Eduardo Rodriguez Dealing With Heart Issue Related To COVID Diagnosis

By Mark Polishuk | July 25, 2020 at 9:06pm CDT

The COVID-related health problem that led the Red Sox to shut Eduardo Rodriguez down for a week is related to his heart, WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reports.  “There seems to be a strong possibility” that Rodriguez is suffering from the inflammation of the heart muscle known as myocarditis, which has been observed in multiple patients recovering from COVID-19.

Rodriguez tested positive for the coronavirus prior to the start of Boston’s summer camp and had a rough time dealing with symptoms, as he told reporters.  However, he was cleared to join his teammates on July 17 and seemed to be on track to miss relatively little time at the start of the season prior to the setback.

Any heart problem is naturally cause for concern, and while the specifics of Rodriguez’s setback weren’t known earlier in the week, Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said at the time that the left-hander’s “minor complications” were enough for the club to take it as cautiously as possible with Rodriguez.  Roenicke did said that he expected E-Rod to pitch at some point in the 2020 season and that “we’re really hopeful that this is going to clear up in a short time.”

Such a scenario would obviously be great news both for Rodriguez’s health and for the thin Red Sox pitching staff, which could sorely use the lefty back atop the rotation.  2019 saw Rodriguez enjoy the finest of his five MLB seasons, as he finished sixth in AL Cy Young Award voting and posted a 3.81 ERA, 2.84 K/BB rate, and 9.4 K/9 over 203 1/3 innings.

And yet, you don’t need to die to have crippling or life changing effects after you don’t die from the virus.

They say around 10%, give or take, suffer from permanent lung or heart damage from the virus. That’s a complication the flu doesn’t give.

Here in town there’s a 30 year old marathon athlete who caught it. 2 months later she still can’t walk 10 feet without stopping for oxygen. No prognosis for further recovery.

She’s not dead. How many like her, or eduardo, are not counted in the toll?

thank you for the story… Unfortunately, Children and athletes and people who were very health before the Virus will be disabled for life.. there are multiple reports of brain/Neurologic damage, to go with heart and lung and other organ damage and the long term effect are very scary.. ” There is evidence of direct involvement of the virus with neurons, and also the cytokine storm and inflammatory mediators can cause damage to the central nervous system. This is manifesting itself not only in neurologic clinical findings, but also psychological findings. We’re seeing patients post-discharge struggling with psychological challenges, almost like PTSD. And, we’re also seeing some cognitive defects in some people that are very disturbing.” news.berkeley.edu/2020/07/08/from-lung-scarring-to…

COVID-19 is defeating the US physically and mentally.

I’m an American living in Asia and very recently wrapped four months in California/SanFran. Every facet of the US battle against the virus fails – that’s at the National, State and city levels. No real contact tracing, mandatory quarantines and even simple temperature checks are almost non-existent (since March, in Asia you’re temperature checked every time you enter any type of public/retail building). The US is discretionary distancing without any enforcement, due to politics on both sides, except for voluntary goodwill. Asia has Social Distancing Ambassdors which have meter-maid authority; in the US one can only imagine the push back.

As the virus isn’t under control in the US, it’s no wonder that the media, in all forms, regularly sounds the basement alarm…

You’re right. Mayors are meant for ribbon cutting, not managing worldwide pandemics. I think the only time I ever recognized a mayor besides my own was 9/11. Now a disaster is affecting every single state in America, which probably needs a coordinated response and all I see is mayors. From a lot of my experiences, if a boss told me, “ I don’t know, just do what you think“, it was because they didn’t know what they were doing. I’ve come to learn wrong guidance is better then no guidance, in a position of leadership, everyone working towards the same goal. (This does take into consideration you are qualified and give the right guidance the majority of the time). These days there is no guidance given from the higher ups, but plenty of criticism. No one is right 100% of the time. Can’t be afraid to make a mistake and own it, if you want to move up in the chain of command.

Its not a hoax. But the numbers are way wrong, every positive test is a different case identification number. So one person may be counted for many cases.

Even if you survive the virus, which is the protesters mantra, you run the risk of that serious complication because it in itself has dire complications if ignored. The flu doesn’t have that frequency of complications seasonally that this virus has. I think the world is changed forever.

