Mariners Sign Kelby Tomlinson, Jaycob Brugman

By Connor Byrne | June 1, 2019 at 12:38am CDT

The Mariners have signed infielder Kelby Tomlinson and outfielder Jaycob Brugman to minor league contracts, per Roster Roundup.

The 28-year-old Tomlinson is best known for a long run with San Francisco, which selected him in the 12th round of the 2011 draft. Tomlinson stayed with the organization through last season, the fourth straight year in which he logged major league action. The righty-hitting Tomlinson was an offensive bright spot as a part-time player with the Giants from 2015-16, but his numbers cratered thereafter. Tomlinson ended his Giants tenure with a .265/.331/.332 line (84 wRC+), three home runs and 19 steals over 687 plate appearances.

San Francisco outrighted Tomlinson after last season, leading to a minor league opportunity with the division-rival Diamondbacks. However, Tomlinson opened 2019 by hitting an unappealing .218/.320/.276 with no HRs across 100 PA with Arizona’s Triple-A club. As a result, the D-backs released him May 12.

Brugman, 27, has spent most of the season on the minor league injured list with the Orioles, who released him last week after he came off the IL. He had been with the O’s since they acquired him from the Athletics for right-hander Jake Bray in November 2017 . Brugman’s only major league experience came in ’17 as a member of the A’s, with whom the left-hander hit a respectable .266/.346/.343 (90 wRC+) and totaled three home runs in 162 attempts. Otherwise, Brugman has mostly played at Triple-A over the past few seasons. He carries a .276/.342/.403 slash with 14 homers in 856 PA at the minors’ top level.

I think it’s funny. How they pick up these guys , especially when they had Ackley this past spring and then released him. These guys wouldn’t make a pimple on Ackley’s but. These guys don’t even hit in the Minor’s.lol

Ackley asked for his release as he wasn’t going to make the ML roster

Happy to see Tomlinson getting a shot somewhere. Guy has a short swing with no power but he gets on base and doesn’t strikeout a lot. He also seemed to hit well in clutch situations.
I feel like he was a victim of SF wanting more power. If they had this I think Tomlinson would still be around. His numbers for a part time player were really good.

I agree. He’s a gamer for sure, can play multiple positions and slaps the ball around fine. He’s never going to be an all-star but is a servicebale backup player.

He always seemed so easy to root for. One of those players that in hindsight wasn’t very good but you were always happy when he was in the game.

Hell Yes I miss watching him play, big big mistake getting ride of him. If our G’s hitting coaches were all that he could have been great. What the hell is Berry doing anyway? Why dosen’t he help out with the hitting more?
Or trade him to Oakland and let Rickey teach him how to steal, I am sure he has to be getting bored hanging around the Office anyway. If I was still living in the Bay area I would have asked Rickey if he would be willing to meet with Tomlinson and if he liked the kid to spends some time with him. Tomlinson would be a wonderful full time lead off hitter and base stealer with his speed and he never makes mental errors at all. Yes I am a big Rickey and a big Tommy Fan.

Who cares about running anyways. They need HR’s and Bat.avg. Plus versatility. Show me 1 player that plays all OF pos. 1B and 2B. And is a career .991 in this 5 positions.. not even B, Zobrist. I still think it’s funny. The M’s management. They still don’t do anything right. Lol.

Tomlinson plays the game the right way, 110% always. A versatile backup middle infielder. The Giants could use him now.

I was looking for a place to get more information on players for the Beat the Streak game. And I thought I would check on Tomlinson. I just Couldn’t believe that he was out of baseball. I had this horrible picture of him down at the church filling sandbags or something like that, so I googled him and found out to my Great Pleasure that my boy was back. on track. I bet he makes it this time.

Oh my are you on drugs. .218 in tripA with a .276 slugging. Really. Your gonna compare that to Ackley. Who had a career trip A minor league avg of .303. With power really. And 2nd place Gold Glove at 2nd and LF. In the Am.League
