Padres To Sign Brian Dozier To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | February 23, 2020 at 6:28pm CDT

6:28PM: Dozier will earn $2.2MM if he makes San Diego’s roster, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link), plus some extra money is available to Dozier via contract incentives.

10:38AM: The Padres have agreed to terms with second baseman Brian Dozier and invited him to MLB spring training, report AJ Cassavell of MLB.com (via Twitter) and Robert Murray (Twitter link). It’ll be a minor-league deal, Murray adds (via Twitter). Dozier is a client of All Bases Covered Sports Management.

Dozier was once an elite performer for the Twins but has tailed off a bit in recent years. Over the last two seasons, he compiled a .225/.320/.408 line (94 wRC+) with 41 home runs in 1114 plate appearances with Minnesota, the Dodgers and the Nationals. That pales in comparison to the stellar .269/.349/.522 (129 wRC+) mark with 72 homers he posted over the two seasons prior.

At age 32, Dozier’s days as a masher are probably behind him. Even recently, though, he’s remained a generally productive player. Not only has he gotten regular playing time on contending clubs, he’s remained a solid hitter. Last season in Washington, Dozier hit .238/.340/.430 (99 wRC+). Defensive metrics are mixed on his work on second base. UZR thinks he’s a perfectly fine defender, while DRS and Statcast are more bearish.

As the slash line indicates, Dozier remains capable of hitting for power and drawing walks, making him a solid veteran bat near the bottom of a team’s order. He also makes a fair amount of contact, although his fly ball approach has perennially driven low batting averages on balls in play. The Statcast metrics also suggest Dozier’s something of a league average bat, as his .331 xwOBA last season ranked in the 49th percentile.

In many years, that would’ve been enough for Dozier to find a guaranteed MLB job, but the free agent market at second base was loaded with similar veterans. It’s still a bit surprising to see he’ll have to earn his way onto a 40-man roster in spring training, although there’s certainly room for him to do so with the Padres.

Jurickson Profar, Greg Garcia and Breyvic Valera are San Diego’s top three current options at second base. Padres’ GM A.J. Preller is surely fond of Profar, having signed him as an international free agent with the Rangers and acquired him from the A’s this offseason. Dozier arguably outplayed Profar last season, though, as the latter has never quite made good on his vaunted prospect status. Meanwhile, non-roster invitees Esteban Quiroz and Gordon Beckham figure to have a tougher shot at making the club.

There’s nothing to lose, meanwhile, from San Diego’s perspective. They’ll get a look at a more productive player than most minor-league signees who plays a position of uncertainty. Alternatively, they could consider Dozier as a right-handed bench bat, a profile which the 26-man active roster makes more capable of stashing on the roster. Dozier has a career .270/.354/.500 slash against left-handed pitching and has continued to hit southpaws well in recent seasons.

I think what Dynamite is saying is you pretty much never hear a white player called “poison.” Just curious. It kinda stands out for people paying attention. Seems like a perfectly reasonable observation, even if it was coarsely stated.

Pappelbon (sp?) comes to mind from recent history, Harper is probably in there somewhere as well. Wasn’t Jeff Kent considered a bit of a jerk and his character is brought up for the HoF? I’m not too sure with Machado, but Puigs antics are on par with Manny Ramirez. He seems to have cleaned up his act recently though.

          Actually they are both.
Hispanic is a person born of a Spanish speaking population.
Latino is a person born of a Latin American population.
All Latinos are Hispanic, but not all Hispanics are Latinos.
People from Spain are Hispanic but not Latino.

The main issue here though is who TF cares?

          6- See 4 & 5

Padres certaintly dont have surplus pitching to trade for Renigfo (who I like btw) –

FOR 2020 they are thin as is, certainly beyond they look amazing with Gore Patino Paddack at the top but please stay on topic here thats not whats being discussed-If you hade a guy like Stripling youd be holding him tight not trading him away

“Paddack need not apply” can either mean he is too good to trade or not good enough. Considering you had already stated that “San Diego had no pitching to trade”, it would seem that you are stating the latter, not the former. Perhaps if you can learn to properly elucidate your ideas, we can avoid this confusion.

San Diego has Quantrill, Lucchesi, Bolanos, Baez, Morejon and even possibly Davies and Lamet available for the right price. Any one of these pitchers would be of tremendous interest to the Angels. These are all trade able pitchers that the Padres have available when you say they have none. Is it possible that you may have been incorrect?

Nah it means its pretty obv Paddack is not being traded for a guy like Renigfo unless another guy like Adell is involved which was never the argument

San Diego is looking for pitching this year not trading it- You currently have Paddack and pray for rain ( in Sd albeit lol )-

How would Bolanos Baez Morejon help the Angels this year? You think they have enough depth to trade Quan and Lucchessi this year? Cmon now……….. This is a team currently contemplating sending out some big Sp guns just too offload Meyers you really think they are gonna double down more pitching prospects for Renigfo??? Ive seen your posts your better than this…..

