Phillies Sign Logan Morrison

By Connor Byrne | July 13, 2019 at 5:03pm CDT

The Phillies have signed free-agent first baseman Logan Morrison to a minor league contract, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Morrison became available when he opted out of a minors pact with the Yankees on July 2.

The 32-year-old Morrison is only two seasons removed from serving as one of the majors’ finest offensive producers. He slashed .246/.353/.516 (130 wRC+) with 38 home runs in 601 plate appearances with the Rays that year to earn a $6.5MM guarantee with the Twins entering 2018. Morrison wasn’t nearly as good last year, though, owing in part to a labrum tear that ended his season in August. He then went without a contract until signing a minors pact with the Yankees toward the end of April.

Morrison never reached the majors with the Yankees, instead hitting an excellent .289/.341/.658 (143 wRC+) with 15 HRs in 164 PA with their Triple-A affiliate. With Rhys Hoskins holding down first in Philadelphia, it’ll also be difficult for Morrison to find much playing time with his new team.

He should be getting a look in the Majors sooner rather than later. I realize he had an abysmal season last year but he’s put up very solid numbers in AAA this season so it’s kind of at the point where a team is either going to give him a shot in the Majors or he isn’t going to get one. He’s not going to do much more than .275 with 15 HRs (his AAA numbers) so I’d expect the Phillies to call him up in short order – otherwise why sign him at all?

.190 is better than most of the Phillies bench.

The only player on the active roster batting that low is Roman Quinn.

Hoskins is overrated. He gives great at bats and walks a ton, but he’s not the hitter he was his rookie year.

Rice Hoskons came out of nowhere before anybody ever heard of him. Now that people know who he is and thats Reese Hoskins, the league figured him out. Just because he hit a bunch of homers early on in his career during unmeaningful April games doesn’t make him any good anyways. He is 2019 verson of Kevin “melon” Mench.

Regardless if what Twins fans say, if LoMo were an everyday player he would hit way more than a buck 90. They only had him during his torn labrum season. I find it funny that the Yanks spent 12+ mill on EE when they were already loaded with low batting average defensively challenged power hitters. They could have just brought LoMo (or for that matter Frazier) up and spent the 12 or 13 mill on Keuchel to fill the starting pitching need they truly have. They also would have been able to keep the prospects they gave up to Seattle for EE. For a team that seems to have far too many low batting average high power DH type hitters but desperately needs starting pitching, is EE really worth more than LoMo + Keuchel + prospects + sending Frazier to the minors? Before you say that the Yanks have plenty of middle tier starters and need an ace look at Keuchel’s recent stats. He isn’t a strikeout king and lets batters reach base but that is always the case with ground ball pitchers. He regularly takes shutouts into the 8th inning. The Yanks knew this and that is why they finished 2nd in the Keuchel race. I just don’t understand why they didn’t go the extra mile if they were gonna burn the cash (and prospects) on a redundant EE anyway.

Yankees are spending about 5mil on EE this year and will have a 5mil buyout. They also only sent one prospect who is a 19 year old in Low A ball. EE has a far higher pedigree than LoMo. Keuchel has only thrown 32 innings with peripherals that are less than encouraging.

The Yanks pay EE $7+ mill this year. That combined with the minimum $5+ mill next year make at least $12 mill. If the Yanks make the playoffs this season (which they will) they will have to pay EE a $20+ mill prorated per game salary for every game the team plays in the postseason. That brings his minimum cost hundreds of thousands above $12 mill. They could’ve had Keuchel for about $13 mill and they needed him way more than they needed a low batting average defensively challenged DH power hitter. The Yanks needed a player like EE less than any team in baseball. They have several players like him on the MLB roster already and LoMo and Frazier in the minors. Keuchel always outperforms his peripherals. He is a ground ball pitcher (arguably the best ground ball pitcher of about the last half decade) so that is by design. He relies on contact and double plays. His goal isn’t to strike out 1 batter on 3 pitches. His goal is to get out 2 batters on 2 pitches. He may not be at his peak but he is still a great pitcher. He has earned an AL Cy Young pitching this way. He may allow base runners but he rarely walks anybody and pitches deep into games with very few pitches. The Yanks knew that. The Braves were the only team that prevented the Yanks from acquiring Keuchel. The day before Keuchel signed the Yanks were the front runners. You can talk about his peripherals or about how he isn’t a true ace so the Yanks don’t need him all you want but the fact of the matter is the Yankee organization disagreed with you. They went after Keuchel. Hard. Harder than at least 28 other MLB teams. If you ran a team that was loaded with low batting average poor defensive DH type hitters and needed proven starting pitching, would you rather have Keuchel, LoMo and a prospect or release LoMo, send Frazier to the minors, give away the prospect, and pick up an extremely redundant low average no defense slugger all while not helping your pitching, hurting your cap space and ability to acquire some other good highly paid pitchers this season and taking a $5 mill cap hit next season as well? The move wasn’t a stupid move in and of itself. It just made no sense for the Yanks in particular. The only thing I can figure is that the Yanks felt like they needed to burn some cash after missing out on Keuchel and hoped most of their fans were to unobservant or subserviently faithful enough to not realize how little that move made sense. Or maybe it was just that stupid no facial hair rule that the Yankees impose preventing them from signing the pitcher they went after so hard. We all know Keuchel is very partial to his beard (as many bearded men are). Why do the Yanks even have that rule anymore? It was created by George. I doubt Hal is as dedicated to it as his dad was. Maybe they will realize how useless that rule is and abandon it soon. These players make dozens of millions of dollars a year now and hundreds of millions over their careers. Not only that but there are plenty of other places to go to make that kind of money and win a championship without the owner trying to tell you how to shave your face. If you are Keuchel, or Kimbrel, or any other productive player that wants to have facial hair, why would you ever sign with the Yanks?

Longest paragraph ever. By the way your take on the beard is both uninformed, and very self serving. I’m pretty sure Hal and the gang know the real goings on, but keep telling yourself you know best.

How it self serving? I don’t have a beard or particularly even care about them. In fact… How is it uninformed? When the Yanks persued Keuchel I read article after article questioning whether he would ever actually sign there because of his beard. I can post links if you don’t believe me. I would say that is the definition of informed.

Besides the Phillies offense is as bad if not worse than their pitching. It’s not like they just need one thing.

Doubt LoMo is gonna see Philly this summer unless we get more injuries. Not a bad low cost signing, but LoMo is pretty much limited to playing 1B. I guess you could put him in LF for a game or two and he probably wouldn’t embarrass himself. Only other explanation for signing LoMo is maybe Jay Bruce is hurt more than the Phillies are saying. Bruce missed a lot of time last year with foot and hip issues. Supposedly has a sore Achilles right now.

Moot point. Last night’s loss was a killer. One out away from a much needed W and Neris coughs it up. Heck, by the time the Dodgers leave town next Thursday, we could be a sub-.500 team and double-digits behind Atlanta. Reality sucks!

Morrison played the outfield for most of his early career, but theres no way he can play LF especially if he’s out of citizens bank park. Watched a railriders game last month and he looks absolutely jacked though
