Rays Acquire Eric Sogard

By George Miller | July 28, 2019 at 6:16pm CDT

6:16PM: The trade has been officially announced.  Toronto will indeed receive two players to be named later.

1:20PM: The Blue Jays have traded infielder Eric Sogard to the Tampa Bay Rays, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sogard was a late scratch from Sunday’s game, with Jon Morosi of MLB Network first reporting that a trade was “imminent.” The deal is pending a physical.

According to Scott Mitchell of TSN Sports, it appears that the Blue Jays will receive two players to be named later in the deal, though he notes that the deal has not yet been finalized and details have yet to be confirmed. The Rays will need to clear a spot for Sogard on the 40-man roster.

As one of just a few utility options on the trade market, the 33-year-old attracted the interest of a number of teams, having been linked to the Cubs and Giants, though in the end it was the Rays who made the most compelling proposal. With the Blue Jays playing out the finale of a series against the Rays, Sogard won’t have to travel far to join his new team. He’ll depart the Toronto dugout and travel to Boston with his new teammates.

With more than eight years of MLB experience under his belt, Sogard is not an unknown commodity. That said, no one—perhaps not even the Blue Jays—could have expected the veteran to transform himself into a coveted trade target. The club inked Sogard to a minor-league contract in December after his market didn’t develop in free agency. Now, though, president Mark Shapiro and company will turn that small investment into a prospect that better fits their timeline for contention.

Though the Rays certainly don’t have a glaring need on the infield, depth and versatility are imperative for contending clubs as the postseason approaches. A number of injuries have already thinned the Tampa infield, with Brandon Lowe, Daniel Robertson, Yandy Diaz, and Christian Arroyo all currently on the injured list. With Joey Wendle struggling to replicate last season’s success and still no timetable for Lowe’s return, per Marc Topkin, Sogard looks like a solid candidate to fill in at second base for the time being, with the potential to slide into a depth/utility role when Lowe gets healthy. While Sogard has spent the bulk of his career at second base, he has played sparingly at shortstop, third base, and in the outfield in 2019.

Sogard has enjoyed a career year at the dish, turning in career-best power numbers and displaying on-base skills that have made him a viable leadoff option for Toronto. In 73 games, He’s posted a .300/.363/.477 slash line to go with ten homers and six stolen bases. Prior to this year, Sogard had never hit more than three home runs in a single season. Defensively, his -5 DRS paint him as a below-average second baseman.

For the Blue Jays, it seems likely that Sogard’s departure will usher in a frenzied couple of days as they look to sell off Major-League pieces before the trade deadline. Marcus Stroman is perhaps the crown jewel of this trade season, and Ken Giles should receive attention from nearly every contending team. Daniel Hudson won’t draw as big a return as the aforementioned pair, but teams that can’t afford big-name relievers could pursue Hudson instead.

@mendoza—not exactly—I was at the first game—he played the outfield against the Cubs at Wrigley and was traded during the game. He played that night in Philly (I think) for the Expos. Two teams, two different cities—same day.

Doubt it means anything like that. Sogard, despite his season, is not very good, and probably cost the Rays next to nothing. He could just be depth without an 8/31 waiver deadline this year.

A bruised shin for Lowe and a deal for Eric Sogard tells you Lowe must be finished for the year? That’s some real speculative bullshi right there.

Yandy Diaz is also out and Sogard is a versatile bench piece.

The only angst with this front office is the timing. Losing out on what could’ve been with Donaldson and St. Louis, holding Smoak too long, Pillar, maybe could’ve traded Alford couple offseasons ago to improve the big club. The waiting hurt. We will never know. That Donaldson deal could have allowed a Stroman extension.

          I doubt it’s him anyway now. He wouldn’t be a PTBNL I don’t think.

I haven’t followed him much in the last couple years since his trade from LA. He was a pretty hyped prospect when they got him… but injuries I guess.