At least we can agree Paddack Gore Patino is going to be awesome for the future- If they included Gore or Patino to get rid of Meyers they would be crazy

I am def concerned as a Dodger fan who would love 3 more consecutive pennants for 10 in a row- Padres could have something really really special there

Not sure why you are saying Padres bullpen is the best in baseball. Beyond Yates and a 36 year old Stammen there is really no one proven on that staff.

Their offseason additions are questionable with the exception of Pagan. Even he has some questions marks with the Padres being his 4th team in 4 years.

They do not compare with the Yankees, Braves, Athletics, Indians, or even the Astros.

What is Preller thinking? Is he going to send Tonya Harding out to a bunch of spring training camps to take out some second baseman so they’ll be forced to make a trade with the Padres?

I think Profar is now probably not feeling the love. He’s somebody that we gave up talent for, maybe not a lot of talent, but still…

I don’t like Preller anyway, but he is even more suspect now. Is he trying to burn the place down before he gets fired?

Profar was a dumb trade to begin with, one that started with Beane trying to flex on Preller, which dummy Preller fell for. Austin Allen > Jurickson Profar, the 2B (he’s actually a fine LF/1B option but for the love of baseball, needs to be kept away from the middle INF)

Austin Allen isn’t a catcher. He’s a 1B/DH type. He was suited for the AL.

Plus in today’s MLB, 1B/DH are a dime a dozen and have little value.

If flexing preller for Austin Allen is considered a get beane should step down lmao.

1 year of Profar vs nothing during the rule 5 draft.

Allen wouldn’t have survived the 40 man roster crunch coming up with San Diego needing to protect others.

          1. They could have traded Allen for something else.

Traded Austin Allen for what exactly? An ace? You’re assuming he had value; he didn’t have much value considering he’s stuck to 1B in the NL and can DH in the AL. Allen would be a defensively liability in the corner OF.

He didn’t have much value being limited to 1B/DH. Guarantee other offers were 16 17 year old lottery tickets who had no way of contributing for at least 3-4 years, if they ever do.

Oakland DHs him course he could outproduce Profar. Oakland can hide his horrible defense.

I’d love to hear what you think the Padres could have gotten for Austin Allen. Would especially love to hear which teams you think

          A. Would give up something of value for him
          B. Have a need for him.

“I’d love to hear what you think the Padres could have gotten for Austin Allen.”

You just answered your own question. Those 16-17 y/o lottery tickets have WAY more value than 1 year of Profar. LIke, the A’s probably would have non-tendered Profar if Preller hadn’t traded for him.

“Oakland DHs him course he could outproduce Profar. Oakland can hide his horrible defense.”

Then they should have had to give up more than Profar to get him. Heck, they even got Buddy Reed in the trade, who isn’t completely useless.

They wouldn’t have to get anything for Allen if Preller hadn’t signed Hosmer to that idiot contract.
Allen and Myers could be duking it out over first base in camp right now.

More often then not those 16 17 year olds don’t even sniff the majors. IFA bust rates are significantly higher. For every Fernando Tatis Jr there’s ruddy giron(#8 prospect 2015), adys portillo (#8 in 2013), Kelvin melean, eguy Rosario, javy guerra, Reinaldo Llarraza, and more. Gabriel arias and Luis almanzar could join this list of failed ss ifa signings Padres have had last 7 years. Profar, 16 year old who most likely doesn’t reach the majors, or rule 5?

Padres gave up a 1B/DH and a 4th of pinch runner they’d lose in rule 5 for 1 year of Profar. Neither Allen nor reed had value to other teams where the other team would be willing to trade anything worthwhile. Who knows if 16 17 year olds were even on the table in talks. Could of been Padres taking back a bad contract for those 2 like wade Davis or Bryan Shaw.

“More often then not those 16 17 year olds don’t even sniff the majors.”

Again. Those 16-17 y/o’s are more valuable than one year of Jurickson Profar at $5.7m.

“Gabriel arias and Luis almanzar could join this list of failed ss ifa signings Padres have had last 7 years.”

Almanzar is looking like a bust. Arias will be top 100 leaguewide at the midseason re-ranking.

“Padres gave up a 1B/DH and a 4th of pinch runner they’d lose in rule 5 for 1 year of Profar.”

They didn’t lose Reed in the Rule 5 draft. If you remember he was included as a PTBNL in the trade and was officially sent to the A’s after the Rule 5 draft took place and no one took him. That was the sole reason for him being included as a PTBNL, cuz the A’s were worried someone would take him.

“Could of been Padres taking back a bad contract for those 2 like wade Davis or Bryan Shaw.”

