Manfred Reportedly Told Oakland Officials That A’s Could Move To Las Vegas

By Jeff Todd | October 8, 2019 at 11:55am CDT

Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf said today that Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred has indicated that he sees Las Vegas, Nevada as a possible relocation spot for the Athletics, Sal Castaneda of KTVU reports on Twitter. Manfred’s threat of exploring options in Vegas had been reported recently by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The newly combative stance from MLB’s top official arose after the city of Oakland filed a surprise suit to block a major portion of the A’s stadium plans. Manfred’s already reported comments conveyed a thinly veiled warning that the team and league could consider alternatives. But it was not known that he had specifically floated Las Vegas as a realistic possibility.

Vegas holds particular allure for Major League Baseball and special meaning to Oakland-area fans. After all, Sin City just lured away the Raiders with a massively subsidized new stadium. Whether or not there’s further appetite in Nevada for taxpayer-funded facilities isn’t really clear, but it is at least a facially plausible threat for the commissioner to make. Notably, though, local officials said they were unaware of any actual discussions to this point, per the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Several other cities have been mentioned at times as potential relocation spots, but it’s not clear which if any would be serious possibilities with the Rays already flirting with Montreal.

Manfred has made clear plenty of times in the past that his strong preference is for the Athletics to remain in Oakland. And the A’s have worked hard to come up with a workable plan built around private financing (which isn’t to say that significant public support wouldn’t be involved). There are surely still plenty of pathways for that result, though it’s also certain that team and league have little appetite for too many more campaigns in the Coliseum.

This is the Mayor that told illegals to scatter when when she was told by ICE that a raid was coming.

As for the history of Oakland City Council – it’s not been accountable for much of anything regarding pro sports. The Raiders moved out. Came back when the LA City Council reneged on the deal that brought them there. Then another Oakland City Council reneged on a new deal which brought the Raiders back, while Las Vegas happily gave the Raiders a far, far better deal. And the Warriors – playing across the street in Oakland – are getting a new, state-of-the-art arena…..across the Bay in San Francisco.

So like all Cities run by a certain political party – it’s always someone else’s fault when they don’t do their jobs and people go elsewhere and succeed.

With a crime rate of 74 per one thousand residents, Oakland has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes

People are literally dying to live there.

Have a nice time in St. Louis. Take some nightly strolls. If you survive, try Chicago, then Detroit, If you survive that, buy a lottery ticket.

I won’t tell you to shut up, you can talk all you want, this is America. Of course the people you bump into are likely to tell you to shut up.

Maybe MLB should force the A’s and Giants and Pirates owners all to sell, as they are clearly being petty billionaires at the expense of the game.

That Bay Area has enough money and people for FOUR TEAMS. But the disgusting greedy pig Giants owners want it all for one team only. We need the A’s in Oakland and the Rays in San Jose, ASAP. Screw “territorial rights” – the market needs to be split evenly, not having Giants team stores in Walnut Creek.

Back in the 1980s and early 1990s they drew 3 million fans and were way more popular than the Giants.. Then came Mount Davis to wreck the ambiance and sightlines and the Haas family sold the team in 1995. It’s been a downward spiral since.

The current ownership invests zero money into the team and the stadium is a dilapidated toilet bowl.. The city doesn’t seem too interested in keeping any of the teams. Sometimes it’s just time for a team to move to greener pastures. They are the Montreal Expos of the 2010s.

I’m all for supporting small markets (I’m an Indians fan, so believe me I get it), but I think Oakland is doing this to itself. I feel bad for the fans, but I can’t really feel bad for the city itself.

Oakland is basically playing chicken with the A’s and MLB, and I feel like they’re being pretty uncooperative even though the A’s are at least trying to be flexible and work with the city. Oakland already lost the Raiders and the Warriors, and the Raiders in particular seemed to have one foot out the door the entire time, but it’s still worth mentioning. All this being considered, you’d think they’d put in a better effort (or at least cooperate) to try keeping the A’s in the city, but the A’s will probably leave soon too and I’d have a tough time blaming anyone other than the city for it.

Dude your crying over spilt milk, San Jose voters turned down the Giants movie there in the early 90’s. So why do you think they would vote for an A’s stadium ? and by the way the Giants own rights tithe South Bay, which includes San Jose.

Generally, the territorial rights of any team extends to a radius of 75 miles. Adjustments have to be made of course for cities with multiple teams, which is why adding a 3rd team in NY is highly improbable. But teams can be overruled despite those rights, as the Expos moving to Washington, which was within the area that the Orioles had territorial rights, shows.

If a team leaves a one team area they cede those rights to any team that might relocate to that city in the future. In the case of a multi-team metro area, they would cede those rights to the remaining team(s). So Oakland, would automatically come under the territorial rights of the Giants. They, of course would then fight against any team relocating to Oakland in the future, as the O’s did, but like the O’s, would maybe not be able to stop it,

The Giants and A’s territorial rights extend to Reno.
        Seattle’s extend to central Oregon.

