Giants Promote Jaylin Davis

By Jeff Todd | September 4, 2019 at 3:30pm CDT

The Giants announced today that they have selected the contract of outfielder Jaylin Davis. He’ll take the 40-man roster spot of reliever Reyes Moronta, who was placed on the 60-day injured list.

Davis came to the San Francisco organization as part of the deadline deal that sent reliever Sam Dyson to the Twins. The former 25th-rounder was putting up big numbers in the upper minors at the time of the swap but was obviously deemed expendable by the Minnesota organization.

Since changing jerseys, Davis has continued to rake. Over the course of the year, he has posted well-above-average numbers at each stop: a 147 wRC+ at Double-A, 175 wRC+ in the International League, and 160 wRC+ in the Pacific Coast League.

It remains to be seen whether Davis will be able to apply his power consistently enough at the major-league level. But it’ll certainly be fun to see whether he can do so. We’ve seen other under-the-radar slugger types carry forward big upper-minors production into the bigs. If that’s the case for Davis, the Giants could have a steal. He’d have required a 40-man spot in advance of this winter’s Rule 5 draft regardless of today’s move, so there was little reason not to give him his first look now.

Woohoo! Let’s go Jaylin, let’s go Giants!

Hopefully he gets playing time not pinch hit 3x a week. Him and Shaw needs to start and see what they can do. One of the best RH power prospects and one of the best LH power prospects in the org.. Both 30+ HR potential

I wouldn’t expect much from Shaw. He got 62 PAs last season, and didn’t do squat with them. He struck out 23 times. I know that’s s small sample, but I’d be surprised if he gets that much playing time this season. His Sac numbers do suggest he has improved his SO rate, he went from 34% to 25%, but that still isn’t good.

He needs more time man lol can’t just expect prospects to rake out the gate. He is and will be a better option than Belt. I would put money if Shaw played a full season he would hit 28-35hr with a ops in the mid 8s. Yea he will strike out 150x but most power hitters tend to carry the wiff stick with them in there bat bag

There’s more to the game than just hitting. The fact that Shaw is a RH thrower is an automatic advantage to Belt defensively. Plus it’s doubtful he provides the level of defense that Belt does. Belt is a flawed player, and I would like to see someone better at 1B, but I seriously doubt that Shaw will come close to Belt’s career 120 OPS+ nor his career 121 wRC+.

The projections for Shaw are more in agreement with my assessment. Not that projections mean squat, but when all the research from ZiPS, Steamer, Depth Charts, and THE BAT see him with 77, 82. 79, and 78 wRC+ respectively, I think you should temper your expectations.

Belts by far the worst hitting 1b in all of baseball. Yes his D is great but he can get replaced with avg D and more production at the plate would make up for it. Same situation as Crawford. His D is great (although it’s declined this yr) and his bat sucks. The reason for the Giants poor season is from the Vets not producing at the plate. And what even makes it worse is the balls are juiced this yr for more HR and higher scores and yet they still can’t get nothing done. It’s sad

“Belts by far the worst hitting 1b in all of baseball.”

Not really. His BA is 13th in MLB, 12th in OBP. Because he’s last among qualifiers in SLG, that also makes him last in OPS. But last is 15th. Like I said, there are only 15 qualifiers, bot there are 30 teams. You can’t really say he’s the worst, even though he is having the worst season of his career.

If he continues to struggle next season, by all means, start looking at other guys, even Shaw, at 1B. But he does have a career record that Shaw probably cannot match.

Being objective about Belt, I can see the Giants moving on from him. But Shaw is not going to hit well enough to make up for his lesser defense.

People who are down Belt like Shaw because he isn’t Belt. But different doesn’t mean better.

Disappointing play from most of the veterans and bad starting pitching. Bum and Samardjiza have been passable but Beede, Rodriguez, Anderson have been mostly terrible. Same with Pomerantz and Holland when they were here. Webb looks like he could be a building block, and it will be interesting to see how Cueto does when he comes back. They definitely need to take a looks at bringing in some starting pitching in the off-season.

Shaw just needs playing time to prove that he can play at the big league level. He’s been fairly consistent since he’s been a pro. He even worked on his K/B rate that Farhan wanted him to and did quite well in just 1 season. And j can see it getting better as he gets more experience

Poor season? Pickle, I see this season as a success. The minors are doing great, Zaidi patched together a solid outfield, and the team is worth watching. Sure they aren’t going to make the playoffs, but after last season I see a lot more potential than I did the previous two years. Bum and Shark are pitching great, and there’s potential showing with some of the young ‘uns.

I think back to opening day and what was trotted out on the field (especially the outfield) versus what we will see in the coming days and it’s night and day.

