Before signing a minor league deal with the Giants, Yolmer Sanchez turned down some MLB contract offers from other teams, the second baseman told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. His decision was partly for financial reasons — the other offers promised him guaranteed money but less than the $2.5MM Sanchez will make if he cracks the Giants’ roster — and partly for opportunity-based reasons, as other clubs wanted to use Sanchez in a utility role. As Schulman writes, Sanchez preferred to “bet on himself…for a chance to be an everyday second baseman” in San Francisco.
It remains to be seen if Sanchez can become a regular amidst the Giants’ youth movement, or against a veteran like second base candidate Wilmer Flores, who did sign a guaranteed Major League deal with the team. Aside from Flores, the Giants also have youngster Mauricio Dubon and utilityman Donovan Solano in the mix at the keystone, not to mention Kean Wong, Zach Green, and longtime Giants staple Pablo Sandoval in camp battling for infield jobs.
More from the NL West…
- Robbie Ray has been a fixture in trade rumors for the better part of a year, and the Diamondbacks southpaw told MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert that “I thought I was as good as gone” heading into last summer’s trade deadline. “We were in it, but we were far enough behind where it looked like it was a real possibility that I was going to go somewhere. I was hearing it every single day,” Ray said. As it happened, the D’Backs instead unloaded an even bigger arm (and a bigger contract) by dealing Zack Greinke to the Astros, though Ray still felt he was a trade candidate during “the first part of the offseason…and then we made the moves that we made.” Acquiring Madison Bumgarner, Starling Marte, Kole Calhoun has now made the D’Backs into a popular choice to reach the postseason, leaving Ray now comfortable that he will remain in Arizona as long as the club is in contention. Ray is eligible for free agency after the 2020 season.
- Speaking of Bumgarner, the southpaw’s secret identity of rodeo team-roper “Mason Saunders” was publicly revealed today by Andrew Baggarly and Zach Buchanan of the Athletic (subscription required). Bumgarner’s participation in rodeo events has been something of an open secret for some time, though he has used the fake name to avoid extra publicity. Saun…er, Bumgarner competed in two events as recently as December, prior to signing his five-year, $85MM contract with the Diamondbacks. It isn’t known whether that agreement allows the left-hander to continue roping in organized events, as GM Mike Hazen said he was “not going to get into discussing specific contract language.”
- Injuries have limited Franchy Cordero to only 49 Major League games over the last two seasons, leaving the Padres uncertain but still hopeful about his vast potential, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes. Teammates remain impressed by Cordero, with no less than Fernando Tatis Jr. saying “if [Cordero] has a chance, he’s going to outplay me. He has more tools than me. He has way more power than me, and the speed is about the same level….If he stays healthy, he can be one of the best players in the game, simple as that.” Some glimpses of Cordero’s hitting ability have been exhibited over his 273 career plate appearances, as Cordero has ten homers and a .240/.306/.431 slash line as a big leaguer, and his ability to play all three outfield positions could be an advantage as he fights to win at least a bench job on San Diego’s roster.

That blurb on MadBum reads like a news article during a season of OOTP.

