Shelby Miller Released After Opting Out Of Brewers Contract

By Jeff Todd | August 28, 2019 at 12:36pm CDT

The Brewers announced yesterday that righty Shelby Miller has been released. He “exercised the release clause in his contract,” per the announcement.

Miller, who is still just 28 years of age despite debuting way back in 2012, had inked a $2MM deal with the Rangers over the winter. The hoped-for bounceback simply did not occur, however, and he was cut loose after 44 innings of 8.59 ERA pitching.

When he landed with the Brewers, Miller was hoping that a fresh start at Triple-A would finally turn his fortunes after several injury-riddled, disappointing campaigns. He ended up throwing 32 2/3 frames over eight starts, producing a 4.13 ERA on 9.9 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9.

The Milwaukee organization evidently didn’t see enough to warrant a promotion. Instead, Miller will see if he can catch on elsewhere. The best-case scenario would probably be to sign with a club that has some 40-man roster flexibility and a need for innings down the stretch. (The Rangers will foot the bill for all but the league-minimum rate of pay.) Miller will be hoping that a late-season showcase can help boost his appeal in the coming offseason.

Aren’t the Cardinals still in the playoff hunt? Why on earth would they take a risk on someone like him?

He either needs to keep pitching in the minors until he figures things out or go on a team that’s out of contention and needs innings. I don’t think he’s getting any more major league deals.

I assume he meant the Cardinals should sign him to a AAA minor league deal. The reason being is that is his original team and he had success there.

He’s the kind of re-cycled starter that the White Sox seem to love signing. And the team clearly has a need for somebody to soak up the innings.

The White Sox don’t need to sign human batting practice machines to “soak up innings” anymore. They need a veteran TOR with playoff experience.

Um, those types are not on the waiver wire. If for some reason Justin Verlander or Clayton Kershaw get released, then yes they would be better options. But I wouldn’t pass on anyone else waiting for it because they need better.

Unfortunately for you there is no clock in baseball. You can’t sit on a lead or loss and let the time run. For you to soak up innings you would actually have to pitch well enough to get out major league hitters. If you had that ability you would probably be in a minor league system at the least. Not sitting here talking to us.

It really could possibly reset the clock for him so to speak. I mean he had success when he was traded to Atlanta but the trade to the Diamondbacks… Well you know.
I hope the best for this guy. He had the stuff. Here’s to him finding it again.

I used to smoke Winston’s and Salem’s. I think they stopped making Salems though. Probably because they make your mouth taste like a 46 year old Halls cough drop. Does that make me a legitimate candidate?

The walk rate is an issue but I think with the right pitching coach, he could be a passable reliever. He’s obviously got the arm and the stuff, just need to find some control and confidence.

I think this guy should sign with the Cardinals organization. That is the team that drafted him and he had a lot of success there. If that doesn’t work out he should try to go to the Braves organization. That is the team he had his best season with. Those are the only teams he has ever pitched well for. I don’t think he had any really bad seasons for either team. Once he tries both organizations out he will know it is time to throw the towel in. If you can’t find success try the places you have had success before. I know his triple A ERA isn’t exactly terrible but that strikeout to walk ratio is horrendous. I don’t know who performed his Tommy John surgery but if he chose any doctor other than James Andrews he has no one to blame but himself. James Andrews is the best Tommy John surgeon on the planet. I’ve watched guys like Smoltz and Hudson (amongst many, many others) get that surgery from Andrews and come back better than ever before. Andrews also did the “bloody sock” surgery for Schilling that allowed him to pitch in the WS as well as the surgery for Terrell Owens that allowed him to perform so well in the SuperBowl.

He has spent the year in some hitter friendly parks… maybe if he goes to a larger park? his K numbers are good at AAA. Gives up a lot of walks.

The Phillies have signed or traded for just about every other SP others didn’t want, so why not Shelby Miller. Actually was hoping Klentak would have taken a shot on Luiz Gohara who the Braves released. Guy, like Shelby Miller was all over the Top Prospects lists just a year or so ago. Angels, a team not usually known for its shrewdness, signed Gohara.

Agree with a previous poster, some team ought to make Miller a reliever. Let him grip-it-and-rip-it for an inning at a time.
