The Dodgers outrighted first baseman Tyler White, MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick reports on Twitter. He cleared waivers after recently being designated for assignment.
White is slated to participate in MLB camp as a non-roster player. He’ll still have a shot at an Opening Day job, but that’ll likely only come to fruition if there’s an injury or unforeseen development involving a player ahead of him on the depth chart.
The Dodgers obviously still think there’s some potential in the bat of the 29-year-old, as they carried him for a long stretch on the 40-man. But he’s far from a sure thing after a rough 2019 showing.
White, who is out of options, had a mammoth 2018 season at both the MLB (143 wRC+) and Triple-A (166 wRC+) levels. But he limped to a .208/.308/.304 batting line in 279 plate appearances last year.

was Tyler White part of the 2017 Astros? If so, that ought to be interesting.
Goku the Knowledgable One
That’s exactly the trail I’m sniffing too..
BobSacamano
Let’s be honest, you already know the answer. You’re just instigating. And the thing is, it’s not interesting.
saavedra
Didnt knew the answer, just knew he was a PotM card in the show 18 for the Astros, i was too lazy to check his bio.
Rudy Zolteck
He broke out in 2018 but his weight problem got away from him (I keep hearing thyroid? I wouldn’t doubt it) and his production likewise tanked. Back in the day he would actually play middle infield at the minor league level. Doubt he ever gets used for that again though haha
BKS1110
Yes, he was. And he used it frequently during the 2017 season when he was up. Don’t hear a lot of anger from Dodgers fans and players now though.
BlueSkies_LA
About what, exactly?
Goku the Knowledgable One
This guys #s in 2017 and 18 stick out like a sore thumb
danielking
No they don’t. He slayed thru the minors his entire career. He slayed in Spring Training in 2016 and won the Opening Day 2016 1B job… but he struggled… as a rookie. That’s normal.
He also didn’t come up in 2018 until mid-June, which is after the MLB report says the scheme ended.
His MLB numbers are correlated to his waistline. He’s had massive weight sways since his debut. He showed up carrying 19 sacks of potatoes under his shirt in 2019. He can hit… but he can only cover one plate with success — home or the buffet.
Rudy Zolteck
To believe, he actually could play middle IF in the minors. Just… wow
DarkSide830
do we have to connect anything to cheating? soon it’ll be the reverse Machado effect – dont sign that guy because his cousin was with THAT team.
fred-3
No one took him because his best year was 2017, which was likely aided by the Astros cheating
Mo Vaughn
Actually is best year was 2018
Rudy Zolteck
Man this guy just completely whiffed lol
Derekb69
Not true!
cleve1969
Tyler White played only 22 games for the Astros in 2017 but this release has nothing to do with his abilities and everything about him being an Astro that year … it will probably be hard for any Astro player of 2017 to be picked up by any MLB Team.
Goku the Knowledgable One
He wasn’t released. He was reassigned to AAA after the Dodgers decided to keep him.
And he played all of 2018 with the astros as well before falling apart in 2019 when the cheating was apparently halted.
jdgoat
Lol no. If you can help win babes all games, teams will pick you up. If aroldis Chapman and Roberto Osuna can get jobs, these guys will as well.
Cam
He wasn’t released. If you bothered to read the article, you’d know that.
But don’t let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy, right?
Rudy Zolteck
Maybin picked up, Maldonado taken off the 18 team, Cole and Chirinos off this team after “buzzergate,” Keuchel off the 17-18 team, Giles taken by Toronto, so was Derek Fisher (who did play in the WS technically and is a dirty cheater by your standards), we could go on and on. The Dodgers just took Mookie Betts from the cheating evil Sox teams. White crushed it throughout the minors but dropped the ball in 2019 because of his weight. Not much to it.

Jenny Craig candidate.
theroyal19
He’s actually lost quite a bit of weight. Dodgers doctors have actively treated his thyroid condition which the Astros neglected to do. There was stuff online about it back in November

I see a KBO/NPB foreign player roster spot in Tyler White’s future. Remember Darin Ruf?
agentx
Farhan Zaidi remembers. I’m curious to see if Ruf has learned anything and can both make the Giants and contribute from off their bench this season.
BobbyDynamite
I’ve been thinking that too. I bet he could go to Korea or Japan and rake.
For a guy who wasn’t picked till the 30th (maybe 32nd?) round, he has already seen a lot more of The Show than anyone would have expected. I always liked him as an underdog type of player.
LetThereBeLux
The guy had a medical issue causing him to gain weight. You guys are ruthless. See how you feel when your thyroid stops working. But he is a cheater. I’ve had enough if the “oh well you wouldn’t have said anything either” dialogue. Yea I would have. Just because Justin Verlanders two faced supposed leadership didnt resist when the flames got hot isnt a testament to how hard it is to stand up in the face of pressure but rather a statement on the lack of true leadership in the astros locker room and asrros organization in general.
Also remember how easy it were as to hate the Astros before all the cheating stuff came out? Gurriels racism? The assistant gms sexism and the toxic astros culture in general? How they fired all their scouts? The astros were hated before this
BlueSkies_LA
I’d never heard that White was hypothyroid, but this is a very common and easily treatable problem. I can’t imagine why it was allowed to go undetected and untreated in his case.

Whoa, like a different person! Still wondering how a hypothyroid condition could have gone untreated. A daily thyroxine supplement is the complete treatment.
