Julio Urias Suspended 20 Games

By Ty Bradley | August 17, 2019 at 3:21pm CDT

Dodgers lefty Julio Urias has been suspended 20 games under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse policy, MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick reports. Per Jorge Castillo of the LA Times, the suspension includes the five games Urias served while on administrative leave. Urias will not appeal the decision and will be eligible for postseason play.

The 22-year-old Urias was arrested May 13 in Los Angeles after eyewitnesses and video reports showed the hurler “shoving a female companion to the ground.” He was placed on administrative leave the following day, during which time he missed the five aforementioned contests.

The former top prospect has enjoyed a solid 2019 campaign – mostly in a long relief role – after returning late last season from a gruesome shoulder injury that sidelined him for nearly 15 months. In 67 2/3 IP this season, the lefty’s posted a 2.53 ERA/3.59 FIP with an 8.91 K/9 against 3.06 walks per nine.

The Dodgers’ public statement on the matter reads as follows:

“While we are disappointed in what occurred and support the decision by the Commissioner’s Office, we are also encouraged that Julio has taken responsibility for his actions and believe he will take the necessary steps to learn from this incident.”

Guy is going to be eligible for the postseason. So, you can be suspended for the first-time ever with a banned substance and not be eligible for the postseason, but this guy can toss around female companion on video and still play on MLB’s biggest stage. Not sure how I feel about it, but that doesn’t sound right to me.

Welcome to America. Steroids enrage Bob Sportsfan because he didn’t make his college team as a walk-on, playing the game The Right Way. Whereas domestic violence is a hoax perpetrated by lib cucks.

Seriously, if fans complained about wifebeaters as much as “A-Roid,” the penalties would align with morality.

So for a “push”, which could’ve been the cause of heels or him trying to stop her from leaving or walking away, you want him to be banned from MLB? Have to seen the evidence yourself? Police didn’t even bother to charge him with anything. If his crime was so egregious, wouldn’t it be an open and shut case with video evidence? People like you overreacting to a lover’s quarrel with a moral high horse irritate me. He made a mistake. He’s serving 20 games, why should every woman boo him and he be banned from the league?

LADreamin: He avoided being criminally charged only because he agreed to a 52 week DV counseling program and only if he “commits no acts of violence against anyone.” And that’s with the woman refusing to cooperate as is the case with many victims. See Russell’s case where it came to light long before his wife agreed to come forward.

Sadly, most who hit, it’s rarely the first time and more than likely the last time.

See that’s where the disconnect is. You’re grouping him with habitual woman beaters when it could’ve been just an isolated incident. We. Do. Not. Know. The. Whole. Story. Stop assuming. That’s how things get misconstrued. If the video comes out and he completely Ray Riced her, then I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Until then, I’m reserving judgement. I’m sure Russell and Rice would’ve agreed to 52 weeks of therapy too, but it was way past that for them.

Its actually common sense for those who aren’t the moral police. PEDs are an attempt to enhance your game and thus cheat to make your club better. It makes sense they cant come back for October. Violence has all kinds of diffrent circumstances and simply suspending them all for October would be ridiculous. You cant keep guys out of the postseason for incidents that often get thrown out in court.

Do you feel good finding a way to defend domestic violence not being harsh enough? Why on earth would you actually argue this?

And yes, the HOF has a moral factor, and all players are raised with the notion that players are celebrities, so no, you are actually wrong in that it does “affect the integrity of the game” if you view the game as being more than wins and losses and instead an entire industry.

Integrity: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

Personally, I think baseball players should have a measure of integrity because they are public figures. MLB is desperately trying to appeal to kids so they can survive and they don’t need this.

It’s sad that people get more wound up about others people’s political and religious views than they do about abuse of women.

The way these comments seem to be going this comments section won’t stay open for long either. People need to understand that if they weren’t eyewitnesses to any of what happened they should not comment as if they were. As in all the previous cases the Commissioner ruled according to the joint policy and that’s that. Nothing more will be released or explained.

Guys the reason PED users are not allowed to play in the post season is because the owners pushed for it in the last CBA. You can’t just do that when you want the players union won’t go for it. I bet they change it in the next CBA. But everyone is trying to drop the mic pointing out the “moral hypocrisy”. These things happen as the CBA ages.

Man everyone is losing their minds. I bet it was nothing more serious than Elaine pushing Jerry in Seinfeld.

Posters when average person or other teams player…. no man should touch a women he should be jailed or never play sports again. I would never be a fan if my team kept him

Posters when it’s their teams player ….. it wasn’t as bad as what other teams player did. Let’s win the championship with him , I’m good .

Second chances are good…when the person in genuinely contrite and interested in self improvement.

Otherwise, it’s just an A Hole Mulligan.

Yes…. If you assault a female or a child even once you should lose your career and everything that comes with that… The only way to stop dpnestic violence is make the punishment so severe it makes people think about their actions beforehand.. On top of that, these guys get the PRIVILEDGE to play professional sports for millions of dollars a year so by stripping that away in situations like this it can help prevent instances in the future. I feel no sympathy for guys like this and i dont think it really matters what team you root for… I mean, ill bet all the men out there would feel alot different if it were their daughter these athletes were smacking around.. Just my thoughts

The problem with this comment and so many others is the presumption that you know what actually happened, when of course you’ve heard only third-hand rumors and so are simply guessing. The commissioner investigated this incident according to the joint policy and came to a judgment based on facts that none of us know, will ever know, or are entitled to know. So, stop guessing. I realize this is a whole lot less satisfying than jumping to conclusions based entirely on how you feel but it’s what responsible people do when they don’t actually know the facts.

Commissioner delayed announcement to make sure he was available vs. the Braves. More of the New York discrimination against Atlanta. Hard not to see it in everything the MLB does from determining punishments to deciding in-game challenges.

Oh, good grief. The commissioner investigated this incident for three freaking months and timed the suspension just so it could hurt the Braves?

Many of you are up in arms saying he punched a woman. He did not. “video reports showed the hurler “shoving a female companion …” Get your facts straight before you crucify him.

Thank you to the people who have commented that they will reserve judgment, because we know nothing. Everyone, with every incident that happens, no matter what it is, has an opinion and a judgement about everything! And then it’s like, well you either have to take a liberal or conservative side, and if you don’t take a liberal side, you’re somehow a Trump supporter which makes you a complete scumbag who should be demonized by the “good people” of the world. Sigh…I wonder when being rational, controlling emotion and impulse, and wisdom will become common values/practices? I wonder when people will stop reacting to everything. I also wonder when hypocrisy will end…”oh, yeah so, dude, it’s like so bad when a man shoves a woman, but like having abortions is totally ok…but what’s happening at the border man, is just like, awful, but oh, euthanasia is totally cool! And like, we should totally end homelessness, but like let’s totally promote drugs, sex, violence and like also not have many mental health services.” I mean, it’s just ridiculous! How about universal human dignity, and how about violence against anyone isn’t ok? How about we ditch moral relativism, which is hypocritical in and of itself, and pick up and bible and a catechism? How about we start actually believing in love, which is God, and stop being a culture of hatred and death?
