Padres Acquire Jason Castro From Angels

By George Miller | August 30, 2020 at 11:06pm CDT

11:06PM: The trade has been officially announced by both teams.

5:21PM: Right-hander Gerardo Reyes is going to Los Angeles as the return for Castro, MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell reports (Twitter link).  The hard-throwing Reyes has 26 MLB innings on his resume, posting a 7.62 ERA, 13.2 K/9, and 3.45 K/BB over 26 innings for San Diego in 2019.  Advanced metrics painted a much more favorable picture of Reyes’ performance, however, as he was hurt by a stunningly low 47.3% strand rate.

3:27PM: The Padres have acquired catcher Jason Castro from the Angels, confirms Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The 33-year-old veteran had been scratched from today’s game due to mounting trade interest, as first reported by Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The return headed to the Angels in the deal is not yet known. More than likely, it won’t be a significant haul for the Halos, given that Castro is due to hit free agency at season’s end, making him essentially a one-month rental.

Castro will head to San Diego to complement Austin Hedges in the Padres’ catching mix. The move represent more win-now aggression on San Diego’s part; they’ve been busy this trade season, already making deals for reliever Trevor Rosenthal and first baseman Mitch Moreland this weekend.

The former Astro enjoyed something of a revitalizing season with the Twins last year, with his .767 OPS representing his highest single-season mark since 2013. That was fueled by a nice power surge, as Castro slugged 13 home runs in just 275 plate appearances.

That production hasn’t quite been there this season, as Castro’s batting average has slumped below .200 and his OPS is down to .707, but we ought to be careful not to rush to conclusions given that he’s made just 62 plate appearances. He’s hitting the ball just as hard as last year while getting on base at a solid clip thanks to a 16.1% walk rate. Interestingly, he’s hitting the ball in the air more than ever, so the jury’s still out on the merits of that development.

As a result, the Angels rewarded Castro with a one-year, $6.85MM contract in the winter. Unfortunately, he only wound up playing 18 games for the Halos before being shipped out. He’ll be owed just a bit more than $1MM for the remainder of the season.

In San Diego, he’ll offer a nice alternative to the defensive-minded Hedges, who’s working with a mere .614 OPS for the year. He’s probably more capable offensively than both Hedges and incumbent backup Francisco Mejia, who’s currently on the injured list. Needless to say, there will be a bit of a defensive drop-off from Hedges to Castro, the latter of whom logged above-average framing numbers a season ago but is getting somewhat negative returns thus far in 2020.

Castro’s presence will likely squeeze the young Mejia out of some at-bats, but the Padres will be happy to bring aboard a veteran of Castro’s ilk as they gear up for a postseason run in 2020, shifting their focus away from development and towards winning.

Preller’s seat isn’t the coolest. A late season collapse and missed postseason would likely be the end of him. I’m sure he’s doing what he can to make sure it doesn’t happen.

Preller is in no danger of losing his job. His goal was to build a team that contends regularly and is actually ahead of schedule. Don’t forget the Grisham-Davies heist over the winter. He also made what appears to be a home-run hire with his manager. This the best shape the Padres organization has been in franchise history and Preller is the reason why. If he got fired, he would have another job within 72 hours. The Mets would love to have a guy like that.

@jbigz12 yeah. With more than half the teams in baseball making the postseason and with him trading for a bunch of guys who are free agents after this year or next I think it’s fairly certain Preller gets the ax if they don’t make the playoffs this year.

Cey Hey- It appears that you really like Preller or you don’t much about him. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but these are the facts. He won’t get a new job as a general manager in 72 hours not even in two weeks. No way. He is in the hot seat. Do you remembered when the Padres were ready to compete when they acquired Kimbrel? Preller admitted that they were not ready to compete and they began to rebuild again by trading Kimbrel, Justin Upton, BJ Upton, Matt Kemp, Brad Hand, among others. If they don’t make the playoff this season Preller is walking out from the front door of the Padres organization.

I really don’t think he’s on the hot seat anymore. The rebuild is paying off right now and they look like the 2nd best team in the NL.

They also really don’t lose anyone important besides Yates to FA next year so they’re built pretty solidly to compete the next 3-4 years after this. If they make the playoffs this year for the 1st time in forever there’s no way they move on from him.

          As it stands today.

Let’s say the Padres going on a losing skid and fall out of the postseason position. Preller’s as good as gone.

Unlikely that occurs, but if it does—-he’s gone. You can’t say the same for say Alex Anthopoulos or Chris Antonetti .

I’d consider his seat to still be warm.

It’s simply because he’s a left handed hitting experienced catcher. The buzz is simply that and a expiring contract on a bad team. Nobody is making him out to be more than what he is.

His defense has been great according to fangraphs. Its nice that he offers 80+ wRC+, 98 this year, but his main value is his defense.

The hype is because he offers some offense to go along with his defense at a premium position, catcher.

You can get 80+ wRC from your catcher that can walk around 10%+ and get defense? Most teams will be happy with that production.

That’s why he’s still around and why teams are interested in him.