It’s ridiculous how far those rights go.

You may be confusing maps showing the area of fandom with the actual territorial rights. Most articles you can find deal with all sorts of issues like broadcast range, sales of team gear, etc. The clearest definition I found was here:

          newballpark.org/2008/05/16/a-territorial-rights-pr…

It says; “The Athletics’ territory includes Alameda and Contra Costa Counties”

“The Giants’ territory includes San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Marin Counties, plus Santa Clara County with respect to another major league team”

You are wrong. The Dodgers have no territorial rights in SoCal. The Giants were gone in 92 until McGowen stepped in and negotiated those rights. The Orioles have been fighting the Nats for years over perceived rights. Clearly MLB didn’t think they had any territorial rights

        Reply
        • Jean Matrac

No you are wrong. The Dodgers share territorial rights with the Angels.

“The Dodgers’ and Angels’ territory includes Orange, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties”

How am I wrong when I said, that, despite the territorial rights “teams can be overruled”. And why are you citing the Nats move into the O’s territory to me, when that was the example I used showing that teams are overruled.

Maybe you need to work on your reading comprehension. Especially since we weren’t even talking about the Dodgers. Though I can guarantee you they would fight any attempt to put another team in LA. And given the relative influence of the two teams, the Dodgers might have a better chance to succeed than the O’s did.

Montreal will draw less than Tampa by playing at old Olympic Stadium. To help their attendance they need to be in the AL East with Toronto, New York and Boston. They will travel to their games to ensure they reach 10,000 fans for a night.

Who do you move around then? My brother and. I have discussed this topic and tried to rearrange teams in divisions to see if we could come up with a “perfect” solution. No matter how you decide to rearrange the deck chairs you’re still on the titanic. There will be at least one division that gets screwed location wise no matter how you want to divvy them up. The two Florida teams are near nothing but Atlanta. You can’t ever make a division there that makes geographical sense.

I can’t see the sense in moving the Rays to the NL if they move to Montreal. They’re already in the AL, and would be natural rivals for the Blue Jays, plus road teams could visit both cities on one trip, making across-the-border travel much easier.

There are more Expos fans outside of Montreal than in Montreal. Growing up watching the Expos on TV brought fans from all over the country. Unfortunately the team needs local support. They didn’t get that for the last 20+ years of their existence.

As for the new stadium they have a funding problem. The province is in serious debt. If they offer tax dollars for a new stadium there will be a problem and a fight. They need every dollar coming from private funding, and that’s tall order. City might give the team a sweetheart land deal, but the labour and building costs will be outrageous.

I think you’re wrong. I attended 2 games there back when they were competing for the post-season and the park, as awful as it was, was full. The fans were enthusiastic, and it was a great atmosphere. They got screwed by the strike, and admittedly were slow to come back, but that is now distant past. The Rays are a winning team, and I have no doubt that they would be supported far better in Montreal than they are in Tampa.

Tad – even when Montreal contended for the postseason in 1993 and 1994 they were underwhelming in the attendance department. Their attendance after the strike was downright awful and WORSE than Tampa’s output.

Tampa needs to be closer to Tampa and not in St Petes on an island. That will solve everything. Being in Montreal where they do not care about baseball (they don’t, proof is an online search away). I’ve spoken to Rays fans and when the highways close due to weather they simply can’t helicopter in.

In 1994 they played only 114 games. The Expos drew 1,276,250 that season. The NYYs drew only 1,675,556. The Expos out-drew 7 teams including the Mets. All 7 of those teams are still in the city they were then.

That attendance in 1994 projects to 1.813M for 162 games. In their 22 seasons, the Rays have drawn more than that only 4 times.

They only outdrew 7 teams with the best record in baseball and a subway system running below the stadium where you can walk in? Wow!

6 of the final 7 seasons the Expos drew under a million, and they only broke 1-mil thanks to games in Puerto Rico. Montreal, like Tampa, needed another city to help boost their attendance issues. To date, Tampa has NOT fallen below a million fans in a season. Montreal, 6 times.

There is nothing attractive about putting baseball back in Montreal. They were below league average after 1983. There are many US cities more deserving with a better economic situation than Montreal Quebec.

A subway directly under a stadium is not worth much when that stadium is a bad one. And it’s not like that stadium was in town. You have to ride out of town to get to it.

So what if the Expos were a first team? That was only one time BTW, which was the strike year, and that’s a mitigating factor. The Rays have been a better team, actually going to the WS, and they still do not draw as well as the Expos did,

The Rays drew 1,178,735 this season going to the PS. Yeah, it’s over 1M but come on. That’s pathetic.

