The Padres announced that they’ve designated right-hander Pedro Avila for assignment. His exit will make room for the signing of left-hander Drew Pomeranz, whose deal is now official.
The 22-year-old Avila made his major league debut in 2019, throwing 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a start against the Diamondbacks in April, but that’s his only MLB appearance to date. He also combined for just 24 innings among three minor league levels this past season, and saw his year come to an early end in late August when he underwent Tommy John surgery. As a result, Avila won’t factor in much (if at all) in the majors or minors next season.
Prior to his surgery, Avila was considered a promising prospect for the Padres, as FanGraphs ranked him 28th in a loaded San Diego farm system back in May. But Avila’s pro experience has largely been limited to High-A ball, where he has put up a 4.45 ERA with 10.1 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 174 innings.

Wasn’t he a top 100 prospect for just on the cusp?
lowtalker1
Nah
He was a random grab from the nats .org for Derrick Norris
bbatardo
Avila looked like he had potential, but injury cost him. Would have been ironic if Andersom Espinoza was the 1 designated.
DarkSide830
shouldve been really. he would have cleared.
herecomethephillies2018
Avila will clear too because of the TJS

Now Padres need MadBum at 6/120 and/or Porcello at 5/60 in order to call this offseason a victory.
thebighurt619
No they dont….
They need to move myers by attaching prospects. Get strasburg or settle for a cheaper arm like roark, add a 2B and then call it an off season.

Wil Meyers & prospect for David Price. Problem solved!
Joe Kerr
No way Porcello gets 5 years and highly doubt Madbum gets 6

But SD will overpay today just to prove a point.

They need a ton of things

Those two are NOT getting THAT…..

Rick Porcello just called. He wants to know your name, who you represent, and your current therapeutic facility. He said this while screaming “LORDY!!!YES!YES!YES!”

Avila is a lock to be claimed
csspackler
Just the opposite. He had TJ surgery in September.
fred-3
It’s a 40 man roster spot… a bad team can claim him as a lottery ticket, essentially paying for his rehab
thebighurt619
Orioles or royals will claim for sure
amk3510
Yeah but a team just has to stash him on the 40 until March.
jbigz12
I’d be surprised if he wasn’t claimed. I was surprised no one claimed Nix though. This is the issue when you have that many prospects. (If there is one) Guys like Avila get a legitimate look before they get sent packing in most organizations. Such is life when you have a million prospects. Odds are the Padres will miss out on a late bloomer or two because of it.
stubby66
Brewers have room claim him and then put him on 60 day IL as soon as possible I believe you can at the winter meetings.

Not until the first official activity in spring training in February.
DarkSide830
id think you might be surprised. lot of good names have gone unclaimed in recent months, and Alvia’a numbers really weren’t all that great in the Minors.
rizdakc99
Cool. Guess Pomeranz passed both physicals for their medical records.

So the Padres won the Pomeranz-Espinoza trade then?

Ha

Pomeranz is a risky signing if you ask me. He stunk it up for SF for most of last season, then he had a great 2 month stretch for MIL out of the bullpen. Looking at his last 3 years of work, there’s a good chance he will regress at some point in time while in SD. While he did change from SP to RP, once batters get to see him 3 or 4 times (especially division rivals), they will figure him out and his walk rate and hard hit rate will go up. There’s no way he will be able to replicate what he did in his short stint in MIL over and entire season, let alone for 3 straight seasons. He has a history of arm trouble as well.
While I’m a Red Sox fan, I really enjoy the Padres team and truly hope he does well, but I have a feeling that the market way over-valued this guy and I hope he doesn’t return to his old, disinterested ways. Fingers crossed he can continue to be somewhat lights out in a relief role, just don’t expect the second coming of Kirby Yates; you’ll probably be disappointed.

The Padres announced yesterday they’ve signed Avila to a minor league contract.
