Angels Release Cody Allen

By Jeff Todd | June 18, 2019 at 1:38pm CDT

The Angels have released reliever Cody Allen, per a club announcement. He had recently been designated for assignment.

This move brings a formal end to Allen’s disappointingly brief tenure in Los Angeles. When he inked a one-year, $8.5MM contract with the organization over the winter, there were visions of a return to his glory days as the Indians’ closer. Instead, Allen is out the door before the trade deadline.

The 30-year-old’s downfall on the mound has been surprising, but the Halos’ decision to cut bait really isn’t. Allen was shellacked in his 23 frames with the organization, allowing nine home runs and issuing twenty walks to go with his 29 strikeouts. His swinging-strike rate has plummeted as his fastball has lost velocity; opposing hitters are having little trouble spitting on pitches out of the zone and squaring up those that aren’t.

While the Angels may not have seen a way to get Allen back on track, it stands to reason that some other organization will make an effort to do so. He’ll likely end up on a minor-league deal, perhaps getting a chance to spend some time at extended spring training to sort things out. If Allen does return to the majors this year, he’ll assuredly do so at a league-minimum salary, with the Halos paying the balance of the money he’s guaranteed.

Yes, the Mets are doing a fantastic job on their pen! They have a set up man who can’t get anyone out, making 10 million this year. And two more years too! The way to be successful is to do the opposite of whatever the Mets do!

Very funny. He’d sign for league minimum and it would be a redemption project for both him and Mickey. Mickey was able to get the best out of him as his pitching coach in Cleveland. Mickey’s on his last legs in Flushing. Joe Girardi has eyes on the job. This may be Mickey’s last chance to prove what he can get out of his pitchers.

I like the idea of the Yankees picking him up. Perhaps someone in that loaded bullpen could help him figure things out. Maybe a couple of months of mopup duty will help. Relievers are so fickle but he was one of the best and just fell off a cliff. He is still relatively young and I hope he turns it around.

The problem with that is he would never play in big situations, and he can’t pitch multiple innings of mop up/blowout work

Angels “stretched the budget” to get him while falling just shy of landing Corbin, Robertson, Eovaldi, and well short of Grandal.

Would’ve been better to stretch the budget for actual talent.

And until Allen can consistently get strikes on a breaking ball, hitters will continue to look for and feast on his sub par fastball. He’s a one pitch pitcher right now, and that pitch isn’t exactly great.

Thank goodness the Angels didn’t land Corbin, Robertson or Eovaldi. How long would they have that dead weight on the books?

As for Grandal, I’m glad the Angels didn’t add a Known PED user.

I get that, However I don’t want to root for a thief, and that’s what PED users are.

That was seven years ago and I certainly understand why seven years of being clean (hopefully) is penance enough.

But he stole wins that will never come back. What if those games he stole cost the Dodgers (I don’t like the Dodgers) the wild card. What he stole that can’t be replaced.

Corbin’s 1.9 WAR this year would easily make him the Ace of the staff. I never wanted Eovaldi, either.

Grandal’s numbers have stabilized since his PED bust. He’s not what he was his rookie year, but he’s vastly better than anyone on the Angels roster or farm.

Eovaldi has plenty of time to turn things around. He’s just hurt it’s not like he’s stopped throwing 100MPH or can’t find the plate or something. It’s a 4 year deal and he isn’t even 30 yet.

The Red Sox should make Eovaldi their closer. The dude throws 100 mph and is a 2 pitch guy…100 mph fastball and dirty slider. That’s all you need!

Yes they should. And if he’s a closer, they drastically overpaid, but as a closer, he wont have to go through a lineup on two pitches.

The Red Sox definitely overpaid him. His second half last year reminded me of when the Yankees picked up Brandon McCarthy a couple of years ago. His entire career was filled with injuries and mediocre pitching. The Yankees picked him up and he became an ace all of a sudden. When the year ended they passed on resigning him and quite a few fans were pretty upset about it. When he joined the Dodgers the next year he turned back into a pumpkin. Red Sox fans got to see Eovaldi quite often when he was a Yankee and they let a half season of a contract year change their opinion of him. He will never be more than an oft injured 3/4 pitcher. Who knows though. A move to the bullpen might keep the injuries away and he could become the next Chapman with his arsenal.

It is early for Corbin, but if he was a free agent next year, would you want him for even 80% of what he’s getting paid now over the next 6 years?

I’d rather throw away the 8 million on Allen.

chances are robertson’s injury will not linger in the long run. otherwise, there is no bad preformance to determine that he won’t be worth the money. also the phillies have money to kill. in my mind, that was the “stupid money” right there. regardless though, it would be a non-issue if he has to be cut any any point during the contract.

I wanted Robertson, but he has a grade 1 flexor strain in his pitching elbow. This year is gone and the Phillies are at risk of paying him 13 million in 2019.

That’s a huge gamble. Allen cost the Angels 8.5 million. Robertson has a great chance of costing the Phillies 23 million.

And I don’t think either team threw away money. They just took gambles and lost. I think they were good gambles, but it doesn’t always work out.

I didn’t think Corbin or Evovaldi were good gambles.

I agree on Robertson. He has always been a solid late inning reliever while always avoiding the IL. He always put the team first and was a low risk gamble in my opinion. I was sad to see him go and was surprised when the Yankees signed Ottavino for pretty much the same money.

Give me better ones. Please don’t say Morton. He wanted to pitch in Florida. Why? I will never know.

More often than not you are going to strikeout on the Free Agent market and if you are going to strikeout, let it be for one year.

I will always like reasonable one year gambles.

The Angels threw money away on the three pitchers. But you can include LaStella, ( a salary dump by the Cubs) Lucroy, Smith, Robles, Bour, Goodwin, Ramirez, Robles,

The Angels have 13 Free Agents on their roster, six waiver pickups

You’re going to hit, your going to miss.

If you are going to miss, miss on one year free agents.

Using win/loss especially in the minor leagues is such a terrible statistic to go by. Do you also use batting average to judge all hitters? If you’re going by win/loss then by your logic Mike Trout is just a mediocre player because his team is sitting 1 game below .500.

Multiple sites have the Halos listed from 12-15, And the ones like BleacherReport that have the Angels at 22–have the Indians at 25. Now that’s awkward.

I don’t think you know what “in shambles” really means. Let me give you an example:

Corey Kluber to the 60-day DL left Indians fans in shambles.

And they are not going to take the time for him to right the ship. These fans on the east coast kill me. I honestly see him going back to the Tribe and pitch in AAA or somewhere near home in Florida. Glad to see the Angels not afraid to be decisive.

While I think it’s likely that he signs with another team right away, I really think I’d be in Allen’s best interest if he took the rest of 2019 season off to figure out where his mid nineties heater went and how he can get it back, because without it he might have call it quits soon.

I like Epplers style of 1 year contracts that you can cut bait and move on. This is a perfect example. Unfortunately you have to overpay to get those one year deals (cough-Harvey-cough) but the added flexibility is def worth it.

Man, some Angels fans are really sensitive to criticism. Baseball snowflakes.

Criticism is fine, I just like honest and accurate takes. I haven’t found out that you supply that.

White Sox wouldn’t be an unlikely option. They usually sign a veteran pitcher or 2 to put in AAA to keep from forces the young guys up.
