Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Could Return This Week

By Dylan A. Chase | August 20, 2019 at 10:57am CDT

Blue Jays rookie third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could be back in the Toronto lineup in short order, as Jon Morosi of MLB Network relays that the 20-year-old Canada native could return for this week’s tilt with the Dodgers (link). The team has apparently indicated that Vlad Jr.’s status is more “day-to-day than week-to-week”.

After tweaking his knee while fielding a groundball, Guerrero Jr. went for MRI testing–testing that ultimately showed only minor inflammation. After Padres rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. was shut down for the season following a back injury, there was trepidation that even a moderate issue would similarly spell the end of Vladito’s rookie campaign. About that rookie campaign, it’s fair to say that on-field results have been mixed–though ultimately very encouraging for a player of his age.

Across a sizable sample of 386 at-bats, Guerrero Jr. has slashed .274/.345/.464, while wRC+ indicates that he has been 13 percent better than a league-average hitter. When not inside the batter’s box, however, the infielder has shown some warts that the Jays surely hope will iron out as he matures, including a -4.4 BSR measurement on the bases and generally subpar defense as evidenced in part by his -4 DRS mark. The Blue Jays enter play in Los Angeles today with a 52-75 record.

so what? he’s Dominican by heritage and Canadian by birth. pretty sure that makes him both Canadian and Dominican.

Doesn’t speak english or french, Canada’s official languages. Will never represent Canada in International competition (which is fine). Not sure what part of loxcane’s comment you took issue with.

I disagree with the official language argument. There are a reasonable amount of non French or English speaking people who have been born in Canada. Be it immigrants, refugees, etc.

When you type in “Canada’s official language” you will see English and French. Care to disagree all you want.

$5 says he will represent both the Dominican and team Canada in the WBC at least once. he’s 20… lots of WBC’s left in his career….

I don’t think he can play for both. Once you play for a country, you can’t change. I believe.

That has more to do with keeping French around than excluding other languages. US has no official language.

I work in a factory that employs 40 people on the floor. 12 of them speak English worse than Vladdy jr. none of them speak French. Oh, and I live in Canada. Not sure what part of Darkside380 comment you took issue with.

The issue is he said Vlad Jr is Canadian. He’s Canadian in-name only. Vlad’s Dominican in his heart, and that’s fine. Very simple. Also do not care where you live or what you do for a living but thanks for divulging.

still in the ROY race too i warrant. if Gary didnt win with only a half. season played, Yordan is certainly not a slam dunk.

Vlad is not in the ROY race. Yordan has lapped him twice.

The ROY race is over my man, Yordan has that locked up. Vlad might be a good player in time but as of right now he’s sort of a disappointment and maybe it’s not all his fault but that hype was crazy and he’s been average at best.

Just doesnt move very well. He has to get his weight under control. The same thing that sounds great about him, his age, also makes the weight look even worse.

I wouldn’t even say that’s the problem. He obviously doesn’t have great range, but he just seems to struggle with some fairly routine plays a lot more than the average guy.

Someone needs to convince him to lose 40lbs (18kg over the border), or be more Cecil Fielder than Vladimir Sr. Those knees will be destroyed within 5 years on that turf.

And with all the shifting and pop flies he is running around on that turf. That and the “ fake dirt” will do in those needs eventually. The only solution is first base for Vlad Jr.

Hmmm, i agree with his body type and age factor. i hear you on his knees weight and artificial turf factor as well. needs to watch his weight for longevity in this game. that said, his future is likely 1B/DH. I would take Cecil over Prince if it ever comes to that with Vlad.
