Blue Jays Release Ben Revere

By Steve Adams | May 22, 2019 at 8:28am CDT

The Blue Jays have released veteran outfielder Ben Revere from their Triple-A club, per Baseball America’s Kegan Lowe. He was in his second stint with the Jays after signing a minor league deal in late April. He’d previously had a brief but solid run as a regular in left field with Toronto after being acquired prior to trade deadline in 2015.

Revere initially reported to extended Spring Training upon signing, and he appeared in just eight games before returning to the open market. He collected multiple hits in four of those eight contests and hit .286/.286/.371 with only three strikeouts in his 35 plate appearances back in the Jays organization.

Revere, who turned 31 a couple of weeks ago, hasn’t played in the Majors since hitting .275/.308/.344 in 308 plate appearances with the Angels in 2017. He spent last season with the Halos’ Triple-A affiliate and batted .277/.319/.406 in a limited sample of 40 games. He’s long been known for his blistering speed and knack for putting the ball in play, although he’s swiped just three bags in those 48 games at the Triple-A level across the past two seasons. Revere is capable of handling all three outfield positions and was playing in games as recently as this past weekend, when he recorded consecutive multi-hit efforts, so he could land with another organization in need of some upper-level depth and step directly into a lineup in Triple-A.

He could step into the Tigers clubhouse today and start over Jacoby Jones.

You could probably start over Jacoby Jones. That lineup has 7 players battling the Mendoza line.

the scary thing is how bad a lot of those players are, and how far below the rest of them Jones’s production is. id take Davis at the plate over him.

He would absolutely be a slight improvement…not much, but Jones is a lost cause.

I’d rather have him with the Jays than some of these other guys! They didn’t even bring him up to the big club! Oh yes, there wasn’t room for him because the outfield of the Jays are playing and hitting so well!

We don’t need him in the big league. It’s a rebuild. Unless your a pitcher , there’s no room for the older ballers. In my opinion

A veteran has to hit good in the minors before you let him take big league AB’s from young guys with upside. Even AAA has a bit of a stockpile now so this was inevitable.

I watched the same guy play for the Phillies. He should legally change his name to Ban Ravara because he’s a quintessential 4A baseball player.

He’s a big league player. Its just that his skill set doesn’t have much value in today’s MLB.

He needs to learn how to walk before you can call him a big league player. Slap hitting, base stealing, no power players have to be solid table setters to stay in the show.

I’m not sure what games you were watching. He was mediocre at best. Bad routes to balls. Every hit on the ground. Pitchers knew not to walk him because he’d never hit it past an outfielder. His average was always his OBP. He was fast which was good on the bases. He had to hit 330 for that to matter. He rarely used that speed effectively in the OF. That said, he seemed to be a great guy and a great teammate.

Kind of a strange move. There’s not a whole lot more you could ask for from Revere in such a short time frame, and the Blue Jays have the worst outfield production in baseball this year by a mile.

I could definitely see Revere getting a chance in Detroit with Gardy managing or it wouldn’t actually shock me to see the Marlins or Giants go after him, either.

Revere is cheap, plays center field well even with his noodle arm, and had some acceptable years at the plate. When your teams are fielding -1.0 WAR outfielders, having a +1.0 WAR outfielder in center makes things a lot less embarrassing.

Hope the Detroit Tigers pick him up, but he might go to Boston with his brother Paul.

I guess they see more upside in Brito. Otherwise, justify the release of Revere by cutting Brito too. Brock Lundquist or Forrest Wall would happily replace Brito’s .111 avg and .333 OPS along with his awful arm and questionable route running on D.

He played for Twins before the Phillies – he was fast and well- twins just had a plethora of outfielders. He was missed not only for his playing but his personality.
