Quick Hits: State Plan, Cape Cod, Dalkowski

By Connor Byrne | April 24, 2020 at 9:34pm CDT

A three-state plan is reportedly on the table for Major League Baseball in 2020, but it may go beyond that. Ken Rosenthal says (via Fox Sports) that MLB could go to five, 10 or even 12 states in an effort to make a season happen. MLB has no idea when a season could potentially begin, but “there is a lot of motivation” among team owners to get things underway, according to Rosenthal.

  • The coronavirus pandemic forced the Cape Cod League to cancel its 2020 season Friday. “The decision was based on the health concerns and safety needs of all involved,” the league announced. “Following CDC guidelines and medical recommendations, the league determined it would be impossible to guarantee the safety of players, coaches, umpires, host families, volunteers and fans during this unprecedented health crisis.” The season had been scheduled to begin June 13, but league executives unanimously voted to call it off, and it’ll be the first year without the college summer league since 1946. As noted by Teddy Cahill of Baseball America, considering the league’s importance for scouting and development, it’s a major blow to the players involved who won’t get to further prove themselves in 2020. Plenty of high-end talent has come out of the league in the past. According to the CCBL, “One in every six Major League Baseball players has played in the Cape Cod Baseball League.”
  • MLBTR extends its condolences to the family and friends of former Orioles minor league left-hander Steve Dalkowski, who passed away of COVID-19 at the age of 80, per Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant. Dalkowski never pitched in the majors, but he nonetheless made quite a mark on the sport. Joe Posnanski of The Athletic recently wrote an interesting profile of Dalkowski, who could be both incredibly dominant and incredibly wild at the same time. He once struck out 24 and walked 18 in a game, and was also the author of a no-hitter in which he totaled 18 punchouts and free passes apiece; those were just some of the many statistical oddities in his career. There’s no footage of Dalkowski during his playing days, but Cal Ripken Sr. estimated that his fastball clocked in at 110 mph. Ted Wiilliams once called him “the fastest pitcher in baseball history.” If you’re familiar with the movie “Bull Durham,” the character of Nuke LaLoosh was based on Dalkowski. He also helped inspire the Steve Nebraska character in “The Scout.”

why are they doing this adding extra states isnt going to help. might as well keep all teams playing as they normally do now.

The more places available to play the easier it would be to have a somewhat normal season. California isn’t likely to let their teams play at home, NY possibly not either. They are likely trying to find more of a regional plan where players could spend some time at home every so often

Why rule out Northern California? It really depends on the number of Covid-19 cases.

California will not allow sporting events of any kind to take place in the state for the remainder of 2020. Governor Newsom made that announcement a few days ago.

        • Howie415

He didn’t say that. Why make things up? He was talking about large gatherings of people. He didn’t set a date when things would change.

How does that make him an idiot? Safety of public comes first.

Not really. It depends on the governor and he isn’t going to be helping.

He didn’t set a date. He is going by the numbers. Why risk people’s lives?

He didn’t set a date when it would be safe to have large-scale public gatherings. So, I don’t know where you are these projections. He is relying on science. Do you hate science? How is ensuring public safety irresponsible? And, Republican Governors have said the same thing.

        • Howie415

You are making no sense at all. The banning of large crowds has been in place for over a month, six months before the start of the college football season. There are no gyms open in California; I don’t know where you are getting that idea. Allowing 40-100k people to gather in close area when a highly infectious deadly virus is running through the population is dumb. Public safety is more important. Science may come up with a cure on July 1st. Or, they may not. Be realistic.

MLB owners know there will be no 2020 season because the MLBPA has made it crystal clear that its members will not accept salary reductions under any circumstances. the owners continue to float these season proposals because at some point They will announce that they have a workable plan but they can’t move forward because the greedy players refuse to agree to salary reductions.

If you really don’t think the owners would rather pay players full salaries for a partial season than have no season at all, you really need to take a business class

        • ctyank7

And if this scenario prevails, the players will have to accept blame. For once they will have mis-calculated and lost. In a year where everyone stays home, baseball had the opportunity to show itself —albeit through TV— to more fans with less competition. And the short sighted players and their pied piper Boras will be painted as greedy fools.

        • waylonmercy

the owners informed the players union last week that the economics of a 2020 season don’t work unless the players agree to significant salary reductions. Tony Clark said the players will not agree to that under any circumstances.

Damn, that’s tough to hear about Dalkowski. The Nolan Ryan before Nolan Ryan. Real shame there isn’t any footage of him showing off that fastball. For anyone that is interested in his almost mythologic fastball, might I suggest the baseball documentary “Fastball”.

Fastball is an excellent look at that particular aspect of the game. It also dispels many myths like Bob Feller and others didn’t really through that hard as well as the fastest in game pitch. That title belongs to Ryan.

It’s a shame that just when Earl Weaver “fixed” Dalkowski’s control problems and he was set to make his MLB debut he blew out his elbow.

Players should hold some leverage in further salary reductions. Owners are really pressing for some sort of season.
