Mariners Designate Mac Williamson For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 16, 2019 at 2:12pm CDT

The Mariners announced Tuesday that outfielder Mac Williamson has been designated for assignment. His roster spot will go to utilityman Kristopher Negron, whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Tacoma. Seattle also recalled right-hander Erik Swanson from Tacoma to fill a vacant spot on its active roster.

Williamson, 28, was once viewed as a potential long-term option with the Giants but has yet to replicate his solid Triple-A production at the MLB level. Seattle gave him a slightly longer look than San Francisco did in 2019, but his results with both clubs were poor. In a combined 144 trips to the plate this year, Williamson has slashed an underwhelming .156/.250/.258 while striking out at a 30.6 percent pace. He does have some pop in his bat, evidenced by a lifetime .266/.344/.488 line in parts of five Triple-A seasons.

Williamson is out of minor league options, so any club that acquires him would have to carry him on its MLB roster. The Mariners will have a week to trade him, release him or attempt to pass him through outright waivers. If they go the latter route and he clears, Williamson could still elect free agency due to the fact that he’s already been outrighted off a 40-man roster once in his career.

You forgot the Giants. They’re always open for DFA’d outfielders!

You realize they were the first to DFA him, right?

If I missed the joke, feel free to laugh at me.

To be fair Alex Dickerson has transformed into a stud in his short time in SF. Easily their best outfielder rn.

Well my team has won 149×0. So how do you like that Mr touchy. (I don’t mean that in the gross way just that he seems very sensitive.) Lighten up all it is a game we watch for fun. Did you get shouting mad when Darth Vader cut off Luke’s hand? Not much difference unless you root for the dark side. We won in the end anyway. Dang it used we again and this was for a movie.

You guys all have to remember any OF call ups are short term. Haniger should be back soon hopefully. Jerry is going to have some toys to play with. What will the 3 starters and 1 off the bench guy be for Seattle in 2 years? Some real interesting pieces in the minors. I know some can stumble but let’s be positive and they all are good.

Classic AAAA player. Still good enough to thrive overseas. Wish him well!

Negron is almost as AAAA as Williamson

Weird that Seattle went with the guy who’s more of an infielder when they had two legitimate outfielders overdue for a promotion.

But Negron was hitting well, and it’s not like Jerry’s done making moves.

Miller and Fraley? I’d lean Miller before Fraley just because the dude deserves at least a short look at this point, but Fraley is obviously the more thrilling OF of the two, though.

Miller and Andreoli. Fraley just got to AAA. I’m guessing that he’s more likely to be a September call-up.

I’ve been tracking Jake Fraley’s path through the Seattle system- I decided to go to a Rainiers game last Thursday where he went 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts, 2 looking! Twice he came up with the bases loaded. This was also Andrew Moore’s final game in the Ms organization where he gave up 10 R’s in the first 2 innings. Just my luck!! Haha

Yikes! Just read Andrew Moore was outrighted back to Tacoma after being DFA’d. He looked terrible in his last outing vs Reno. Don’t we have enough soft tossing SP’s in the .org?

I was really hoping he would do well for the Mariners and prove SF wrong but it is not to be. Agree he might end up in the KBP or Japan but was honestly hoping he’d figure out MLB.

I do wonder if the change to AL makes much of a difference given that the bulk of at bats are against pitchers you may not have seen before and if it takes time to adjust? Anyone have a perspective on that?

……At least they waited til the Day after his Birthday! Mac’s 29 ,he should go overseas and learn how to shorten that swing to make Contact more often for a Year or so and give it another go sometimes tall hitters mature later? With this juiced Ball and Ban Box Dimensions MLB has now,he shouldn’t give up yet!

They actually had him shorten him swing before last season. Unfortunately, very tall hitters and shorter ones don’t tend to age well, generally speaking.

He did have his chances. Looks like it’s time for jap ball and if that don’t work out, come back to the States, and team up with Ishikiwa and coach in the minors together :/

A lot racist. Might have been to just shorten and an oversight but might not want to use that again.

He was actually finally coming into his own, just a few years ago until he stumbled over the BP mound and crashed hard with season ending concussion problems, about 1 1/2 yrs ago. He was then on his best hitting hot streak ever, at that time. Since that stumbling wall crash, for whatever reason he has never been the same lsince.
