Red Sox Place Hector Velazquez On 10-Day IL

By Jeff Todd | June 19, 2019 at 1:41pm CDT

The Red Sox announced that they have placed right-hander Hector Velazquez on the 10-day injured list. He’s dealing with a back strain after throwing four innings of relief last night’s marathon contest.

Righty Josh Smith is coming up to take the open roster spot. That’ll provide the Boston org with a fresh relief arm after burning through some pen pieces.

Velazquez had just been activated from a prior IL stint that cost him nearly three weeks of action. He currently carries a 5.59 ERA through 38 2/3 innings on the season.

it feels like the IL spot is manipulated.

It very well may be manipulated but Velazquez clearly had an issue last night with his back in the 16th inning. He came out for the 17th but his back was clearly hurting him and he could not go on.

Josh Smith again? Has he shown anything? Give another an opportunity.

It probably is. Velasquez isn’t arb-eligible until 2021, so he’d likely co-operate. After all, who says no to a 10 day vacation when there’s no real financial consequences?

You can play around with guys who have either (a) low service times or (b) guaranteed money coming. Tell a Free Agent to-be that you want him to “phantom” an injury, and I doubt he’d agree. Everybody else; why not? It’s a long season.

And ya, the league checks these things. But I don’t think they check them closely. The team wants it, the player doesn’t mind; who’s offended?

He was in Pain, clutching his back when he left game. But, hey don’t let the facts get in the way of your assumptions. After all it is Boston, they must be cheating.

I think he was clearly not right, n not talking just bout pitching, he was beyond spent. I don’t get it about Price, unless they were saving him from injury due to future plans.

Price is going along with JBJ to the Angels for Trout.

(P.S. totally kidding but it would be fun to watch yankee fans poop the bed over a trade like that)

Sox can add both Velazquez and Smith to make it happen. If need be a couple of Fenway Franks too.
