Who Signs First, Yasiel Puig Or Brock Holt?

By Mark Polishuk | February 2, 2020 at 10:45am CDT

After two winters of pretty stagnant free agent movement, it is somewhat remarkable that 48 of the players on MLBTR’s Top 50 Free Agents list have already found new teams by February 2.  We look back at all these signings and the nonstop array of misses in our — okay, my — set of picks in the free agent prediction contest, only two players remain available, both former All-Stars: the controversial Yasiel Puig (37th in our rankings) and longtime Red Sox utilityman Brock Holt (41st).

Jeff Todd examined Puig’s market earlier this week, listing a wide range of teams that could still be speculative fits for the outfielder.  The problem facing Puig, however, is that “speculation” is all we have to go on after an offseason that has been short on hard news about the former Dodger.  The Marlins and White Sox were both linked to Puig at various points, though those clubs seem to have already addressed their outfield needs, as Miami signed Corey Dickerson and Chicago acquired Nomar Mazara in a trade with the Rangers.  An argument could be made that Puig might still be a fit for the Sox as a platoon partner with Mazara, though the Pale Hose seem committed to seeing if Mazara can still blossom as an everyday player (and if necessary, another right-handed outfielder could potentially be found at a lower price tag than Puig).

The Tigers were our pick for Puig’s next team back in November, though GM Al Avila recently said that Puig was “not a priority” for the club, despite Detroit’s lack of outfield depth.  It could be a bit of gamesmanship on Avila’s part if there are some negotiations going on with Puig’s representatives, though it could also reflect a potential league-wide truth — Puig isn’t seen as a must-have option.  He might not receive many looks until we get deeper into Spring Training, and opportunities develop due to injuries, or teams becoming dissatisfied with their in-house outfield choices.

Puig hasn’t been his biggest ally due to some of his off-the-field antics, though that focus on his personality tends to obscure the fact that he is still only 29 years old, and still a productive player.  Even acknowledging that 2019 was a down year, Puig still batted .267/.327/.458 with 24 homers over 611 PA with the Reds and Indians, good for a league-average 100 OPS+ and 101 wRC+.  You have to figure that some team will eventually take the leap to sign Puig because of what he has demonstrated over his seven MLB seasons.

Holt is older (31) than Puig and seemingly has none of the baggage, as Holt was popular with both teammates and fans over seven years with the Red Sox.  Holt has been a classic jack-of-all-trades over his career, making at least nine starts at every position on the diamond except pitcher and catcher and filling in whenever a need has arisen.  For instance, Holt has primarily played second base over the last two years due to Dustin Pedroia’s ongoing knee problems.  Over 2295 plate appearances, Holt has also provided a solid average (.271) and on-base percentage (.340), even if his .374 slugging percentage doesn’t promise much pop.

Given the trend towards multi-positional players in today’s game, it is somewhat surprising that Holt is still looking for a new team.  With so many clubs seemingly trying to develop a young player into their own version of a super-utilityman like Holt, you’d think one team would have moved to sign the 1.0 version now that he has hit the open market.  Then again, the catch-22 of Holt’s versatility is that while it makes him a fit on virtually any team in baseball, it also (like Puig’s situation) doesn’t make him a “priority” of a signing.  As in, teams will turn to Holt to fill roster holes, but only after they see if their current utility candidates can pan out.

The Reds and Blue Jays have both shown interest in Holt this winter, and the Red Sox also had some talks about a reunion early in the offseason, though there hasn’t been any news on that front since Chaim Bloom was hired as Boston’s chief baseball officer.

We still have time before Spring Training opens, so it might yet be a while before either Puig or Holt put pen to paper on a new contract.  But which do you think will be the first to land with a team?

I’d say the Brockstar does and it’s not even close. I’d guess that he’s sitting on at least a few offers. While I don’t agree with it, some teams will be turned off by Puig even if they’re fits, which will destroy his market.

Red Sox really blew this one…they signed a far less versatile and skilled player as their primary utility player….when Holt could have been had for the same base with some incentives and an option… Honestly I an more upset losing Holt than Betts..because this was avoidable and the other is financially driven.

Fans in boston put up with manny’s antics because he was bashing 40 hrs, and, while he was goofy he wasn’t really cancerous or mean.

