Sam Dyson’s Season In Jeopardy

By TC Zencka | September 20, 2019 at 6:56pm CDT

SEPT. 20: Dyson indicated Friday that he’s likely to undergo surgery next week, per Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News.

SEPT. 14, 4:10pm: Indeed, Miller reported that season-ending shoulder surgery is on the table for Dyson, who felt pain in his shoulder just two pitches into a bullpen session on Friday. Per Miller, the Twins’ midseason acquisition underwent a procedure that pointed to a joint capsule sprain in Dyson’s right shoulder, which may call for Dyson to go under the knife.

11:20am: More bad news today from the suddenly snakebitten Minnesota Twins. Trade deadline acquisition Sam Dyson is unavailable this weekend, and he may not return at all this season, per Phil Miller of the Star Tribune (via Twitter).

Dyson spent a short stint on the injured list at the beginning of August with right bicep tendinitis. He cut a throwing session short yesterday after feeling discomfort early in the session. He has scheduled a visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache next week, tweets MLB.com’s Dan Hayes.

It certainly doesn’t look good for Dyson, who has struggled since joining the Twins. After notching a 2.47 ERA/2.72 FIP across 49 appearances in San Francisco, Dyson’s Minnesota tenure began with a thud as he surrendered 6 earned runs while recording just two outs across his first two appearances. His overall numbers as a Twin remain ugly, but he’s straightened out since making an early impression. Dyson penned a 2.53 ERA over his next ten appearances, last pitching on September 3rd in Boston.

Dodged a bullet with that one. Jaylin Davis looking a little AAAA at this point, so kind of a wash.

He’s had like 15 ABs, how can you judge him as AAAA?

Because this is the internet and any idiot with a computer can be a GM, even if they obviously have no idea what they’re talking about.

He’s looked overmatched at this point. On the other hand, Dubon has been very promising.

*AntiBelt It’s not a matter of hits, it’s a matter of how he’s looked at the plate. We have about 15 games to go. Giants need an idea on what they’re going to do. Like Dickerson. Bochy even stayed he would need to play here on out to prove himself for next year.

He’s far from a AAAA player. You aren’t even close to using the term correctly. But, whatever you have to tell yourself to avoid having to criticizing the team you cheer for… typical sentiment in today’s age.

Its crazy, i cant remember where he said it, but he said his arm started bothering him in an outing in Colorado in mid july. I remember watching him and thinking something was wrong, he kept shaking his arm and took super long pauses between pitches. I thought maybe it was just the altitude because the trainers never came out. Then he kept pitching in more games after that before he got traded. But its weird, i really did think he got hurt the day he probably did get hurt.

The Twins caught a break here. Dyson would have cost the Twins at least two games in the playoffs all by himself. He tends to implode when the pressure is on.

Agree about Jaylin, he appears to be guessing and not driven a single ball for a loud out.

He’s a September call up, nobody 8s judged by September games unless they do amazing. And even then it’s always asterisked.

    The Twins received damaged goods.
They should be going back to the Giants and the League,
    To seek reimbursement and justice.

The twins need go look at their own medical department because Dyson passed their review before they approved the trade. This isn’t another separate database controversy, the giants didn’t hold back information.

The trade happened a minute before the deadline. I’m guessing it wasn’t enough time to make it contingent upon a physical exam.

There will never be any proof (if it’s even true) that the Giants gave us damaged goods. We have to move on. We have him next year which I huge part of why Davis was even on the table. To everyone doubting Davis after a handful of ML at bats y’all should be ashamed of yourselves for being that unaware and stupid.

Ashamed? I’m rooting this guy on. We want him to succeed. What we don’t want is someone who needs three seasons in the Majors to prove themselves…AKA Belt… AKA never lived up to the hype.

It’s a tough pill to swallow for the Twins for sure, but I think they still have the upper hand in the Twins/Giants trade history – the Nathan/Liriano/Bonser trade to the Twins for a jack-ass catcher worked out pretty well on the Minnesota side.

I’m still fine with trading Dyson, it made sense on paper, it just didn’t work out. Although now that we’re legit contenders, coming into the offseason Falvey should make finding a closer his priority. Whether that’s signing Will Smith, trading for Diaz, or both I don’t care, I just don’t want Rogers closing games; he’d be much more valuable in a Hader-like role.

I wonder if they’ll seek compensation because he didn’t disclose an injury to either teams. I don’t blame the giants because there is nothing I’ve seen that they knew other than discomfort.

At least the twins have had good things happen like dobnak to help their pen at least as a long reliever in playoffs.

I’m hoping may, Rodgers, and romo can hike it together – they can be a solid back end.

It does seem wrong to me that Dyson knew he had been hurting for a long time but apparently said nothing about it to either team.

I Love when writers post an article in mid-September, and make a big deal out of a guy having ……”Season-Ending Surgery”….or say “His Season Is In Jeopardy”.

C’mon folks…..we’re talking about “a couple weeks”…..which is what the DL used to be.

How ’bout they just say “going to miss the last couple weeks”…..???

I’ll take “Well, that trade didn’t work out” for $400 Alex
