Yankees Option Chad Green, Activate Gary Sanchez

By Jeff Todd | April 24, 2019 at 12:57pm CDT

The Yankees have announced a few notable roster tweaks. Struggling reliever Chad Green was optioned down to Triple-A to sort things out, with southpaw Stephen Tarpley recalled to take his active roster spot. And the club activated catcher Gary Sanchez while optioning down fellow backstop Kyle Higashioka.

Green has simply not been himself this year. After two outstanding campaigns in the New York bullpen, he has been bombed for 14 earned runs on 15 hits (including four dingers) in his 7 2/3 innings this season.

It’s tough timing for Green , as he is trying to set the stage for his first season of arbitration eligibility. With 2.077 years of service accrued through yesterday, he can only afford to miss 64 of the remaining potential MLB service days before the season ends if he’s to cross the threshold to a third year of service. (If he falls short of that, he could potentially still qualify for arb as a Super Two, though that’d put free agency one season further in the distance.)

The Yankees will hope they can figure out what is going on with Green. His velocity is down a bit, though he’s still sitting just under 95 with his heater, and his swinging-strike rate has dropped to 10.4%. While his groundball rate has shot up to 48.4% — a level he hasn’t worked at since he was in the minors — Green is giving up loads of hard contact.

Meanwhile, the club will welcome the return of Sanchez to a lineup that has been racked by injuries. The slugger bounced back quickly from a calf strain. Several other key players remain sidelined, but the hope is that a variety of fill-in pieces can keep the team above water in the meantime.

Lol, this was right after Boone said postgame last night that they had no plans to send down Green. But this is definitely the right move. He’s been horrible. A little leaguer can hit him right now.

Looks like quite the hurdle to clear for the future HOF pitcher. How fast the mighty has fallen.

I think Green needs to work on his other pitches more. Simply having a 96mph fastball isnt enough

And a dead straight fastball. Now mostly less than 96.

Green’s offspeed pitches have been beyond garbage this season, and he’s inexplicably been going to them more than ever. The pseudo splitter/change nonsense he’s been using is just a flat, cement mixing meatball. He’s relied almost entirely on his hard, high-spin rate four seamer to great success in the past. He needs to rediscover that approach.

The Yankees bullpen ERA is 4.25. By removing Chad Green it drops all the way down to 3.00

And adding Sanchez brings it back up to 4.25.

Yankees pitchers have a 3.04 ERA when Sanchez is behind the plate this year, but okay.

Which is even with the fact that he had what, 5 errors before the injury? Yet for some reason, no passed balls, which some people thought he already would have had, I admit I was one of them, because even though I do really like him, I don’t think I’ve seen a worse defensive catcher than him. Go on, say what you will, but I’ve seen enough of it to know it, plus he had double digit errors and passed balls last season despite playing in only 89 games.

GS running back to the screen whether a passed ball or wild pitch he should have blocked do not impact ERA. They impact W/L. I see he had two PBs in his short rehab start. Romine and Kyle don’t hit much, but they catch and block the ball.

Its all about balance I believe the Yankees will exhaust every possible effort to keep Sanchez behind the plate ..and why wouldn’t they with his bat?

There are maybe 2 or 3 catchers that are a force both offensively and defensively

        • robluca21

The passed balls do piss me off though…but man with his bat and throwing arm..if he could develop into a below average reciever he would be the best catcher in the game

You’re good with research numbers; what is the NYY record this year with GS catching and without GS catching? He’s a defensive liability and has been hitting .190 for over a year.

        • Kemajic

          Hits some HRs and .190.

        • robluca21

He is poor defensively but when you point to batting average as an arguing point you lose a lot of credibiity because it’s not 1982 anymore

You might want to check the Yankees’ team ERA with and without Sanchez behind the plate since he broke into the majors before you make such comments.

If Sanchez didn’t hit homers he wouldn’t be a pro. He is not a good catcher.

        • robluca21

You can say that about a lot of players.

        • puddles

“If he didn’t have his elite level skill, he wouldn’t be that good of a player” is a pretty weak argument tbh.

If steph curry couldnt hit 3’s he wouldn’t be a pro.

          Great arguement moron, lol.

        • johnrealtime

I’d say it was a pretty good argument in making the case that Gary Sanchez is a one dimensional player.

And Steph would still be a pro without the 3s, he just wouldn’t be an MVP

        • robluca21

I’m not a big Sanchez fan. But your argument is a bit silly.

Without his bat what would buster Posey be ? Maybe Jeff mathis? A good portion of catchers are only catchers because their stick plays up their shoddy defense

        • johnrealtime

“Without bat” is not the same thing as saying without the power tool. The five tools are hitting for average, hitting for power, throwing ability, fielding, and baserunning/speed. Gary Sanchez has one of these, power, so he is a one tool player. I.E. one dimensional (though upon further research I see he also has a strong throwing arm, so he actually has two tools).

Buster Posey during his prime had average, power, fielding, and even a little bit of speed/good baserunning for a catcher. I’m not really certain about his arm strength/throwing ability

        • robluca21

I love how you conveniently left out sancjez 70 rated arm

And I’m not convinced be lacks a bat tool because of one poor season average wise in 2018.

        • robluca21

Also a little bit of speed for a catcher does not quantity as having an overall plus tool

        • puddles

.190 BA over 375 PAs last year when he had a .197 BABIP vs. .285ish average over his first 750 PAs with a league average BABIP. But yep, let’s just assume he’s a .190 hitter now.

I mentioned the strong arm but maybe you read the post before I edited it about 30 seconds after posting?

      • robluca21

Not sure how much stock I take into catcher era

What is you have a guy like Greg Maddux or randy Johnson who loved personal catchers …obviously the backup in those teams will have an elite catchers era

Green this year has been quite the disappointment so far. The last two seasons he had the best spin rate on his 4 seamer but this year it seems to have flattened out a little. His breaking stuff was good enough when complemented with his elite fastball but it’s been far from elite so far this year and the results have shown

Thankfully khanle has regained his 2017 form as almost all of his velocity has returned and more importantly he is throwing strikes again. Cessa is becoming what Adam warren used to be for the team when he was here (a utility arm)

no matter how I pitch to Sanchez in The Show, that son of a gun always blasts it out. I could throw him a curveball in the dirt and next thing I know, Matty V is bellowing “Santa Maria!” I know he isn’t like that in real life, which makes things very frustrating.

Green needs to work on his fast ball he had a lot of movement on it last 2 years maybe if he can dominate these youngsters in the minors and get his ERA really low he will be back