Puig has gross cringe worthy habits (the bat), doesn’t mash to that level, and is more cancerous with bad attitude (think manny at the end when fans weren’t sad to see him go.

I think best case scenario Puig should take a 1 year deal wherever he can find it. Drop the antics, and just push his abilities trying to be more business and less about acting out for attention. Do that and maybe next year there’s a longer term deal. It’s “show me” time.

Holt fits on just about every team. There’s times I wonder if he envisions himself as a slightly cheaper zobrist, problem is, I don’t think deals like the kind Chicago offered those years back are really out there for the super utility type anymore. I’m sure he has offers, but obviously he is waiting for… something. A longer term? Having given an internal deadline to boston because he doesn’t want to leave and is waiting to see if payroll frees? Who knows.

I think any offers to holt don’t have a time limit though. He makes about any team better, and, he’s a better 26th man than what just about anyone has. He’s not out for a starting position so I think teams are fine letting him take as long as he wants before ST.

No, it’s more like, “putting white and non-white players under the same microscope” kind of thing. White players like Bryce Harper, Brian McCann and Alex Bregman are allowed to be “fiery” and “gamers” but Puig is a “flat out psychopath” for doing the exact same things those guys are praised for. Got it?

Do those guys start or escalate fights? Do they reject coaching? Are they lazy and only decide to try when it’s a contract year? There are lots of non-whites that play hard and hustle and are fiery, and you never hear anyone complain about them. It’s not about Race, it’s about Puig.

He was quick to the gun with using racism towards the guy but calling Puig a psychopath is going way over the top. You guys act like he’s beating women on the side, fighting with fans in the stands or doing something that can get you arrested. Puig is guilty of being very enthusiastic and emotional. Characterizing Puig as a psycho makes a sound minded person wonder why such an over-the-top characterization comes from?

Ortiz was a huge clubhouse presence. Ortiz didn’t bashed phone every month, or caused huge problems in the clubhouse.

Puig’s biggest sin, which really bothered his Dodgers teammates, was being out of position in the outfield, even when he was told to shape up on this. Being out of position, means pop up turned into singles or doubles.

A good way for a player to be traded, no matter if his bat is essential, is getting into unnecessary fights, as Puig would do, like with catcher Nick Hundley in 2018. His teammates don’t like to pull him out of a scrum, when he just goes off like this..

If Puig had a little more self control, got his fielding better, he would have a multi year contract. Right now, low revenue teams may give him a one year contract, to see if he behaves, but it is a big sign that no one wants to take a chance on Puig..

I think it simply comes down to versatility & cost. The player that wins that, will be signed first.

I’m not sure how you figure it’s a race issue. But, you keep doing you.

It probably has way more to do with him instigating things with other teams constantly, somehow causing an entire club house to dislike him, causing a former team member to describe him as “the worst person I’ve ever seen in this game ever” than with him being Cuban. I know, crazy right?

Fact: Brock is the only one. Another fact: Brock Holt is the only player in MLB history to hit for the cycle in a post-season game. Any MLB team would be better with Brock on their 26 man roster.

Which is funny since he carries a 122 career OPS+. Betts’s is 134. Those are 12 big points but 122 is still nothing to sneeze at. Puig’s 100 in 2019 still looks like the outlier until and unless he has another average year.

.800 OPS is better than league average, there are so many worse options than Puig even if he’s not hitting homers. There’s still a 5 tool guy in there. Puig with a .300 BA and .380 OPS is a new side we haven’t seen in a while. He could have a second breakout for sure. He should be the Indians everyday RF in 2020.

Puig hasn’t had a .300 BA since his rookie year, and hasn’t had an OBP over .346 since 2014. They’ve mostly been in the .320’s. There’s not much likelihood that he’ll reach those levels you mentioned in 2020. His bWAR and his defense have gotten progressively worse in the last four seasons, according to Baseball-Reference..

        @PolishHammer

I wouldn’t avoid Puig for his on-field antics or perceptions that he is a clubhouse problem (most evidence indicates he’s not).

No, the problem I have is that the Cleveland Indians gave Puig a golden opportunity to prove himself worthy of a free agent bonanza, by giving him a prominent role for a team grasping for a playoff spot. He was installed full time in RF and placed in the clean-up spot in the lineup. The playoffs were right there for the taking, and Puig could have demonstrated leadership on and off the field.

