Latest On Mets’ Managerial Search

By Connor Byrne | January 20, 2020 at 10:21pm CDT

Longtime major league managers Buck Showalter, Dusty Baker and John Gibbons have been mentioned as speculative fits for the Mets since Carlos Beltran stepped down last week. However, as of now, none of them are candidates to take over in New York, Jon Heyman of MLB Network suggests. Something would have to “drastically” change for any of the three to emerge as a possibility for the Mets’ job, according to Heyman.

To this point, almost no known Beltran successors have come to the fore since he left the organization Thursday as a result of the Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing fiasco. The lone reported name is Mets quality control coach Luis Rojas, whom they almost hired before making the ill-fated decision to tab Beltran back in the fall.

Now, it seems Mets bigwigs aren’t fully sure how to proceed in the wake of Beltran’s sudden exit. There’s “some level of paralysis” from their front office on where to turn, according to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, who notes an eventual ownership change is part of the issue.

While minority owner Steve Cohen won’t grab the reins from Fred Wilpon and Jeff Wilpon as the Mets’ control person until 2025, his eventual takeover has slowed down the club as it seeks its next skipper. GM Brodie Van Wagenen & Co. fear they’ll “look bad to Cohen” if they hire a manager whom they didn’t consider in their previous search, Puma writes. So, with that in mind, it appears Rojas is the front-runner to land the position after coming up short in his bid for it just a couple months ago.

The New York Mets are in a terrible spot primarily due to the incompetence of Brodie VanWagenen.

How the hell are they in a terrible spot?? Top 10 roster in the sport with a bunch of young players under contract for a long time???And even tho the farm isn’t good they have young prospects like Alvarez Gimenez Mauricio and Allen Who will be top 100 prospects soon. Typical Mets hater following the boring narrative

While you are correct, keep in mind that NY media will crap on any sports team that isn’t proving its dominance right this second. Add to the fact that most ppl are muppets who need the media to tell them what all their opinions should be, and it’ll make sense why he and others think that way.

That said. As a Mets fan I think this group of players is really promising and can’t wait to see what they do this year. Also I think letting Wheeler walk was Brodie’s most underrated move of the offseason. Take away his 2018 stats and the guy is an average pitcher at best…decent ERA w/ high WHIP, low innings counts, prone to injury. I see lots potential in Wheeler to be an extremely overpaid scrub, seeing as Phils paid top shelf price for a present in the stall of a discount store. Kudos to Brodie for running from the bad smell.

Well, we are surrounded by entitled jerks who have been harassing us for all our lives and calling us chumps for rooting for the underdog and not their beloved evil empire, tabloid columnists who are desperately trying to goad teams and players so they can have their Dick Young-Tom Seaver moment, and sportsradio hosts who need to be as loud and stupid as their callers. Aside from that, it’s great being a Mets fan in New York.

I agree that Wheeler was extremely overpaid. That doesn’t mean he won’t kill the Mets every time he pitches against them.

In regard to Wheeler, he is a roll of the dice for sure, but was arguably the Mets #2 the past two years. And don’t discount what he did in that Philadelphia stadium. He pitched really well there. The Phillies badly needed him and they paid for him. Facing him will be no walk in the park. That will be quite the marquee when he lines up against Syndergaard. Advantage Wheeler.

The Mets do have a top 10 roster. It’s so sad how people don’t see that.. they won 86 games in the toughest division in baseball. With the worst bullpen they could have possibly had… and the two teams who finished with a better roster lost elite hitters they won’t be able to replace… don’t tell me the two AL wildcard teams and the Indians and twins are better than the Mets… the Phillies who finished 4th might have won the AL central with 100 wins… that’s how bad the AL was other than a few elite teams..

Eh, I think they’re fine, and this all goes away once they make the hire. They weren’t involved in the sign stealing, they merely hired a guy who was, and is already out of the organization.

