Royals Designate Brian Flynn

By Jeff Todd | July 26, 2019 at 3:21pm CDT

The Royals announced today that they have designated southpaw Brian Flynn for assignment. His roster spot was needed for a variety of other pitching moves.

Also departing the active roster is righty Jake Newberry, who was optioned. The Kansas City org has activated starter Jakob Junis and recalled southpaw Richard Lovelady.

Flynn, 29, has appeared at the major-league level with the Royals in each of the past four seasons. He was a multi-inning mainstay in the pen last year but has scuffled in 2019. Through 29 1/3 innings over ten relief appearances and one start, Flynn carries a 5.22 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9.

Newberry was going back down when Junis reactivated. What is latest on trades? Diekman move does not appear imminent, or guy Royals are getting will need to be on active roster. If return was a minor-leaguer, Lovelady would just take Diekman’s place.

Newberry optioned for Junis and Lovelady takes Diekmans place. Brian Flynn is DFA’d to make room on the 40 man for a return piece for Diekman?

If Diekman was moved, we wouldn’t need to clear a 40 man spot. I just don’t think they’re in any real hurry to fill the 40 man spot.

I doubt very much we will get a major league piece for Diekman.

We don’t know that Newberry has packed his bags, could just be a procedural move and he’ll come right “back” once the Diekman trade is consummated. Could also see Kyle Zimmer, Eric Skoglund or Heath Fillmyer taking Diekman’s place.

Rumor is that the Dodgers are in real talks with the Royals about trading for Diekman. Also the Braves, Phillies, and Nationals are also very interested. So, as the Royals, no need to rush it. Take some time and get the best trade possible!!

New Berry was optioned for Junis and Flynn was DFA to make room for Lovelady. Lovelady isn’t taking Diekmans spot, because he hasn’t been traded yet!

Don’t worry Royals’ fans. Lucas Duda is untouchable.

LOL. He hit a pinch-hit HR the other day which means he’s “clutch” and ought to buy him the rest of the year on the active roster. I try not to care because it’s not like he’s the reason we suck and he’s not really blocking anyone who needs to be playing so whatever.

I guess it shows the Royals’ have seen enough of Flynn. Duda may not be blocking anyone, but the Royals did basically choose him over Brian Goodwin whom they traded a decent prospect to acquire. I’m sure there are reasons for these for these moves, but it’s starting to look like the Dayton Moore regime is getting a little stale.