So what did he do? Hit 2 homers (TWO!) in 220 plate appearances down the stretch when we needed him the most.

He proved to be a muscle bound singles hitter who loved to show off his arm in right field whether it was necessary or not.

It was a disappointing performance when it counted; don’t think that hasn’t had some effect on his offers this winter. Trouble is, it never affected Puig’s opinion of himself as the straw that stirs the drink.

The LA Times had some articles about Puig after he was traded to the Reds. It was not praising of Puig. Puig was always late to practice, he refused to be coached, especially about learning where to position himself for each batter. He was not a popular in the clubhouse. Some of his off field problems also became a main issue..

Puig might be contemplating a move to WWE nxt. There all the added drama will play to his strengths. He’s probably like me in some respects in that he’ll mature late and have a few regrets. He’s def a polorising figure.

Which teams have a need for Puig at this stage of the offseason? I’d think he’d only be interested in a contender at this point, although he did say he’d like to play in Miami (likely for the nightlife, and no way Don Mattingly would ever accept Puig on his roster), but that ain’t gonna happen.

Cubs and Indians could use him but won’t spend money. He wasn’t a fit in Cinci. He’s not a fit in Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Atlanta or Washington, so that rules out most of the NL. Boston, the Yankees and Minnesota have no place to play him. So what’s that really leave?

Tampa? White Sox? Angels? Padres? Arizona maybe? The rest of the league is full of teams that are either set, wouldn’t be fits or aren’t contenders, and I’m not sure any of the four teams left that have a potential need would want to introduce a clubhouse cancer like Puig. Especailly San Diego. Puig and Machado in the same clubhouse would destroy that team.

Puig’s above average. He had an average year in 2019 but his career OPS+ is 122, well above average. In 2017 and 2018 they were 119 and 120. For comparison, Betts’s career OPS+ is 134. Not saying he’s a Betts, just saying he’s not average, at least not until/unless he has another average season.

The only reason I can see for Puig not having a contract is his behavior.

Holt’s 103 wRC+ means he created 3% more runs than average in his number of plate appearances (not than players with Puig’s plate appearances). Puig created 1% more than average in his number of plate appearances. Holt still did better proportionally but not overall in absolute number of runs created. He did not create more runs in half the PA’s, as you suggest. Holt has never played 611 PA’s. It’s been years since he was close.

The WAR you are referring to is 1.3 vs. 1.2, which, if you know anything about WAR, is a meaningless difference. Far greater spreads are a wash. Your point about the difference in plate appearances, however, is well taken.

          Fwiw, Holt’s OPS+ was 101 to Puig’s 100, also pretty much a wash.

Why aren’t the Rangers in on Puig? Woodward is familiar with him and they could use another corner outfielder; assuming Gallo plays center again. I mean, why else would they include DeShields in the Kluber trade?? Besides, once Choo is gone then either Gallo or Calhoun can fill that role eventually paving way for an eventual Taveras promotion.

That’s not even true. Puig sometimes makes bone-headed plays trying to do too much on the field, and he is a bit hot-headed when it comes to the opposition ON THE FIELD. But he has an excellent track record off the field. He is very active in charities, especially children’s hospitals. That is a borderline libelous take.n him.

Yeah, I was going to mention this too. Unless I’ve missed something since he left LA, all of his off-field issues date to his first year with the Dodgers, which if I remember right was two speeding tickets and a shoving match in a bar. He really cleaned up his act after that, but some won’t ever give it a rest no matter how many years ago that happened. Honestly I believe they really just dislike the guy for his theatrical playing style, which admittedly is polarizing. But I bet years from now when he’s out of the game fans will remember him as somebody who was kind of weird and different but in a way that was always fun to watch.

