Red Sox Release Carson Smith

By Jeff Todd | June 19, 2019 at 11:40am CDT

The Red Sox have released reliever Carson Smith, according to Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com (Twitter link). Smith had been working through a rehab program after re-signing with the organization on a minors deal.

Smith owns a shiny 2.21 career ERA over 102 MLB innings, but he hasn’t thrown even 25 of those frames since the start of the 2016 season. Elbow and shoulder woes put a halt to his promising career; he was outrighted off of the Boston 40-man at the end of the ’18 campaign.

When the Sox brought back Smith, the hope was that he’d be able to get back on track on the mound after building up to full health. Given that he has not yet been activated for competitive duties, it seems the first step is not yet completed.

really sucks for the guy. he’s certianly talented, just cant stay on the feild. is say he’s worth signing to a minors deal for just about any team, but if BOS didnt think so, i dont see why anyone should at this point.

As much as I admire the work of DD over the years, his scouting team is unreliable when it comes to Relief Pitchers. A BoSox castoff today; an all star tomorrow.

DD traded away Wade Smiley for Carson Smith back when Smith was on the Mariners.

Excellent pickup for the mets. The yankees will be stacks with only HR hitters yet the mets will have elite arms from starters to the closers

mets2020 Are you really bragging about a WS that you lost 4-1 again? I don’t think Dodgers fans are proud of losing 2 WS in a row.

NYY fans should remember 2004, the biggest choke in sport history.

mets2020 Maybe for the Mets losing the WS is worth celebrating, but for successful teams it isn’t.

The Yankees have more WS titles than the Mets have winning seasons. So nice try.

In the last decade (10 years) NYY are 1-0 in the WS and Mets are 0-1.. The last decade of WS includes 2009 – 2018 as you can’t count the current season.

This could be a good pickup for the O’s. If healthy he could be a reliable bullpen pitcher and if he returns to previous form he could provide them a solid trade piece.

How patient should they be for an oft-injured 30 year old reliever?

One who doesn’t take a 40 man slot and costs minimal dollars? Very patient. Do you see the junk we throw out there on a nightly basis? Straily is a guaranteed HR every time he takes the mound. We call up Phillips or Kline and they both get rocked. Castro has been a disaster more often than not. Even the two guys who should be dependable, Bleier and Givens are anything but that. So, sure I’ll roll the dice.

I mean why not. Seems like every team is having bullpen issues these days. If someone has had previous success in the past regardless of injury history, sign them and see what happens

Got to love delusional Mets fans their team is in third place all the ports they will be sellers at the deadline but act like they are the best team in baseball. We all know what their team name stands for my entire team sucks.

Will never understand why fans of a team 33-36 and third place in their division is trying to crack jokes about a team 45-27 and first place in their division. Put down the crack pipe.
