Marlins Claim Mike Morin

By Jeff Todd | July 28, 2020 at 1:02pm CDT

The Marlins have claimed righty Mike Morin from the Brewers, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports on Twitter. The Miami organization is continuing to gather big league-capable players amidst a coronavirus-driven roster reshuffling.

Morin, 29, split the 2019 campaign between Minnesota and Philadelphia, logging a combined 4.62 ERA with a 26-to-10 K/BB ratio in 50 2/3 frames. Morin punched out 95 hitters in his first 94 MLB frames from 2014-15 but has since seen his strikeout numbers plummet. He made the Brewers’ Opening Day roster but was quickly jettisoned when the Brewers welcomed southpaw Eric Lauer back from the Covid-19 injured list. Morin has had multiple effective seasons but has struggled to find consistency at the MLB level. He’ll bring 224 innings of MLB experience, a 4.65 ERA and a much better 3.60 FIP to a Marlins bullpen that is undergoing a rapid reconstruction following the team’s outbreak.

Would be nice as a fan to be able to see Sixto, Lewin Diaz, Monte, etc all being called up. But it’s gonna suck starting their service time clocks. I hope they can fill this team with a bunch of waiver claims and career AAAA guys. And I hope everyone stays safe!

They might need a few extra days since they had a few cancellations? It’s based proportionally on games of the 60 season I believe?

Can a player refused to be claimed by a team?

Morin, Josh Smith, Justin Schafer, likely Mike Foltynewitz IMO. Could see players like Eddy Alvarez, Lewis Brinson, Lewin Diaz, Monte Harrison likely getting the call as well… this thing is a mess.

I think we will see Brinson, Eddy Alvarez, and Sean Rodriguez for sure. I hope they can claim those pitchers you named especially Folty

Derek Jeter has reached out to the Marlins’ fan base to see if either of the two can pitch.

If I were any of these guys being claimed by the Marlins, I’d immediately opt out of the season and be done with it.

The Marlins have claimed three relievers since the mass mess of positive tests. Will any claimed players opt out?
