Yankees Have Over Half A Billion Dollars On Books Past 2020

By Jeff Todd | May 14, 2020 at 4:33pm CDT

2020 salary terms are set to be hammered out in the coming days. But what about what’s owed to players beyond that point? The near-term economic picture remains questionable at best. That’ll make teams all the more cautious with guaranteed future salaries.

Every organization has some amount of future cash committed to players, all of it done before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. There are several different ways to look at salaries; for instance, for purposes of calculating the luxury tax, the average annual value is the touchstone, with up-front bonuses spread over the life of the deal. For this exercise, we’ll focus on actual cash outlays that still have yet to be paid.

We’ll run through every team, with a big assist from the Cot’s Baseball Contracts database. Next up is the Yankees:

Yankees Total Future Cash Obligation: $612MM

*Giancarlo Stanton (after 2020) and Gerrit Cole (after 2024) can opt out

*total reflects that Marlins to pay $30MM if Stanton does not opt out

*Zack Britton contract includes opt-out opportunity after 2020 if team does not exercise 2022 club option

*Jacoby Ellsbury (released) still owed buyout on 2021 club option, pending grievance

*total does not include J.A. Happ vesting option ($17MM) with 165 innings/27 starts (will likely be pro-rated for shortened season)

I don’t think Stanton is going to opt out. With his injuries, it’s more likely he stays.

he was never opting out as almost the entire contract pays out late.

If he performed as expected, without injury, then there was a good chance he would’ve opted out. A healthy Stanton hits 60 plus dingers a year in NYC and his cannon of an arm maybe gets him a gold glove but alas, woulda coulda shoulda maybe might.

I still think he’ll be more than fine if healthy, but he was / is pegged for mostly DH duty. I think that shows what the Yankees think of him in the field… Serviceable defense is all anyone could hope for due to his lack of range.

That’s an awful lot for the amount of high caliber free agents and raises they’re going to have to give out over the next two years though.

Plus arbs plus incoming free agents plus 10 more if they want to keep gardner on the option –

They will need some Sps with Pax leaving and Tanaka although they will probably resign Tanaka- Will be real hard to keep this team under 200 mill next year- Have to take care of Dj as well

Judge about 16-17, Sanchez around 9 Torres around 6. Voit, Urshela, Kahnle and Andujar should be 3-4ish each. That’s over 40 in arbitration for those players alone.

He would normally have been owed the full amount because he was released, but the Yankees informed the union that they weren’t going to pay him because he sought outside medical assistance. There’s a grievance pending about that.

Happ isn’t getting those innings this year, and Ellsbury contract is being disputed. Next year the Yanks will have more money to spend than they have had in the last 5 years. Besides they make over 800 million a season, they have money to burn!

      Would be pro-rated –

      81 games would be 82.5 inns –

I too see a manipulation from the Yanks but I view that as good business not unethical- If Happ pitches every 5th day he will get the option kicked in though- Def interesting to watch how they approach this

revenue sharing replaces a cap. for the teams that use it effectively it has paid off. a cap hurts players more but also could control some of the albatross contracts. Yankees have only given the highest contract twice in the last 15 yrs. those smaller market teams offer those stupid contracts for short term fans and hope a bigger market takes it on the last cpl years. e.g. arod, Kevin brown, randy Johnson, Machado, Soriano etc.

They’ve got cole, Stanton and Hicks for $75mil a year. Leaves cash man with an extra $100mil or so to comfortably fill out a team every year. Not so bad, especially if the outfielders get healthy and cole stays that way.

In an alternate reality, Cano stays with the Yanks and they don’t sign ellsbury.

      Wakes up*

In his prime, giving max effort tho, cano is too tier.

Nearly all of that money is dedicated to just 2 players, Gerrit Cole ($288M post 2020) who was just signed and fans were clamoring for and Giancarlo Stanton.($188M per the article).
NOTE: Stanton is actually owed $218M including his buyout however $30M of that 218M is paid by the Marlins.

Seems like a good value to me

And the 2.5 million hes owed in 2021 is not his salary it’s what is guaranteed. There is a team option for 2021 at 10 million with a buyout of 2.5

And people still like to talk about the Dodgers being the worst like it’s 2015. Dodger derangement syndrome. The Yankees should be the brunt of the jokes with their disgusting payroll and no championships to show for it. The Dodgers have been mostly homegrown for years now and never sign big contracts

Ok NODH you may have to eat your words when they sign Betts. Tell me who have the Yankees signed to HUGE dollars recently besides Cole. They traded for Stanton, Chapman wasn’t a HUGE deal, DJ last year at 12 a year was decent, Hicks only 10 a year. It’s not like the Yankees of old. Ellsbury was long ago. CC, Tex, and AJ were over 10 years ago.

Oh boy it’s a graded for contract not a Free agent one!!… it doesn’t matter

They have 22 spots to fill and 75m taken up for the foreseeable future. They’re either paying the tax yearly, or about to let some talent leave

Let’s just reduce the number of MLB Teams to 8 AL and 8 NL Teams. Every year the playoffs will consist of the same playoff teams every year. Yankees and Red Soxs play 60 times a year, then the Cubs and Dodgers play 60 times a year. Won’t have to worry about small markets competing with large markets because there will be only large market teams and revenues from TV will all be the same.Sounds like fun.