The Legend of Bum…
Strike Four
Tatis might want to chat with some scouts and evaluators before speaking out next time, because Franchy Cordero is in no way, shape or form, better than Tatis at any aspect of the game.
antibelt
So you wouldn’t try to play up one of your friends? It’s all about hype this time of year.
RunDMC
Being a wing-man doesn’t require lying to their face and give them a false self-impression. Maybe let a few pass under your legs in BP (something Tatis is known for) when Cordero is up.
DarkSide830
it’s amazing how much smoke there is. all these people saying that Cordero is great, then when he actually steps on a baseball field all those pundits suddenly shut up. Cordero is living proof that simply hard hit % and sprint speed dont always a great player make.
SuperPad619
Cordero hit a home run almost 500 feet. His power is significantly more than Tatis. And he’s right, they are about the same speed. Tatis is a better hitter but not by much. Cordero could be an all star if he could ever stay healthy.
Javia
Tatis is an infinitely superior hitter to Cordero, which is what allows all of his tools to play at the major league level. Cordero had 29.9 ft/sec avg Sprint speed in 2017, which is elite. He hit the longest HR in mlb in 2018 at 489ft, so he has premium power. He has a plus arm. He has huge raw talent. The problem is that he doesn’t hit enough to play regularly. He looks like he may have possibly improved that part of his game. If he can hit, he can be a monster. If not, he will not play.
SDHotDawg
He also needs to learn to catch a flyball. And make contact. And not strike out nearly 40% of the time.
99socalfrc
Cordero has never stayed healthy long enough to know if he is as good as some suspect. I can say unless you have SEEN him play you should reserve judgement. I never got it either, then I saw him play. He looks like He was born to play baseball. I’ll admit Im convinced he could outplay most in his sleep. He is so physically gifted he looks like he is inst even trying.
SuperPad619
Absolutely, Tatis is just saying that if he’s healthy and can put it together he can be a star. The chances of that happening are slim though with his injury history.
SDHotDawg
@99socalfrc … Were your eyes closed when he was on the field? Were you grabbing a beer? Because there’s no way you watched him play. I’ve seen the guy blow catches during BP!
nypadre66
Sounds like Ruben Rivera reduix. All the tools in the world couldn’t make him a major leaguer.
jrussell92024
It’s called leadership bro
DrDan75
Tatis is being gracious and probably trying to motivate Cordero as well.
That’s one of the things I admire about this kid. He’s humble. When Pete Alonzo won ROY, he couldn’t stop talking about what a great player he was.
jhomeslice
exactly. There is a huge psychological part to baseball, and life. Having someone like Tatis say those kinds of thing in support… trying to instill confidence in a guy, that kind of thing can have an impact. We could all use someone like that in our life. It’s called being a a great teammate (and friend).
jbigz12
Cordero has a whole 250 major league PA. I think if you’re drawing conclusions about him at this point—you’re a little bit of an idiot.
SDHotDawg
He can’t play defense. He has no instincts. He’s got a 40% K rate. The only “conclusion” is he’s not ready. If you think he is, then maybe you should redirect some of that idiocy onto yourself.
dematteo1982
Ive always liked Robbie Ray…
If he ever were to cut down on his free passes…he could be a really good #2….an ace on a team with weaker starting pitching.

Lol! Funny comment

speaking of the Giants, just realized Jamie Westbrook was with them. he’s posted good minors numbers recently, wonder if he’s in the race for a bench spot.

So, Franchy Cordero is a 2020 fantasy baseball sleeper…?

I guess the rodeo thing explains why Bumgarner wanted to sign with Arizona, huh?
lowtalker1
Two big problems with Cordero, healthy or not… dude doesn’t make enough contact and he doesn’t know how to play the outfield. He cost the padres two no hitters in 2018.
SDHotDawg
2 no-hitters in 7 days. One while playing CF, and one in LF. Worse, he acted like he didn’t give a damn, or worse, didn’t understand the game situation. In each case they were very catchable balls, but he got bad jumps and took bad routes – with no extra effort to make up for his initial mistakes.
TrumpCard
Cordero couldn’t tie Tatis shoes
hiflew
Why would he want to?
fox471 Dave
Once you learn to tie Tatis’ shoes, you are a superstar.

