brett Gardner in the lineup. I have never been more disappointed as a Yankee fan then I am now. I have such a bad taste in my mouth that I gotta not watch games he plays in.

To all the people who said he’s only going to be a 4th out fielder and not get a lot of AB this season. I told you all that that’s incorrect he;’s going to play EVERY DAY I’m so sick as a Yankee fan.

WTF is their problem with this guy? Not only is he finished for years in the playoffs he’a .200 hitter. I mean what the Flying F is going on here?

Gardner obviously has compromising photos of Steinbrenner? Only thing that makes sense. Somebody called for Ellsbury to pinch hit last night, and the ballboy pulled up Jacobi’s obituary from 2016 I think it was. Nobody had seen him in so long, they forgot he was a Yankee before he cratered for good.

Did you catch Gardner in the win and you’re in game in 2017? Got on base 3 out of 5 times, scored 3 runs and hit a HR to give them their first lead.

You missed a hell of a game if your ban was in place back then.

The playoffs are a small sample, you play your best players. Tino was a .220 hitter for them in the playoffs, was it a mistake to play him all those years?

If this makes you this angry and upset you really need to reevaluate your priorities.