MLB has him listed as the Rays 27th best prospect. A bottom top
30 prospect isn’t an unreasonable ask for Sogard.

That’s quite the dip. They’ve really soured on him, but I suppose that makes some sense given his age now (27) I was expecting something slightly less than that. I was thinking closer to a Jake Faria but if it’s a PTBNL it’s probably a draft pick from last season in the lower minors.

A more versatile switch-hitting Leury Garcia would be a better fit for the Cubs than lefty hitting Eric Sogard if the Northsiders dare another trade with the cross-town White Sox. Garcia can play the outfield including CF as well as 2B, SS and 3B. Along with Albert Almora, Garcia would help keep Jason Heyward in RF where he belongs. Garcia could also help solve the Cubs leadoff woes and provide insurance for SS Javier Baez on their active roster with Addison Russell now in AAA Iowa.

Sogard probably not worth an organizational top 25 guy, anyone has that. Cubs have some guys anyway, Amaya, Brennan Davis, Roederer, Alzolay, Marquez, Hoerner. They don’t really have top tier guys but they certainly have some depth.

@aaron—-I’ve long tried to guess your profession. Are you a lawyer or a English professor at a university? You just wrote an entire paragraph about a guy who is “versatile” but does nothing well. Doesn’t hit for average, doesn’t get on base, has minimal power, poor zone ratings and below average runs saved metrics.

His lifetime on base pct is .294–that’s not even going to solve, or help, the Cubs leadoff situation. Even this season when he’s hitting .290 (the career outlier by a wide margin), his OBP is .326.

Just because he can stand many places on a field and can be “versitile”, it doesn’t make him valuable at all.

I respect most of your posts, but this is quite an oversell.

And now all of a sudden we got Aaron Sanchez throwing back to back gems (So far today). Lets see if Ass-kins is smart enough to finally deal him. This is as good as time as any. Unless he starts getting bombed or has another blister situation in the next half hour! So equally important that Toronto deals both Stroman and Sanchez by Wednesday.

Selling Sanchez now would be selling as low as possible and makes zero sense. Jays should keep him and hope he improves and then try to trade him in the offseason.

We don’t know that this is selling low. I’d rather get 50 cents on the dollar than nothing

I’d hold Sanchez for now. If he has two huge months either deal him in the offseason or hand an extension

That would sound great. Either the Jays would have a guy back on-track or it will be someone else’s problem. The latter would mean a better deal this offseason than a deal within the next 3 days.

Dumb trade. Dude cannot keep those numbers up, and the Rays need pitching. Duh.

How can you call this a dumb trade when we don’t even know who the return piece or pieces are?

They can still acquire a pitcher or two as well. The deadline is still 3 days away.

Why another versatile LH hitter infielder? We have Wendle , Lowe and others? We need a RH bat. I hope there is another trade coming, sadly maybe trading B Lowe?

Lowe’s not going anywhere. Choi yes….maybe Duffy too. Not Lowe. A 1st baseman who can hit for average and power?

That’s a glut of IF depth. Someone’s got to get traded for a bullpen arm.

For some reason I’m thinking Wong. Not sure why but he’s been left down in AAA while players are repeatedly promoted around him. He’s tearing it up.

Another “glut” of IFers….5 guys struggling to get above .200, and 1 who hits OK but is an adventure with every throw….it never ends…..

As for BLowe, the Rays notoriously lie about injuries all the time; I have no idea why.. 2 years ago, Matt Duffy was “day to day” for the entire year. Lowe, of course, was originally day to day…it’s only been a month…that’s a lot of days. I suspect he’s done for the year. Or at least until September.

As for Sogard, sure, why not. The PRBNL are probably dependent on how he does until the season wraps. It’s easy to like the guy, but comparing him to Ben Z. stretches things just a bit much…..

Good move for the Rays. Adames looks like he could use some rest and Sogard seems like a guy who will enjoy all the defensive substitutions Cash likes to make!
