Gio Gonzalez Suffers Setback

By Connor Byrne | June 27, 2019 at 7:36am CDT

Brewers left-hander Gio Gonzalez went on the 10-day IL on June 1 with a dead arm, an injury that’s going to cost him at least a month and a half of action. Gonzalez felt soreness during a recent bullpen session and won’t return until after the All-Star break as a result, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Gonzalez’s issue isn’t serious enough to warrant a complete shutdown, per McCalvy, but it’s still not what the Brewers need when they’re fighting for a playoff spot. Milawaukee had expected to get Gonzalez back for a start prior to the break. Instead, it’ll have to continue turning elsewhere.

The 33-year-old Gonzalez joined the Brewers on a $2MM guarantee April 27 to cap off an unusual several months. Even though Gonzalez owns a quality MLB track record, there was little interest in him during free agency. Consequently, the former Athletic and National sat out until late March, when he settled for a minor league pact with the Yankees. He opted out of his Yankees contract after a month and three Triple-A starts in order to sign with the Brewers.

Gonzalez’s long stay on the open market prevented him from participating in a normal spring training, which may help explain the longtime workhorse’s current injury troubles. To his credit, though, Gonzalez did turn in a 3.19 ERA/3.22 FIP with 7.55 K/9, 2.61 BB/9 and a 45.1 percent groundball rate in his first six starts and 31 innings as a Brewer before going on the IL. On a per-inning basis, Gonzalez has been one of the most effective arms in a shaky Milwaukee rotation. Despite their lack of dependable starters, the Brewers are in possession of a wild-card spot at 42-38 and just a game behind the NL Central-leading Cubs.

Maybe it’s a residual effect from the Yankees contract.

Oddly enough, there are some Yankees fans still upset that Cashman let Gio go.

Considering Gio is pitching 3.22 ERA, I’d be upset too that Cashman let him go when he was so cheap to have. Could’ve easily traded him at trade deadline should they wanted a superior SP.

Well, don’t think you know because NOBODY was going to “trade” for a pitcher that the Yankees new they were going to have to release due to roster space!. And, now that he’s hd this “tired arm” while making $2 million for sitting, exactly how stupid to the Yankees look for letting him go?
All the pundits on this site that howled when the Yankees let him go then got short on starting pitching should take notice but of course, they hide behind their new posts!

They would be cursing his name for signing Gonzalez and probably name drop Corbin

I found the comment humorous, scarfish. I didn’t read it as a dig against the Yankees but as joke acknowledging their injury troubles. Theirs an old saying along the the lines of “f’em if they can’t take a joke”. Keep up the good work.

Good thing they have one of the better rotations in baseball, they’ll be fine.

Royals and Brewers have made several trades over the years. Homer Bailey could be a #5 for Brew Crew. Check out his last several starts. He is not the same guy who was lit up in the central in recent years.

With the exception of the Twins, he hasn’t exactly gone up against solid teams.

That’s a more than reasonable suggestion. Homer’s got “2nd and 3rd time thru the lineup” issues, but he’s proven capable in small spurts.

He’s out of guaranteed money after this year, and he’ll starve as a FA starter. But as a “bulk” middle inning reliever (the kind the Brewers like)? He can re-invent himself. and make some money. Especially in a playoff-type atmosphere, which Milwaukee provides, and KC obviously doesn’t.

Yankees need someone better than gio… his low era is a result of pitching against bad teams (minus twins ) and the weaker hitting national league

Dead armed pitcher making $2 million just for sitting….think the Brewers are saying thank the lord we have Gio? NOT!

He’s a nice change of pace from the young guns (Burnes, Peralta, etc) who go 4 innings with 10 strikeouts and 5 earned runs every game