They do need to make a decision sooner than later, but if hardly call where they are right now a “terrible spot.”

Sign Showalter and block teams from interviewing Meulens. Spring training starts in less than a month. Sorry Red Sox you can’t have him. That’s our bench coach, we just hired him. Your manager was a schemer and got caught boo hoo.

You cannot block a bench coach from interviewing for a promotion normally. This close to spring training may be different.

As I understand it, teams do need permission to talk to coaches from other teams. Usually there is no problem with getting permission but this close to spring training teams aren’t as likely to do so. The Cubs did give permission for one of their coaches, though I forget his name.

Why can’t met fans be happy that last years team improved 9 games over 2018.
Provided a tremendous amount of excitement during the second half run.
Are set up to make a good run this year.
With all of the angst directed at BVW, what if Diaz at age 25 pitches closer to the 2018 version, Lawrie stays healthy and performs like 2018, Familia.at age 30 performs like he did in 2018 ?

Agree that getting 80% of Diaz’, Cespedes’, McNeil and Alonso (expecting a typical sophomore slump), a healthy Conforto, 600 at bats from Davis at 3b (an offensive upgrade from Frazier), continued and consistent play from Rosario and the lineup is solid. The weak link is obviously Cano and his slowing bat and needing a solid #2 catcher. Starting pitching may be as deep as any team in baseball and the bullpen just needs to meet career averages.

If they can stabilize the drama, they should compete for the East title. At least this Mets fan hopes so!

Best thing to do would be to short-circuit this whole thing right now and promote from in-house. Either give the job to Bam Bam Meulens or Luis Rojas, then give Terry Collins the job of whomever is promoted, at least on an interim basis.

I would promote Meulens and then see what former manager would do the Mets a solid and act as bench coach for Bam Bam’s first year or two.

Collins may bring too much freight of his own, but maybe Mazzilli or even Willie Randolph could return and contribute in that bench coach role?

Would the mets trade diaz, for say…carlos martinez? Cards need to shed a little payroll, get a bounce back candidate. You guys get a guy who can start or close? Maybe some other pieces thrown in there too to make it a larger trade.

Not terrible in theory, though that 2019 season Diaz had is so far off his career average that STL would be unlikely to do anything close to a one-for-one trade.

just announce Luis Rojas. BVW will end up being the worst GM in history. IDC if the mets won 86 games last year. Hes trash and needs to be taken to the dumpster sooner rather than later. Hes helping his boys more than anyone else. Garbage GM.

Can’t understand why ownership would fault front office for going with a Showalter or Gibbons who can handle the difficult job of handling the media and setting up a spring training schedule with a matter of weeks before it starts. Totally different scenario now from when they hired Beltran.

If they are this lost in their decision to hire a new manager, then they should have just stuck by Beltran. Make him go public with a contrite apology for one press conference and move on. Sounds like the job is Rojas’ to lose.

Hire either Meulens, McEwing, Rojas, Gibbons or Showalter. Forget Dusty as he does not like pitchers, and the NY Mets are built around pitching. He also has a problem with young players which the Mets have many young players so Baker should be a definite no go for Brodie Van Numbskull.

“We’ll look bad to Cohen!” is literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Good to know they’re all worried about their jobs (which they may not even have in 2025), rather than the best interests of the Mets. Christ.

Give Meulens or the AAA manager a shot, I forget his name, but believe he is their new 1st base coach. Whichever of the two are not managing, none the other as bench coach. At this point, unless they bring in a grizzly vet, an outsider is just going to be banging his head against the wall so someone already on payroll should should get the opportunity. Honestly, I would prefer that their longtime minor league manager the chance because all these young kids come through his teams already. Tony Defrancesco? Is that his name?

I wanted Perez initially over Beltran. I get why why Rojas is the logical choice as of today. I just wish I saw more hype about pursuing Perez. I’m willing to be overruled but should the Mets not being be making a more aggressive approach on him?
