Latest On Angels’ Managerial Vacancy

By Steve Adams | October 2, 2019 at 11:04am CDT

Owner Arte Moreno, frustrated with the Angels’ fourth consecutive losing season, was the one who ultimately pushed for a managerial change, reports Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. And although the timing of Brad Ausmus’ dismissal as Angels manager aligned rather conveniently with the news that Joe Maddon was out as Cubs manager, general manager Billy Eppler said in a conference call yesterday that Ausmus’ status was being debated even before the availability of other veteran candidates (i.e. Joe Maddon) was known.

Perhaps most interestingly, Fletcher adds that while there’s been heavy speculation about the Angels and Maddon, there had been no contact between the two sides as of Tuesday. Maddon wasn’t fired and is technically under contract with the Cubs through the end of October, although the Cubs organization clearly wouldn’t stand in the way of him talking with other teams at this point.

A lack of contact between the two sides certainly doesn’t mean that there won’t be any at all. To the contrary, it’d be a genuine surprise if Maddon didn’t emerge as a viable contender for the job. At the same time, the fact that the two sides haven’t even talked suggests that Maddon to the Angels perhaps isn’t set in stone. To that end, MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger lists Angels special assistant Eric Chavez, Astros bench coach Joe Espada and former Yankees manager Joe Girardi as possible candidates. Girardi, who publicly voiced a desire to return to the dugout just this morning, knows Eppler quite well from the pair’s days with the Yankees. Eppler, though, made clear yesterday that he needs to sit down with Moreno and team president John Carpino to formulate a list of interview candidates.

Furthermore, Eppler was emphatic in taking accountability for the Angels’ poor season. “I want to make it clear Brad is not solely responsible for the result of our season,” said the GM in yesterday’s call. “The majority of our short-term acquisitions that we made this past offseason did not produce to their forecast. And those failures lie with me.”

Indeed, the trio of Matt Harvey, Trevor Cahill and Cody Allen proved unproductive, although Eppler did make some shrewd pickups over the past year. Right-hander Hansel Robles has proven to be one of the more successful waiver claims in recent memory, and Eppler nabbed another waiver gem just prior to Opening Day when he claimed Brian Goodwin off release waivers from the Royals organization. Those additions might’ve provided some bright spots this season, but the team’s starting pitching situation remains bleak and will surely be an area of focus for the Angels as the offseason approaches.

I want Ray Searage in Anaheim more than any manager available. Angels are so desperate for any kind of pitching help.

You can have him, see how well the Pirates pitchers did in the past. The ones who left did much better

I feel like Searage is not as good as the pro-Searage people make him out to be this pitcher whisperer and not as bad as the anti-Searage people make him being a guy that pitchers are better off getting away from. I just think he has had great success with some guys and just wasn’t the right coach for others.

I’m with you Ace. Seems like every public figure is either blindly loved or hated nowadays when in reality they have both good and bad points. No coach will work well with everybody.

From a distance, he looks like a solid coach to me.

Searage is very very good at one specific thing. His problem is that he takes the same approach for every pitcher, rather than trying to find individual solutions.

Plus on Searage: Pirates always had a competent bullpen (besides this year) and very good closers. As well as a lot of decent reclaimation success. Negative on Searage: Could never turn great prospects into great players. He’ll definitely get a job somewhere else, probably another small payroll team where he can work his magic on secondhand disappointments and fallen talent. Definitely had something to crank out so many dominant closers.

Check the Pirates pitching especially during the second half before praising Searage. Recall he couldn’t do much with Morton, Glasnow, and Cole who have all excelled after leaving Pittsburgh.

        LaStella 3B
        Fletcher 2B
        Simmons SS

There’s a good shot Cozart’s career is over. He still did not have full range of motion in his shoulder as of this summer; definitely not enough range to effectively swing a bat.

Fletcher, Simba, La Stella, and Rengifo to go along with Albert will be the infield barring some trades.

Cozart needs to go. Trade or release him outright. He’s a failed acquisition. Rengifo is an error machine. Unless they make a bang bang acquisition in the infield, Fletcher, La Stella, and Simmons need to be their guys with Thaiss in rotation as he improves.

But let’s get real, pitching is the dire need. And getting rid of Justin Upton…

Upton was hurt way worse than the press reported (they announced eoy). He isnt gonna be a world beater, but you can expect a much better version next year.

Upton is a career mediocre .266 hitter. He would have to not only improve but be better than his career numbers to be an asset. Plus his defense is lazy at best. He needs to go, but unfortunately, he’s locked in. I’ve never understood the Upton hype.

Unrelated to the manager search but Eppler needs an assistant GM with a solid Free Agent track record. His strength of under the radar trades and unearthing waiver gems needs to be supplemented by a mind who excells in evaluating free agent talent. I get that we’ve been”in” on some good players but we need to turn that into actually signing them

The Angels paid a lot of money for Harvey, Allen, and Cahill, but they were all one year contracts, which means they were all fliers.

I thought the strategy of not committing years to free agents was a great one. Now the Angels will commit years to good pitchers, and that’s the right move.

Agreed but with the above mentioned dart tosses he missed the board entirely. Add Bour and Lucroy to that mix. It’s not like there were no dumpster dives that worked out around the league. Epps free agent track record is bad. Going 0/5 last year was brutal…

If he actually signed Corbin and/or Keuchel, Eovaldi, etc. there’s likely no way they could be in on Cole. And I’d rather wait for a chance at Cole than risk more injuries out of Corbin.

Don’t worry Billy will sign some more garbage this off-season believing that they’ll help the team and that will ultimately put Eppler on the hot seat which could possibly have him pushed out of the door

I wonder what is considered official contact. Maddon and Arte go back quite a ways and are generally considered if not friends, then friendly. I’m confident they have dinner during the off season and during Spring Training.

Is a text among friends contact? Tampering?

Everyone thinks Maddon is a guarantee to the Angels. Maybe so , just not the Maddon everyone thinks. It will MaddEn as in John. His plan will be simple. Pitchers throw strikes or sit. Hitters hit a home run or sit. Outfield catch the damn ball or sit. Then instead of the world series we will see trout on Madden 2020

Can we get a manager that allows pitchers to go more that 4-5 innings. Pitcher walks one guy and boom he goes to the bullpen. It’s frustrating. Angels aren’t exactly running out studs in the bullpen to replace the starters.

And how many times did those young pitchers show they couldn’t get through the third time in the order? A lot. That’s why. Meanwhile the Rays just advanced to the ALDS using similar strategies. In the case of the Rays, however, they just have better arms in the same spots.

      My Angel Prediction

      Garrett Cole 6/210
      Jake Odrizzi 4/61
Flyer deal on either Nova or Pineda
Martin Maldandado 2yr deal (Shoehi wants his boy)

      Trade for:
Either Austin Hedges or Austin Barnes

I think there will be more, but thats my take.

Explain the Yankees being a 100 win team while paying Giancarlo Stanton to be injured all season, something the Angels have never had to deal with in Pujols. Big contracts are a poor excuse. Yankees are where they are because they took the time to rebuild their farm system with tons of money to supplement. Same with the Dodgers.

Koamalu – That number seems high. We lose Cahill, Harvey, Allen, and Lucroy totaling about $32m. This year was about $181m (per spotrac.com), minus the 32 is about $149m. Assume we buy out Calhoun, that drops to $135m going into winter this year. These are very rough numbers, but what am I missing besides arb eligible players?
