Yankees co-owner Hank Steinbrenner has passed away at 63 years of age, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. His death was caused by a long-running illness and “was not related to COVID-19,” per the report.
Hank Steinbrenner, the eldest child of long-time Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, had been listed as general partner and co-chairperson of the team along with his brother, Hal Steinbrenner. As Sherman explains, it once seemed that Hank would ultimately take over operation of the team.
When the patriarch passed away in July of 2010, his four children — including Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal and Jessica Steinbrenner, each listed by the team as vice chairpersons — became general partners in the ownership of the Yankees. Hal was ultimately tabbed as the managing general partner and has chiefly operated the ballclub over the past decade.
MLBTR extends its condolences to the Steinbrenner family and the Yankees organization.
RIP
2020 has been riddled with the most notable deaths I’ve ever seen in one year and it’s only April. R.I.P Hank Stienbrenner.
R.I.P. Mr. Steinbrenner
RIP
This has been one crappy start to a new decade. yeeesh…
R.I.P. Hank!
RIP Mr. Steinbrenner
Wow..RIP Mr. Steinbrenner. My condolences to his family and friends.
Rest in peace and condolences to the family. Yikes this year sucks this far.
Hal will have to hold the fort for the Yankees and the Steinbrenners now.
RIP
RIP
Oh no, RIP Hank!
Rest In Peace.
Can we just get a restart on 2020?
Try shutting it off and turning it back on
You need to take the cartridge out and blow on it, then restart it
It’s an update and Microsoft refuses to fix it.
id prefer if we just went back to 2019
I’d rather skip to 2021 than have to re-live 2020 again!
Oh, “darn,” turning it off and turning it on didn’t work. Now I’ll be on the phone with Rajiv (aka “John”) in India for two hours!
damn
A Yankees fan and i’m just shocked, 28 is coming soon, both Hal and George will watch from above.
Hank bore a strong resemblance to his dad. RIP
Is this the first death in New York NOT attributed to COVID-19 this year?
In all seriousness, RIP to Hank.
I hear in the end, Hank had real difficulty breathing, so I’m sure the CDC will still count this one as a COVID-19 death, you know, for accuracy.
I feel for you. Another slap in the face of Dear Leader.
Does it matter since testing for the virus is lacking so much. There will never be a accurate count of who died from the virus since many people are being buried and cremated without being tested. Even one more death is to many from this virus.
RIP
Sad news. Condolences to his family
RIP. sad news for sure
Wow. Was unaware he was ill so this news comes out of nowhere.
Bet wishes to his loved ones during this difficult time.
So sorry to hear of this. 63 seems way too young. On days like this, I’m not so much a Red Sox fan as I am sad for our collective baseball family.
Not trying to be insensitive in the slightest. RIP and best wishes to his family. I wonder how the team was divided among the 4 kids percentage wise as well as who gets his shares. I am operating under the assumption that they go back to the other 3.
Legally speaking the shares would go to Hank’s estate, unless otherwise described in his will or other legal documents pertaining to the ownership of the team. At least according to my state’s laws, NY could potentially be different.
With the recent valuation of the NYY around 5 billion, even a 1/4 share is 1.25 billion in assets.
The estate taxes on that kind of amount have to be HUGE. I wondr who will pay it, and how, short of selling a decent interest share in the team
94 yankees? Really? You are not being insensitive. Just dumb. Not your bidnes.
Oh and you are operating under the assumption . . . Who writes your script?
My condolences to the Steinbrenner family and Yankee nation. 2020 has been a pain!
Just awful, way too young.
R.I.P. Hank. You were taken too soon. Condolences to the Steinbrenner family.
This is not the way I imagined the decade starting. RIP, Hank.
RIP a legend for sure. Also, is it really necessary to put that he didn’t die as a result of COVID19? I feel it is safe to assume that unless otherwise specified. It doesn’t need to be stated every time someone in the sports world passes.
George Costanza is so distraught.