No, the Padres are not going to take back a bad contract just to get rid of Austin Allen or Buddy Reed. They weren’t even making league minimum yet. If they were really a problem they’d have been DFA’d/released.

… then again, Profar kinda falls into “bad contract” territory.

Not that Dozier is a lock to make the team, but Preller & Co. seem to be trying to change the clubhouse atmosphere. Bringing in Pham’s no non-sense approach and now Dozier, who seems like a really good teammate, the clubhouse dynamic should be a lot different than in years past. Hosmer was brought in partly/mostly for his leadership/experience, but it hasn’t seemed to have made as big a difference as expected.

Here’s hoping that between these 3 and all of the ex-Oriole coaches that have been brought in, Machado can revert back to his days when he was in Baltimore and put up some great seasons in San Diego.

It’s not a record for HRs hit by players in the 1 hole though, but HRs hit as the first batter of the game.

Anderson hit 50-some home runs that one year, but not all came in the first inning as the leadoff hitter.

PCL stat inflation and high flash-in-the-pan potential notwithstanding, I’d like to see what Ty France can contribute.

Safe to assume Dozier and the others are all ahead of France, or might the Padres take one 2B and one utility IF from the bunch?

    Reply
    • Herc33

I think this deal could really hurt France’s chances of making it onto the opening day roster. Greg Garcia did really well as a utility IF last year so he’ll most likely have a spot leaving just one more IF spot for Dozier/France/Cronenworth etc..

They probably only have room for one of those guys, unless they’re willing to carry only four OF because they want Profar to be their fifth OF. If they do that then there could be room for two of those guys, but before Spring Training they were saying Profar was only going to take reps at 2B this spring, so I think they want him to play there primarily.

How are his days as a masher behind him at age 32? That’s not a writing criticism, but that does seems to be the consensus. If he’s not hurt, why would a stud be unable to hit after the age of 30? (he’s not been great for the past two years.). Guys like Brian Dozier are certainly worth the risk (there’s no real downside to any minor league deal), he clearly knew how to hit and he’s not old enough yet for his bat speed or other tools to be in decline. He seems like a great reclamation project for a hitting coach, and Mr. Dozier should certainly be motivated. If he returned to his career average, he could be a difference-maker for San Diego, and play his way into 2-3 yr., $8-10m AAV deal – or completely out of the league if he flops

I think the Hosmer contract is a little overblown- Perhaps because it comes from a smaller market team-

Id take his contract over Pollocks or Mccutchens for example – He still is an asset ignoring the price unlike those 2 who are closer to liabilities in todays state – There is a ton of value in being able to pencil in 155 games started

Eric Hosmer was worth negative .3 fWAR in 2019 and and negative .1 fWAR in 2018. He is a below replacement level player making an AAV of $18M and he’s under contract for 6 more years. It has nothing to do with them being a smaller market team, the deal is just plain horrible. Him playing 155 games of below replacement level baseball actually doesn’t help them, Josh Naylor or Austin Allen, who was traded for Profar, would probably be just as good and they both only make league minimum as they’re pre-arb.

In a full season Cutch is a 2-3 fWAR player making similar money to Hosmer and his deal is only guaranteed through 2 more seasons because the 3rd year is a club option. Thats really not a bad deal, its about fair value.

Pollack is likewise an above replacement level player and there is only 4 more years on his deal as opposed to Hosmer’s 6. With injuries especially towards the end of his deal I think Pollack contract going to be underwater in terms of money for value, but I would trade Hosmer’s contract for either of those two deals you mentioned in a heartbeat.

Yeah going forward id still take Hosmer over both- I think the last inj is going to derail Cutch and Pollock is literally going to be a platoon player going forward……a 15 mill a yr platoon player!!!

Of cource hes overpaid I just think its overblown like the Ian desmond contract (theres a lot worse out there) that nobody mentions partly bc the players are more likeable like Miggy Cutch Pollock Price etc…

On the other side you have aged veterans, signed for almost as much, coming off major injuries or always inj and forced into the weak side of a platoon (Joc/Pollock) –

Sure hes overpaid, but its vastly overblown -If Im willing to overpay a guy its going to be a proven winner / great clubhouse guy in which Hosmer qualifies by all accounts – Hes 29 lets not act like hes cooked already as well

By comparison there are a ton of Dodger fans who would have resigned that Pollock deal today?

Do you not think the Friedman/Preller angle plays into this bias? Its easy to take shots at Sd,/Rockies (desmond), everyone feels safe but its def overblown

My honest opinion now in a possible Myers to Boston deal is for Christian Vazquez.

Padres can give Boston needed pitching depth and an exchange of Catchers for the salary relief of Myers.

Myers -1/2 of remaining money(3/30M), Hedges, Quantrill and Bednar for Christian Vazquez and a prospect.