Every single season where the Expos drew less than 1M was a bad season on the field, except for 2002. Otherwise every one was sub-..500, Do you expect fans to turn out for a losing team?

Washington is the perfect example of why you cannot assume that Montreal will not draw fans. The bad, second generation, Senators had horrible attendance but. It’s a different story in D.C. now.

I lied; Montreal drew below 1-million a total of 9 times out of 36 seasons. A clip of 25%.

Do I expect last place teams to draw fans? Well, if the new Expos fall to dead last should they pull the franchise from that city for a second time? Montreal’s stadium is out of the way, absolutely. So is Tampa. Tampa is in St. Petersburg on an island. Find a way to build a stadium in Tampa and the problem is solved. Move the team to Montreal and you have:

          – The same bad stadium
          – The same bad location
          – The same disinterest within the city
          – A much worse economy than Florida
          – A much worse economy than nearly every state in America
          – Stadium plans with no funding thanks to that bad economy
          – A franchise with fans who don’t live in Montreal
          – The threat of snow in April, May, even September and definitely October. The plans call for an open stadium
          – A city where Baseball is not #1 or #2 in their hearts

Yep, let’s put a franchise there. Smart move!

Oakland is a danger to the sport. I don’t like Manfred for all the changes he’s making to the game, but he is 100% correct to force the city’s hand here. Either they back off and allow the A’s to stay or they draw their line in the sand and the team leaves. Period.

I don’t understand how the city of Oakland can block a team from spending its own money to purchase and develop land. Oakland clearly does not want to have professional sports; the Warriors left for a shiny new arena in SF, the Raiders were run out of town and the A’s are about three years away from leaving one way or the other.

Good on Manfred, effectively telling Oakland to back down or risk losing all that tax revenue.

This strikes me as a massive failure of the political nature on both Lew Wolfe and MLB. The idea that they can’t find a palatable deal given the general corruption of local politics and enormous war chest of cash on both the team front as well as the league pot, it has to come down to greed. They are so used to getting a deal that ONLY benefits MLB that they wont budge on anything.

Also on my back of the envelope math the A’s are trash and depriving their fans of a team based on greed. If we consider attendance a wash in that they make what they spend on the team then the A’s are taking in:

    2018 Rev Share : $118mm
    2018 National Rev Share: $90mm
    2018 Tv Deal: $48mm

    Total rev: $256mm

MLB is quietly forcing an outcome they want, NOT trying to solve the problem you think.

    A’s fans should riot.

My guess is you would feel differently if the situation were reversed. What if the A’s were in the Bay Area first? Territorial rights extend a radius of 75 miles meaning the South Bay would already have been in the A’s territory, when the Giants move to the Bay Area later. Now suppose the A’s are the more popular team in the South Bay .Remembering that the largest share of revenue is from TV. Why would the A’s allow the Giants to move to SJ thereby losing an incredible amount of money?

You may be an A’s fan living in the South Bay, but you are in the minority. SJ is the largest of the 3 cities, and the TV revenue generated there is immense. It’s not a matter of the Giants just not sharing. It’s the matter of a huge amount of money, and I guarantee you, the A’s would have done the same thing to the Giants if the situation were reversed.

The A’s fans are the ones getting the shaft. The problem is very simple, they need a new Stadium. The current one is at end of life and is no longer fit for football or baseball. The fan support seems to be there. However, the big question as always is who pays for the stadium. Tax payers shouldn’t. Maybe they can kick in with some sort of assistance. Someone creative needs to step in but they are always in short supply. I suspect they will end up in Las Vegas. Too bad for the fans in Oakland.

The owner of the A’s tried to get the city off the hook for about $150 million in bonds they can’t afford to pay in exchange for being granted the land, which sits next to a war zone, to build a new ballpark.

I could go on and on about the longstanding ineptitude of Oakland “leadership” but let’s just say I bet a good friend years ago that Oakland would completely screw up the stadium situation and see the A’s leave and I’m confident I’ll collect that money.

Just out of curiosity with everyone mentioning other cities to move to, what would happen to the minor league teams already based in the cities there?

I imagine it would be a complicated process. If they stay, their attendance would plummet, if they move, they have stadiums (some newer than others) that go empty and hardly used.

Plus the ownership of those minor league teams would probably fight a MLB team moving in on their territory.

That’s got to be another thing to consider.

Would be a shame to see A’s leave Oakland. Instead I’d rather see a team like the Rays move to a baseball city like Montreal.

Athletics should move to San Antonio, They could get a fanbase of both Austin and San Antonio, and their revenue would be big. I’m not a genius but that’s a suggestion. Because of a third possible AL West team in Texas, they should switch one of the Texas teams to the NL and switch the Padres or Diamondbacks to the AL.
