Padres Interview Brad Ausmus

By Connor Byrne | October 9, 2019 at 10:30pm CDT

The Padres have narrowed their managerial search down to “no more than five men,” Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes. The club interviewed experienced major league manager Brad Ausmus for the role on Wednesday, according to Acee. Jon Heyman of MLB Network previously reported the two sides would likely meet to discuss the job.

It’s been a whirlwind couple weeks for the 50-year-old Ausmus, whom the Angels fired Sept. 30 after just one season in the position. The Angels mustered a horrid 72-90 record under Ausmus in 2019, though it would be unfair to place all the blame on him after the team dealt with so much adversity that was out of his control. Injuries to key players weighed the Angels down throughout the season, but there was no worse blow than the death of one of their top starters, Tyler Skaggs, on July 1.

Before Ausmus’ lone year running the Angels’ dugout and clubhouse, he managed the Tigers to a 314-332 record with one playoff berth from 2014-17. Ausmus is also well-known for a long run as a major league catcher from 1993-2010, during which he played his first three-plus seasons with the Padres. He now has a home in San Diego, Acee notes.

Along with Ausmus, Rangers player development field coordinator Jayce Tingler and former Rangers manager/current Braves third base coach Ron Washington are reportedly among the Padres’ candidates. But it’s not clear whether they’ve interviewed anyone other than Ausmus yet.

I was kind of surprised by how little he showed emotion. I remember how often it seemed he was getting thrown out of games when he managed the Tigers.

Not as much as I thought but I think he only got thrown out 1 time and that was because he was trying to protect Pujols I believe. Other than that he didn’t protect his players often as he should have

Was Ausmus a certifiably terrible manager, or is that simply consensus?

Verifiably terrible. Tigers had insane talent in a super weak central and they had to blow it up and start a rebuild because Ausmus is a wet noodle manager who couldn’t motivate his team to hustle.

Agreed. He was not a good motivator, terrible bullpen manager, and constantly got defensive during post game interviews and placed blame on other factors. A true leader takes responsibility for his team

They have to look like they’re doing something and conduct a couple interviews before they go after the big fish. They’re waiting for Girardi and Madden to make their decisions but Madden or Bochy would be their choice.

Let’s face it, the Padres front office has a limited budget. They are using old money, it’s not growing for them. There is no large corporation dumping millions into their coffers every year. Along with the poor choices in their local media outlets, they put their eggs in the basket of a nice stadium experience. That’s it.

They overpaid for Wil Myers and Eric Hosmer and, because of that, they get rid of a productive fan favorite in Franmil Reyes (he may be doomed as far as endurance goes because of his stature, but people rallied behind him).

They have allowed people in the front office, those who are no longer there in some cases, to torpedo the teateam’sms stated efforts to improve.

They need to go through and start cutting dead weight off at all levels of the club before they can expect to improve.

This is totally unrelated but Dave Roberts needs to be fired for having Joe Kelly pitching such an incredibly important inning. He certainly knows his players but there had to be a better option than this?? This is not the same Joe Kelly who was lights out in last year’s post-season

I’ve supported Roberts through all his pitching choice mishaps in the playoffs. But enough is enough. He needs to be let go.

Great call bringing in Kersh in the 7th to get one out. But to bring kersh back in the 8th? Terrible decision. Same with Kelly. He pitches a great 9th and Roberts, regrettably, brings him back in the 10th. Roberts just goes stupid in the post season.

I’ll start by saying I don’t like the Padres. That being said, they obviously underachieved this year. They need pitching and they’ve got the young arms and they protected them this year which is understandable. Machado needs to do better offensively. Reyes trade was necessary, he’s huge and had DH written all over him. You don’t want slappy Joe Maddon. Be patient but you’re definitely on the right track. This coming from a giants fan. How’d the Doyers do tonight? Relax. Padres are in good shape but yeah, don’t hire Ausmus.

They just have to wait to see who’s left over. They’re jockeying for Madden and it’s up to him either Angels or Padres. Madden may even wait out the Dodgers?

That being said I am pulling for the Friars to make the playoffs in 2020 so its going to take a miracle and a really good Mgr. plus three strong trades for ML players in this order, SP, OF, Middle RP

Tiger fan here. I know…thanks for your sympathy.

Brad Ausmus was an awful manager. He took a team with four starting pitchers who would go on to have at least 6 Cy Youngs combined, and got swept in the first round of the playoffs.

More relevant however, was his utter lack of fire. The Tigers would get screwed on a bad ump call, Ausmus would go chat with them, meekly nod his head, and go back to the dugout to spit some more seeds. Is it any wonder that players wouldn’t make diving catches or otherwise go all out for a Casper Milquetoast manager like that?

Of course its going to be someone Preller can use as a puppet and that’s unfortunate for Padre fans. Still say Washington at this point unless Roberts get the ax, but would Roberts come back to the Padres?

The fact that Clint Hurdle hasn’t even been mentioned for consideration is ridiculous to me. He would be my first choice. Checks all the boxes the Padres could want. No, he hasn’t won a World Series…. but sorry, those managers are few and far between and likely wouldn’t be interested in joining a padres team that have been swamped with failure for the better part of 10+ seasons. Clint Hurdle, in my opinion, has the experience, personality that commands respect, and has taken mediocre teams to exceed expectations on multiple occasions (in Pitt and Colorado). Sure, they’ve had bad teams…. but it’s the pirates and Rockies…. you aren’t going to have playoff contenders year in and year out. Same as in SD. But in terms of getting the MOST out of a roster, I have hurdle ranked much higher than Ausmus and others in that department. But Preller wants his Texas rangers buddies…… so this won’t happen. Not even an interview.

Most on here will hate on your Hurdle idea. I actually don’t. With as many open positions in major league baseball he should be a candidate if he’s interested. I respect managers who don’t take any crap. Gibbons was like that in Toronto. So is Hurdle.

      Reply
    • the voice inside my head

Actually, I have thought since his firing in Pittsburgh was made official, that Hurdle would be a very good option for the Padres — not necessarily the best, but a very good option nevertheless. He is fiery when he has to be, but relates very well to his players. The only blemish I would point out is how he lost the locker room mid-season.

I think anyone that has seen his body of work as manager can agree that Brad Ausmus is not someone that is going to get the Padres to the postseason — let alone, have any success once there.

After a torturous four years of the Andy Green experience, I’m in agreement that the Padres need someone with proven postseason success. Of the names mentioned, there are the obvious (if perhaps unattainable) ones: Joe Maddon, Joe Girardi, Buck Schowalter.

Then there are some intriguing names floating around out there that we would tend to dismiss on the surface, but maybe are the right person at the right time for this young and upcoming Padres team: Ron Washington, Clint Hurdle, Mark Loretta, Fredi Gonzalez.

Of this latter group and knowing what each brings to the table, which of them is the best fist for a minimum 3-4 year run as the new Padres skipper? I know a lot of people like Ron Washington, but is Fredi Gonzalez a viable option — especially given the number of young Latino players either on the 40-man roster or making their way up through the farm now?