There is a better chance that Jacoby Jones is an all star at somepoint then cam Gibson hitting above .200 in the majors. He’s older then Jacoby Jones snd has never played about AA. Woodrow and Robson are tiny and have absolutely no power and can’t hit a high enough average to warrant a mlb chance. Troy stokes is a classic AAAA player similar to Travis demeritte. And trust me iv watched countless of these players game’s in the minors. The tigers have 0 major league outfields in the minors that are major league ready to closest being Daz Cameron. Detroit would greatly benefit from signing a stop gap player(puig,Santana, pence, etc) there is a reason those players haven’t gotten a mlb shot and won’t get one

I think Puig signs in the middle of Spring Training as teams learn their rosters. Brock Holt may sign shortly after Spring Training to maybe Cards, Reds, or Rangers. Holt (I believe) could be holding out for additional years on a contract. He is probably getting one year offers and want additional year(s). I think he could get a 2 year deal from any club AAV 5-8 million a year.

Puig has a major attitude problem and that is scaring clubs away. I could see Puig playing in Boston if Betts is dealt. If not there, his best option is a team like the Pirates who will not be contending this year. Have a good year and keep the attitude in check, go for a solid contract if he manages to do all the right things. It’s hard to believe he would, but he’s options are very thin.

I wouldn’t sign a guy with the first name of Brock to more than a minor league deal. The best Brock was Lou Brock. The only other Holt I can think of is Lester Holt and I would definitely not sign him to a baseball contract; I’m not sure he’s even played baseball before. Then I would trade a SubWay sandwich to Boston for David Price and ask them to pay at least 80 million dollars of the rest of his contract. Double meat on that sandwich, by the way.

Puig’s stats last year are better than Holts career numbers.

Different roles. Holt had been a consistent guy off the bench, utility, play everywhere guy. And he still has a better attitude than Puig.

Exactly. Why are people on here hyping up Brock Holt so much? He’s just an ordinary utility player with little power and a decent OBP. His only value is in his ability to play different positions. And Puig’s alleged attitude problems are so overblown. He’s a far better player and a more significant addition to any team than little Brock Holt with his 23 career homers.

This is an article about Holt and Puig. Holt plays good defense at several positions and gets on base. He’s a great bench piece that most teams would benefit by having. Puig is a starting OF with a lot of baggage and discipline issues. Only a few teams would benefit by having him in the starting lineup, and I doubt he wants a bench role.

Puig vs. The Rock who wins?

Puig is 29 at 6’2″/240 lbs and The Rock is 47 at 6’5″/260 lbs. In a wrestling ring, I’d still give it to The Rock as he’s got more technical training and experience. Maybe boxing too with height and reach advantage but I can’t be certain. Any other competition requiring speed and endurance has got to go to Puig who still trains to play a pro sport.

If the Red Sox wind up trading Betts and Price to LAD and don’t get an OF in return… any chance the Sox could look to sign Puig to a 1-year “show-me deal” I think it could potentially work out for both sides. Puig should be able to do well with Fenway’s dimensions and (assuming Price and Betts go) the Sox would hypothetically have the $ below the luxury tax to sign him… so it could be a win-win and even with Puig’s antics and inconsistencies on the field at times. I do still think he has AS-level talent… will he ever really get his head on straight and live up to the raw skills? idk but I definitely think he has the talent to have a big season this year, wherever he winds up.

Last two years Holt is a .285/.365 hitter. Wonder if Cora did a number on him. Could be why teams are skeptical.

Holt was injured in 2016 and 2017. The two years before that, he hit about .280 and had an OBP of about .340.

I would like to see Puig sign with his Cuban brothers and play for the White Sox. Abreu is the team White Sox team leader and WILL keep Yasiel in check.

Holt is probably looking for a $20-mil for 3 years type deal when he should probably setting on $8’ish for 2 years. Until he and his agent drop that price it might just be Puig. The race is on.

At least you’re not trying to hide your trolling anymore with bad baseball takes. Now it’s just flat out lies. But at least you’re letting everybody else see that for yourself. Might be time for another name change, troll.

Was this directed at Marner, Jimmer or me? Not quite sure since you didn’t properly address anyone. Plus your constant teary-eyed comments along with your self-clicking the thumbs up button for self-validation is getting a bit old.

I think Holt is looking for 3-years and will have to settle for 2 or even 1. Probably will fall short of MLBTR projections now that the offseason is late. MLBTR wasn’t out to lunch with their assessment of Holt. Not at all. Bad take? Nah. But thanks for your enlightening take. Or was that just name-calling and low hanging fruit picking again?