Belt is gone. Zaidi will wave his magic wand and get rid of him for anything. I don’t think Shaw is the answer, so maybe they can find a reclamation project or move someone else to first.

This offseason I hope they don’t dive into the free agent market too much. I see Zaidi grabbing another #4 or #5 veteran who hopefully toss around 160-200 innings.

This time last year they had a better record. I know things are looking bright for them in the future and Zahdi has done quite well adding productive players. The farm is also looking up. I’m saying is that the vets really have struggled this year and if they want to improve they need to be replaced or get it together. There getting older and it’s time for the youth to step in and steer this team in the right direction. Having a new coach next year hopefully won’t keep putting the struggling vets out there everyday.

When a middle of the road team doesn’t rebuild, reload and stands in the middle of the pack, it’s not a season of success. Surprises? Yes. Something to be excited about? Maybe. Success? No. Not quite.

They did reload though. They got younger, shedded payroll, and their farm system isn’t exactly bottom of the pack anymore. This season was a resounding success, considering most of the fans were preparing for another number 1 pick.

I’ve seen a hundred guys like Shaw, and most were AAAA guys. He turns 26 next month, so while not old, he isn’t particularly young either. I could be wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time, but from what I’ve seen I wouldn’t bet the farm that he’s anything special.

Look at luke voit , he was in and out of the lineup for the Cardinals 124 ab 4hr .240avg. Then he goes to the Yankees gets consistent playing time and got to show them what he can do. The Giants need to do this for Shaw and Davis. Can’t just expect to give someone 60-100ab spread out a bunch of games not playing consistently and they always do good. Some players need to play everyday so they can work on things and make adjustments. It’s not like there in the hunt for the playoffs so it be beneficial to give them a look for the rest of the year to see if they can be apart of the 2020 team

Give Davis and Shaw some steady AB’s to see if they are worth taking up a spot on the 40 – man roster next year….

There’s no way he’s healthy. Every swing looks uncomfortable and there’s no smoothness to anything he’s doing right now. Shut him down before he really does something to set himself back for next year.

Put Shaw at 1st base for the remainder of the season and let’s see what he can do with constant playing time. Not in and out of the lineup. He will hit for more power and average than Belt has done this year.

Makes no sense rolling Belt out there everyday when no team in their right mind would want that bad contract. Nothing he can do will make him look anymore tradeable for next year. Slater should be playing everyday since for the last 2 years he has hit in limited duty. Test him as a everyday player.

Slater isn’t getting much playing time because of Bochy. Come next yr with a new coach the guys struggling will ride pine. No favoritism.

This year? Way to qualify your assertion knowing Belt is having the worst year of his career. Will Shaw approach Belt’s career OPS+ and wRC+ numbers? Doubtful.

There are tons of guys that rack up good AAA numbers, but facing major league pitching is another thing. I would love to see the Giants upgrade over Belt at 1B, but just because a guy isn’t Belt, doesn’t make him an improvement.

I understand tad’s lack of enthusiasm for Shaw, but I will also say that Shaw’s 1B defensive numbers in the minors were not far apart from Belt’s. Given Belt’s contract, ongoing offensive decline, and Zaidi’s overall approach, I wouldn’t be surprised if Shaw didn’t get a look the remainder of the year at 1B.

IIRC the trouble with minor league defensive stats is they don’t have the advanced metrics. I don’t like the zone ratings, but Defensive Runs Saved seems far better than errors and FLD%. Those traditional stats are flawed. I have doubts that Shaw will be able to match Belt’s career 56 DRS.

If they pull Belt, and start auditioning others at 1B, it don’t think it will be this year. 2020 is another story, if Belt can’t progress to his mean numbers.

Why does it have to be Shaw one any giants farmhand?

Just like the new OF plucked from other teams, Zaidi can find a 1B, which is usually easier to find.

Whoever they replace Belt with, which I’m not against, needs to actually be better than Belt. Too many people think anyone is an improvement. The idea of replacing Belt with Shaw is the perfect example of that. I’m all for replacing anyone if the guy coming in is a better all around guy.

But remember Zaidi is an analytics guy. He understands the value of defense and a guy who gets on base. Belt isn’t your traditional 1B guy, but that doesn’t mean he lacks value, as frustrating as he can be. Replacing him with a guy that can’t lay off the breaking ball in the dirt, in hopes of a few more HRs isn’t that guy.

Exactly. He is doing his swan song this month. I highly doubt he cares if kids play over the veterans he’s surrounded himself with the last few years. He wants to give Belt as many ABs as he can so Belt can try to boost his season stats for the looming off-season. I would bet pink slips Brandon Belt will not be showing up in orange and black next season.

I love Bochy but am excited about next season when someone who has no loyalty to any player comes in.
