Sergio Romo Close To Deciding On Next Team

By Jeff Todd | December 6, 2019 at 10:17pm CDT

10:17pm: The Athletics are one of the teams with interest in Romo, Jon Morosi of MLB Network tweets. Romo could return to the Bay Area, where he spent the first several years of his career as a member of the Giants. He won three championships in San Francisco.

8:27pm: Veteran reliever Sergio Romo appears to be cruising towards his next deal. Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter) says there’s momentum towards an agreement, with a decision anticipated during the Winter Meetings.

What’s not yet clear is where the 36-year-old hurler is headed. The California native has been all over the map in the past few campaigns, most recently thriving with the Twins late in 2019.

There are still three teams engaged on Romo, according to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN (Twitter link). Notably, that trio of leading contenders for his services — all unknown, at present — does not include the Minnesota organization. The Twins have maintained interest, per Wolfson, but not (at least to this point) to the same “level” as the other clubs involved.

Is that really the case? I doubt he’d be looking to return and also doubt Oakland having the financial might to re-sign him with multiple suitors.

What about Liam hendriks, I think JB Wendelken is a breakout candidate too.

Worst stop of his career was with the Dodgers. He probably had lots of family coming to games too.
Still, Romo has the no dot slider. It just works.

Red Sox. Fits their very limited budget and has a history with Bloom.

The only important thing is that he stays active. The guy’s a piece of work, and defines the phrase “a joy to watch”. And hey, there are worse relievers out there.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the Mets. Good, veteran RP with closing experience and won’t break the bank.

Don’t want him back as a Giant. He had many great years but near the end of 2016 reg season and in the post season I remember him giving up key runs which was not the earlier Romo. He wasn’t as bad as Casilla that year (didn’t the latter have the most blown saves?). Romo’s ERA that regular season was decent.

Twins, A’s, Rays, Giants or Red Sox as Chaim Bloom loves this guy and they have 4-6 open spots on their 40 man roster right now.

It could be almost any team in baseball. Romo remains pretty good and his stuff still plays up big as a set-up guy. I’ve always suspected he would end up in DC at some point.

The question is whether he still wants to close or not … if so he probably won’t be signing with a contender … if not I really could see the A’s or Padres

At this point in his career, I really don’t see any team bringing him on as a primary closer. That said, he’s a solid setup guy and I can see him getting a 2yr/$8 mil deal.

I’ve been saying for a long time, Romo would be a great fit in Boston. He’s a proven winner who’s high ground ball rate would fit great at Fenway and he has success and experience in both a set up and closer role While not being overly expensive

Hope he goes to Oakland. Already kind of felt like he’s played there, although facts say otherwise!