I know Sanchez wasn’t exactly all that great offensively last year. But it is surprising to see a guy win a gold glove and then wind up in camp on a minors deal the next year. Wish him the best as he’s obviously got some talent and seems like a hard worker… maybe he can make some adjustments and boost his offense a bit, couple that with his incredible defense and he could be a really valuable minor league pickup for the Giants!
scottn59c
The Giants really shanghaied Yolmer if they led him to believe he could be anything other than a utility infielder, especially after signing Wilmer Flores for the next two or three years.
Sucks to win a gold glove and then have to settle for a minors deal. Giants have tons of middle-infield guys in camp; I’ll bet you this guy ends up getting shafted. Should have taken whatever majors deal he could get.
claude raymond
He’ll get 450 plate appearances. At least. Flores will play mostly first. Posey won’t hardly get near first base.
SanDiegoTom
Brandon belt?
claude raymond
I wasn’t saying that he would be the regular first baseman. I was saying that Flores would mostly play first in response to the comment that Sanchez won’t play 2nd base cuz Flores will be ahead of him.
Belt will start against righties and Flores will start against lefties. He’ll be the platoon guy, not Sanchez. Sanchez is a magician at second.
claude raymond
Scott actually used the word “utility”, not platoon. I highly doubt that a gold glover would platoon.
claude raymond
Oops, I doubt a gold glover would be a utility player
Taximan
Sanchez will make team. Needs to improve at
Plate and his base running sucks has upside plays third too can improve and does have nice glove. Cut loose because of salary was going to get 6 million in arb
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Fun fact: Madison Bumgarner is also Al Roker, Slash and Chesley Sullenberger in his spare time.
CNichols
There’s some underlying truth to what Tatis is saying, the sprint speed and hard hit % are elite. If you looked at just Cordero’s run and power tools then yeah they’re right up there with Tatis.
His hit tool is not unfortunately, he doesn’t make enough contact and he doesn’t get on base at a high enough clip. He also has major defensive problems in the OF, probably because he’s a converted SS and hasn’t had as much development time there.
They really need him to be healthy this year so they can see what they have. If he misses a huge chunk of another year after 3 in a row I think Trammel will just pass him up and take that roster spot moving forward.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Hit tool is everything.
If you can’t put the bat on the ball, the other tools are just athletic skills that could help you in a sport that is not baseball.
SDHotDawg
There is no question Cordero has power and speed. Unfortunately, he is a serious liability in the field and strikes out nearly 40% of the time. He’s got a long way to go.
Oops. Just saw that lowtalker posted almost the same thing. Oh well.

Madison Bumgarner also flies dirigibles under the pseudonym Alfred von Klompenburg
MoRivera 1999
And, in keeping with his risk-taking bent, he leaps from said dirigibles with a rice paper parasail and a torch in his right hand. “Holding it with my left (pitching) hand,” he said, “wouldn’t be a challenge.”

The last big time athlete I can remember that had an alias was when Michael Vick went by Ron Mexico. Hope this one ends better than that one.

How about that guy that changed his real name to War Machine? Last I heard, he was well…

Win a gold glove and get a minor league deal, Why do we even have stats and awards for defense?
YankeesBleacherCreature
As you know, he’s a glove only guy now and was non-tendered. Teams haven’t found a pressing need for that type of player. Gold Gloves are awarded by his peers not by guys who sign the paychecks.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Mad Bum is a complete animal. The guy almost ruined his career with a dirt bike accident, so he decides to tone it down a bit by becoming a rodeo rope man. Can’t wait to read the reason behind his first IL stint of the year…core injury?
You’ve got to love the guy though. He’s a real life honey badger.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Some folks are more adventurous and risk-adversed. I can’t imagine AZ would be able to convince insurance to cover any rodeo-related injuries. If he gets hurt that’s on him (and his paychecks or lackthereof) and I’m sure it’s something he can live with.
Chisox378
Yolmer Sanchez is a good clubhouse influence, so the Giants should have him on the opening day roster even if he is a utility player.
PandaExpress
He is indeed. I’m mostly interested to see if his swing changes make a difference for him. He’s got good bat to ball skills, just needs more lift in his swing. If his ops was anywhere near league average he would be worth 3+WAR with that defense he puts out there. I’d take that production from a minor league signing!
Taximan
Got thrown out more than was successful at stealing bases. Think he also whiffs a lot carries a lot of gloves. All above average Will make team Maybe someone that benefits from a change He’s still young.
