Twins Designate Ryne Harper

By Jeff Todd | January 24, 2020 at 4:59pm CDT

The Twins have designated right-hander Ryne Harper for assignment, the club informed reporters including Dan Hayes of The Athletic (Twitter link). His roster spot was needed for the addition of Josh Donaldson.

It’s a tough result for the 30-year-old Harper, who had a solid showing in his long-awaited MLB debut campaign. He worked to a 3.81 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 1.7 BB/9 over 54 1/3 innings.

Teams interested in cheap and steady innings will surely take a hard look at Harper. He doesn’t throw hard and generates bottom-of-the-barrel fastball spin. But his command-driven, slider-heavy approach still permitted an 11.6% swinging-strike rate and a palatable 1.16 HR/9.

I’m seeing another big spending Theo signing here. When rosters expand to 40 in September, the Cubs will be set!

Rosters only expand to 28 players now in September I think.

True but you know teams are still able to bring others up and send people down so once teams figure out the rotation of doing that they will still be able to maximize their 40 man roster

Zaidi as well. That guy turns over # 38-40 on the 40 man like crazy. On and of the 28 man will probably be more of the same for #27 and 28.

He has a curve heavy approach. That offspeed pitch he throws half the time is definitely a curve.

I wonder why the Twins didn’t trade him, surely he could’ve brought back a lottery ticket of some sort. Regardless, the Phillies could definitely use another bullpen arm.

      They will trade him.

By designating him, they have a week to trade him.

This makes no sense. Hill is on the DL and Pineda is suspended. They cut Harper so he had a chance to get invited to ST on another team.

      They didn’t “cut” him.

      They DFAd him.

What does a reliever have to so with their starting rotation? The Twins have a top 10 bullpen and Harper probably doesn’t see the majors at all this season if he stayed with the twins. Also they didn’t cut him, they DFA’d him so they can still trade him and if nobody claims him they get to keep him because I dont think he has the service time and I dont think he’s been DFA’d before.

They have a lot better options. Don’t be fooled by the overall numbers, he was strong early but later in the season he started getting shelled and they lost trust in him.

Stats were inflated by low leverage work. His WPA was one of the worst in twins bullpen.
