Nationals Place Max Scherzer On Injured List

By Connor Byrne | July 13, 2019 at 5:09pm CDT

The Nationals have placed ace Max Scherzer on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 10) with a mid-back strain. They recalled catcher Spencer Kieboom from Double-A Harrisburg to take Scherzer’s 25-man spot.

Scherzer last pitched a week ago, when he turned in a seven-inning, four-hit performance with 11 strikeouts against no walks in a win over the Royals. It was another in a long line of gems for Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young winner who may be on his way to his fourth such award this season. The 34-year-old has logged a magnificent 2.30 ERA/2.00 FIP with a jaw-dropping 12.6 K/9 against 1.6 BB/9 across 129 1/3 innings so far in 2019. He’s likely the MVP of a Nationals team that has climbed out of the basement over the past several weeks to grab a 1 1/2-game hold over the NL’s top wild-card spot.

Considering Washington’s place in the standings, it obviously can’t afford to go without Scherzer for longer than a minimum IL stint. Scherzer said Friday his injury isn’t a “long-term” one, per Todd Dybas of NBC Sports Washington. As of now, though, the Hall of Fame-caliber workhorse is in line for a rare stay on the shelf. He’ll be out until at least July 20.

This is bad for the Nats. A back injury is the worst you could have aside from your arm.

Not only disgusting but also sad to have so little faith in your team.

Who exactly do you all expect to see in the playoffs? A bunch of Andrew Cashners? No you’re going to see good pitching.

Better to be exposed to it now than get smacked in the face in October. You don’t get better avoiding the Scherzers of the league.

Its retro to the 10th. He’ll miss 1 start and participation in the ASG. He’ll very likely be back just in time to 2 hit the Braves. Yeah, he’ll miss the Phillies series, but the Nats have already passed them and shut them out in the series opener in Philly. The Nats just need to rely on Corbin and Sanchez now to finish it. Max will miss the Baltimore series…. but then so likely will the Orioles.

Had Max not gone on the IL, he might have made a delayed start against the Orioles and missed the Atlanta series. Be careful what you wish for Braves fans. I know you were all thinking how the Marlins were dead in the water, the Mets were fading and the Nationals couldn’t get past their bullpen a month ago. All you had to worry about was… the Phillies……

Mad Max, Stras & Corbin plus Turner, Soto, Robles, Rendon
All along I thought they would go to the wire with the Braves before the Phillies would
I never in a million years woulda thought that the Nats bullpen woulda been that bad

May 20th? I think. The Nationals had the 2nd or 3rd most losses in the National League. The pitching coach was changed and they started to get healthy.

Now they have the 3rd best record in the NL and are playing like a team. Only the Dodgers should be feeling comfortable right now

He’s had 7 excellent years in a row… Very similar to Kershaw. But Kershaw has 4 more years where he was very good. Before Scherzer’s breakout year, he was mediocre. Scherzer is quite a bit older also. Almost 35 and Kershaw just turned 31. The end is near for Max. I just look at the 168 wins… I know wins don’t mean anything, but Morris was criticized because he only had 250 wins, but he finally made it. (3 rings helped) Scherzer would be right near the bottom for wins for a starting pitcher. His numbers are very close to Sandy Koufax who had a 6 year run of complete dominance… but he won 3 World Series and was series MVP twice.
I think Scherzer needs to either have a couple more years of being an ace or win a World Series or two.
        Right now, it’s border line.

Am I glad the Braves won’t see Scherzer, hell yeah. Would I prefer he missed a few more starts, yes. Am I glad he’s injured? Of course not. It’s a bad look fan reaction every time, that’s done without thinking of athletes as people, but it’s(IMO) not malicious, it’s reactionary fanaticism.
