Reds Will Not Retain Hitting Coach Turner Ward

By Jeff Todd | October 1, 2019 at 10:58am CDT

Hitting coach Turner Ward will not return to the Reds for the 2020 season, the club announced today. He had been hired last fall as part of a revamped coaching staff under first-year manager David Bell.

Ward came to Cincinnati after previously serving as the Dodgers’ hitting coach. President of baseball operations Dick Williams thanked Ward in a statement but explained that, “as we reflected on this season, it became clear that we lacked the alignment we were seeking with our offensive approach.”

It seems the organization will return the remainder of Bell’s staff, though the announcement did not make that explicit. The Reds will now set out to find a new hitting voice to replace Ward.

More like Puig was only there because of Ward.

Puig had no choice. It was a happy accident for him that he got traded to the same team that Ward went to.

It was no accident, happy or otherwise. Once Ward left for Cincinnati, everybody in LA knew where Puig was going.

I’d like to see an all-Bell staff to be honest. If we’re going to be “all inclusive”, let’s not discriminate against Bells!

    David Bell (manager)
    Jay Bell (hitting coach)
    George Bell (1B)
    Rob Bell (pitching)
    Mike Bell (3B)
    Heath Bell (bullpen)
    Derek Bell (OF instructor)
Albert Bell(e)… hmmmm, let’s put him in charge of security.

That name surely rings a bell…..and walk-up music could be recordings of the 1970’s group known as The Bells.

They went backwards badly. Good FO move. Changing Senzel’s approach/stance mid-season was all sorts of stupid.

That’s a shame. Turner Ward’s always been the type of guy who will run through a wall for you… literally, at least back when he was a Pirates outfielder.

Their offense kept them in the positive of the rs/ra splits for majority of the season.
So in theory he wasn’t a negative. If anything it sounds like an issue with the pitching coach. Or lack of quantity relief options.

But what do I know… 701 runs scored and 711 runs allowed.

I hope you are kidding when you say the offense kept them in the positive the majority of the season. It was clearly the product of their pitching. Their were only 5 teams in baseball who allowed fewer runs than the Reds: Dodgers, Astros, Rays, Indians, A’s. On the reverse side there were only 6 teams who scored LESS runs than the Reds: Tigers, Marlins, Giants, Padres, Royals, and White Sox. Their offense was abysmal. Other than Geno, every other position player on the field ranked near the bottom of MLB in offensive production at their respective spots.

I dont follow the Reds very closely. But I’d say I’m familiar with their roster.
        So… who is this “Geno”??

Eugenio Suárez is often referred to as “Geno” by coaches and teammates as a nickname of sorts.

Lack of quality relief options I’d give you, but their pitching coach is frankly a frickin miracle worker. Just look at Sonny Gray, Robert Stephenson, etc.

Really, the relief options are good, too. But they were overworked because the offense couldn’t put enough games out of reach.
