White Sox Claim Jimmy Cordero

By Jeff Todd | June 7, 2019 at 1:49pm CDT

The White Sox have claimed righty Jimmy Cordero off waivers from the Mariners, per club announcements. Southpaw Carlos Rodon was shifted to the 60-day IL to create 40-man space.

Cordero has now moved three times already this season. He started out with the Nationals, who had employed him for a few years after claiming him from the Phillies a few years back, before brief stints with the Blue Jays and M’s.

Though he didn’t manage to take advantage of a 22-appearance MLB showcase last year in D.C., Cordero has obviously shown enough to pique the interest of multiple organizations. He carries a 5.40 ERA in 16 2/3 Triple-A innings this season, with twenty strikeouts but also 13 walks.

This move definitely makes up for the 10 years of patiently waiting for quality Sox baseball.

More scraps from other teams. Could have gone big but not Reinsdorf

This should put them over the top. What a shrewd pick up. Who saw this coming – lol!!!!
I guess Uncle Jerry didn’t want to get the payroll too close to the upper limit penalty.
Reinsdorf spends more on consession hot dogs then he does on players.

Why in the world do you waste so much time and energy disliking a team?

Since this is another meaningless minor league transaction that I have no idea why MLBTR would bother wasting their time and website space with, I’m going do a post I would’ve done for the Vaughn pick (there were already 50 posts on that article, many that were silly troll posts).

This is what the Sox could look like in 2021 if the main guys pan out (I’m not even going to attempt a batting lineup):

    C Collins
    1B Vaughn
    2B Madrigal
    SS Anderson
    3B Moncada
    LF Jimenez
    CF Robert
RF ??? (possibly Basabe or Aldofo, or an outside acquisition)
DH Abreu (if they decide to keep him)

    BENCH
C maybe Zavala or McCann (or FA)
    IF Sanchez/Rondon/Mendick (pick one)
OF/DH maybe Palka/Engel/Delmonico/Cordell/Leury Garcia/Jake Burger/any other prospect not listed (pick one or possibly two)

I’m not Nostradamus, so I have no idea who the Sox will get either as a FA or via trade, this is going by what the Sox currently in the system. It’s pretty tough to figure out the bench…it’s basically who emerges from each group (if any do in a particular group).

ROTATION (more difficult than the starting offense):

    Kopech
    Cease
Giolito (if he actually has figured it out)
Lopez (if he can bounce back from his ugly season)
Rodon (he will be gone after ’21 when he becomes a FA)
    Dunning
??? a veteran via trade or FA
??? a prospect not listed that emerges over the next year or so

Pick your 5 from that group

I’m not even going to attempt the bullpen, I’ll just list a few guys who might be, but there’s no guarantees: Hamilton, Burdi, Fry, Ruiz, Vieira, Burr, Frare, Bummer, Tyler Johnson, Alec Hansen.

So much can and will happen before April ’21, but the future holds promise, as long as the key guys pan out.

The White Sox cared enough to claim him and use a 40-man roster spot.

And you probably shouldn’t. May just be they thought he was the best thing available to plug the roster spot with and they’ll see if he clears waivers if/when they outright him. Plenty of guys have gone through the 40-man carousel and then fallen off the map thereafter. But some guys like this end up catching fire.

        @dewssox79

        Silly comment, but I’ll bite.

I only used 2021 because of the several prospect injuries (pushing back their developmental time) and Vaughn just getting drafted.

But, I’ll just boot Vaughn and Dunning from the list and label it the 2020 list. There, problem solved.

I love how people freak out over every meaningless midseason adjustment to the 40-man roster. Every team does this.