Henry Owens – total misfire. Watched him pitch against the Jays in TO and I was surprised that he was so highly regarded. Looked like a 4-A player all the way. Sox need Rodriguez back, the starters are just not going to get it done minus Rodriguez. Bullpen will be burned out early and often.

THRD, four times? A glitch will sometimes occur but four? Anyway, Halo may not have inferred it was a hoax but he has belittled the pandemic, comparing it when without a cure or effective/preventative treatment to control this disease, there just isn’t anything to truly compare this to at this point in time. Years from now, we might look at things differently but as we sit in the active stage (beginning still? middle? end?), it’s just guessing and that’s the big problem.

I shared a story about a friend’s 30 year formerly perfectly healthy daughter that worked in the health care system. She became sick with covid-19 and now still does not feel well months later. She now has permanent lung damage, 50% capacity in her left lung. She is also now suffers from asthma where she did not previously. He dismissed her saying until it happens to an athlete, he is right and dismissed my thoughts. Yes, I will jump on his comments now as wrong when he so arrogantly put me down. Its likely he is not commenting now because he was sadly proven wrong and does not want to admit it.

The smart play is to try to eradicate it because we don’t want it if we don’t have to have it. Takes a bit of effort though, and that’s too hard for some people it seems.

A friend’s husband is a geriatric physician responsible for two nursing facilities. She’s the head of social services at an area hospital and they have her 96 year old mother living with them. With what I’ve heard, to me they are amongst the true heroes of this generation. A little off topic but anyone who doubts this pandemic, why not volunteer your time. Another person I know transports blood, what he saw months ago just making deliveries to NYC area hospitals has caused PTSD. Although the North East is doing better today compared to other areas, the damage in some cases just doesn’t stop. This has the potential to be worse than Viet Nam. I don’t want to be negative but just clicking your heels like some have done is worse. I was taught to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Our problem has been the dividing of this country of course due to politics.

NY is not even half open. All you have to do is look at the trains and subways. I took them for over twenty years. Fortunately I now work from home and do business via Skype and Zoom when needed. I simply will not get on public transportation until this is over. It simply is impossible to prevent the spread. It can be mitigated but not stopped by efforts.

When car accidents become contagious, maybe your point will be valid.

Car accidents are contagious. People catch them from their bartenders all the time.

Oh, bartenders fault? Wasnt the choice made by the individual then? Right in line with todays thinking….its someonelse’s fault.

As their should be. Any bar/bartender stupid enough to serve alcohol to someone who continues to show signs of intoxication, and then lets the person get behind the wheel should be penalized. But that’s going away from the main point of this discussion/article.

          Get well soon, ERod

    The linked report says

“According to a source (Who?), Rodriguez is dealing with a condition involving his heart.

There seems to be a strong possibility (truly scientific) the specific affliction is called “myocarditis” which involves the inflammation of the heart muscle. “

Lol, this is whats called journalism these days?

    Even if it is

    From wikipedia

“In 2013, about 1.5 million cases of acute myocarditis occurred. While people of all ages are affected, the young are most often affected. It is slightly more common in males than females . Most cases are mild.In 2015 cardiomyopathy, including myocarditis, resulted in 354,000 deaths up from 294,000 in 1990.The initial descriptions of the condition are from the mid-1800s.

    Relax people.

PEDs can (can) lead to myocarditis. Not saying Rodriguez has been on something the last few years. But one leads to another and leads to a hard time dealing with Covid-19. Also leads to asking if that motivated guys to bail on the season.

If as many people died from auto accidents as from COVID-19, auto insurance would cost more than a new car! Honestly, what are some people smoking? Oh, that’s why they can’t wear masks. As you were.

And now a comment on death counts and the data curve. Deaths are certainly undercounted, that is not even remotely debatable. The curve is headed back up at about 3% growth per day, albeit much slower than the 12% growth per day in the first rise. That is still unacceptable as we were at a decent decay rate of 2% a day until reopening without proper protocols and behavior. We will pass 150,000 counted deaths very soon, the true number is closer to 200,000. Again, this is unacceptable, but much of the ghastly results are due to improper human behavior. We are leading the world in ignorance and therefore, deaths.
