2020 salary terms still need to be hammered out. But what about what’s owed to players beyond that point? The near-term economic picture remains questionable at best. That’ll make teams all the more cautious with guaranteed future salaries.
Every organization has some amount of future cash committed to players, all of it done before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. There are several different ways to look at salaries; for instance, for purposes of calculating the luxury tax, the average annual value is the touchstone, with up-front bonuses spread over the life of the deal. For this exercise, we’ll focus on actual cash outlays that still have yet to be paid.
We’ll run through every team, with a big assist from the Cot’s Baseball Contracts database. Prior entries can be found here. Next up is the Cardinals:
*Includes remaining bonus payments owed to Paul Goldschmidt, Miles Mikolas, and Dexter Fowler
*Includes buyouts on club options in Carlos Martinez, Paul DeJong, Matt Carpenter, Andrew Miller, and Kolten Wong contracts

With no season in 20/20 yet help the Cardinals with their horrible contract decisions with Nikolas and Fowler.
vtadave
Actually, you don’t really know any baseball.
Iknowmorebaseball
With no season in 20/20 yet help the Cardinals with their horrible contract decisions with Mikolas, Fowler, Wainwright, Molina and Carpenter. Card fans are not the wises thinking they have a good team. Cards were headed for a battle with the Pirates who will be the Centrals last place team. Now they can come in 2021 with a much better financial situation to get some solid free agents aThey will be very dangerous in 2021

The worst part of this poor quality comment, is you double posted it, after revising it, and STILL couldnt be bothered spending 10 seconds to proofread it. Nice job.
youngTank15
The critic is back, don’t insult someone and run away.
clepto
…and the idiot is back i see. Planning on spouting any more stupidity today, little guy?
Iknowmorebaseball
No little one! Are you upset? Like little bit….
youngTank15
I said nothing to you in the beginning for you to insult me, don’t insult me unless I insult you.
clepto
how about you just sthu, since you are generally a moron and low quality commentor. Clear enough, mouth?
youngTank15
I will not, nothing I said warrants you to insult.
Iknowmorebaseball
I think you comment is poor quality!! It actually doesn’t make sense my old goat

Jesus Christ!!! Are you guys adults???
Why don’t you guys go out on the playground and fight it out?? Or at least get the hell off here!!!! All 3 of you.

They willingly signed Waino for 5 mill 1 yr- They will probably do the same next year/no biggy, little risk, little payout, great for the fans
Molina will re-sign
Carp Fowler still on the books for 2021, Mikolas till 2024
They will look almost the same in 21 imo- 22 is where I think some Big new faces appear
Iknowmorebaseball
Oh my, Carp and Fowler still have another hug? Ok I agree with you that 2022 will be the year then. They have good young players and signing a few impact players in 22 when money is off the books will get them back to the world series
Deleted Userrr
Think losing a year of surplus value from Flaherty and Dejong hurts them more than shedding a year of Mikolas and Fowler helps them.
Binnington50
You don’t think due to the lost revenue, that Dewitt will find a way to spin this thing and come up with reasons why they are not going to attack the free-agent market when the time comes? If you really think they are going to be a big player in free agency, you haven’t been paying attention.

Not relevant to my comment
EndinStealth
NO ONE is going to be a big player this off season. May see a record for one year contracts.
echozulu88
Given their recent “big spending” in the free agent market maybe it’s better that they don’t…
stan lee the manly
Lol. In no way, shape, or form is this team bad enough to be fighting to stay out of the cellar. Their pitching unit as a whole is set up to be very, very strong this year yet again, and that was good enough to win the Central.
The only team that improved was the Reds, while the Cubs and Brewers arguably got weaker by standing pat and/or letting big bats walk. Not sure where the logic in your claim is coming from.
jkinser20
Iknowmorebaseball HAS to be a troll. How can you post this bad of takes on every article and consider yourself to be an educated fan
chefly1
When you say you know more baseball when are you going to start showing it????
The Human Rain Delay
I think we are looking at little to no business in 2021 for STL via FA
Books look nice 22 for the big free agent class- I dont think there will be too many exstensions till then with all the uncertainty from both sides so the Fa class should stay somewhat intact till then-
Geez, it seems like since Colby Rasmus they have tryed to piece together an OF and it just hasnt worked internally or thru free agency- They have aced the pitching though, especially internally and that has, and will always keep you relevant (especially in a weak Div) Dejong is a major bargain moving forward as well
philbosanquet
How do you figure there will be little to no business? They have $99M in committed salaries for 2021, along with 7 players that will be 1st time arb-eligible and 2 more arb-2. Unless they decide to reduce payroll, they should have in excess of $50M to invest before next season.
The Human Rain Delay
They have 110 committed with Wong- With arbs that will be closer to 130-
I dont see them exceeding 150 so they might have 20 to spend…. I think that goes towards Molina and Waino 2021 ….
I dont see the room for many new faces till 2022……. small piece here or there maybe but nothing big
The Human Rain Delay
Not to mention they will probably pick up Millers extra 9 mill as well putting them close to 120 out the gates-
Just not that much wiggle room and not a great fa class either coming up (depth wise or at the top)- They are pretty deep though and those young OF’ers need some abs sometime….
I dont think this is by any means a death wish for them…they easily have the best staff in their div……..Hell the worst staff is probably closer to the second best than the 2nd best to the Cards moving forward ( Cincy losing Bauer/Disco)
EndinStealth
Honestly doubt the pick up Miller. He needed a good season to warrant that. His 2019 wasnt enough.
echozulu88
Taveras’s death really messed up that OF and it’s future. Probably wouldn’t have Fowler’s contract and who knows where that money would have gone.
The Human Rain Delay
Indeed truly sad, he was going to be a very fun player to watch and probably a fan favorite
I always felt Rasmus left a room dirtier than when he came in it if you know what I mean… Then you always had Daddy defending the kid to top it off
dmarcus15
Cards are set with home grown OF Thomas, Carlson, O’Neil and Bader. Plus several young OF coming up quick.
ImAdude
Weeeeeee! Maxwell the Pig approves of signing aged veterans. It’s just a cute story to see Wainwright and Molina suck up money and be mediocre. Maybe Carpenter can play until he’s 40 and make another $100M too. That would be so neat.
The Human Rain Delay
To be fair getting 171 inns (31 starts) of 102 era + from Waino at 5 mill on a year to year basis is highway robbery
While Molina might not generate 20 mill worth of results these days If I had to overspend on 1 player in the MLB it would be hard not choosing him – Im sure he will sign for less moving forward as well and Id want a piece of that as well if I was STL
Chatdawg09
Poor Bill DeWitt. He’s hardly going to make any money despite having a few profitable veterans and a strong young nucleus…
Dom2
MLB is OVER. Foreign leagues are the only ones left.