I would. His prospect value will likely never be higher and as good as he might become, he is still just an OF. Having Mike Trout for so long should teach the Angels that no matter how good an OF is, you’re not winning without pitching. Trading Adell for a real ace would be far more help to the Angels that keeping him.

This is a terrible take. The angels have a dope roster outside of that. Adell, Ohtani, Fletcher, Heaney, Bundy, Canning and a few other pieces. They are way way closer to competing than their short fluky record would belie.

hiflew – yeah “real ace” pitchers are traded all the time right? Seriously, when was the last time an ace was traded that was not on an expiring contract? The answer is never. There are only two ways to acquire an ace SP that is not at or near the end of his contract 1. Develop them, 2. FA signing.

More importantly, Arte has to stay out of his GM’s way.

Massive, long-term commitments to the likes of Hamilton and Wilson seem very owner-driven.

Moreno’s impatience this offseason alone cost LAA the chance to acquire Ross Stripling and Joc Pedersen for the totally replaceable Luis Rengifo.

Hou made that deal because they were making a championship run, the opposite of where the Angels are now. They also gave up 4 of their top 30 prospects, a talent pool that the Angels probably could not match.

Hou had already decided they were not going to be able to sign Cole so the additional $53mil of salary they took on made no difference.

Oh, and Grienke is a FA in 2022. So Hou gave up all that talent and all that cash to have Grienke for 10 starts in 2019, maybe 10 starts in 2020, and then maybe a full season in 2021. I’d say that’s near enough to an expiring contract to not make sense for the Angels.

Arte Moreno needs to spend money on scouting and player development. Trying to build a pitching staff by spending big bucks on free agent has never worked. Look at the Dodgers and Padres. Both have starting pitchers coming out of their ears. Young, controllable starters. By the time the Angels figure it out, Trout will be long past his prime. Hideous franchise.

I’d trade Adell for frontline pitching. Look at Detroit or Cleveland as trade partners. The systems match up well for trades.

Adell is the only high school player from his draft class at the MLB level, he’s learning a new position on the fly, yet hasn’t burned a year of club control. He’s a great chip but the Angels have Marsh with Adams behind him in the outfield and absolutely nothing on the pitching side.

          Castro .192/.323/.385 in 62 PAs. 92 Ops+

          Hedges .167/.262/.352 in 66 PAs 69 Ops+

          Castro does ALOT to help.
          1. He’s left handed which means he will play against righties.
          2. He offers more offense than Hedges – 7.6% walk for Hedges vs. 16.1% this year for Castro
          3. His defense is not that much different than Hedges. I can’t attest to pitch framing for Castro.

Still. He provides the Padres, hopefully, with something they desperately need….offense from the catching position.

Catcher is primarily a defensive position. Last I looked, defense was a key component in trying to win a championship. Prellar is knocking it out of the park. As a Dodger fan, I expect Friedman to counter with some moves of his own. He’s the reason why the Dodgers are the best-run organization in the sport. The Padres aren’t quite at that level, but can certainly win any short series they’re involved in. Tatis and Machado can both carry a team for a month. The Angels should be paying attention to these two SoCal neighbors because this is how a winner is built. Pujols and Upton, huh?

He’s better, but still underwhelming. I would have preferred paying more for a catcher hitting over .250 with decent on base and some pop, worse defence, and then letting Hedges do the defensive duties.

That’s a reasonable position, although with the DH, offense from catcher is less important. Especially since the Padres are getting good offense from most every other starter.

But who was your target? Which catcher gives you that offense — reliably so, not just a fluky year — and was on the trade market?

Castro has a lifetime .231 BA with a 710 OPS considerably better than Hedges, I don’t see Mejia on the roster once he’s off the IL Castro is the insurance policy and a good back up to Hedges, Castro also hitting .250 against RH pitchers.

Dont they have a decent catcher? Austin Hedges isn’t very tough. He’s still crying over a collision against the cubs. Even though it was a perfect justified for Contreas to block the plate.

Speaking of collisions remember that intentional illegal hit on Hedges Rizzo did couple years back? When Rizzo deliberately diverted from the path to home plate to try and knock the ball loose from Hedges who gave him an unblocked path to home plate.

I can get the YouTube video if you need a reminder of the cubs being dirty.

Meanwhile the Angels are playing this game with one catcher. Hopefully they are getting a good return, at least some young minor league pitching arms.
Castro was also just playing catch in the pen when this trade was announced.

Most people in life never accomplish something that is the equivalent of winning a World Series. What you are suggesting is that most people are failures who run their lives poorly. So I guess we all should not even try. Just stay in the house, drink beer, and watch sports on TV as you do.

If Padres aren’t done dealing maybe this frees up Mejia to be included in another deal? Hasn’t been good this year but has a good prospect pedigree and is controllable.

Or another possibility is that his thumb injury is worse than originally thought and he’s not coming back anytime soon. I guess it could also be that they just don’t have faith in him right now and are going to option him to the alternate site.

Happens. The fact they took a DFA pitcher in hand and wound up getting a top 25 prospect in baseball was a miracle in of itself.

Grisham and Davies trade is looking pretty good.

So does trading Renfroe/Edwards for Pham and Cronenworth. Getting Cronenworth alone was worth Renfroe/Edwards.

Reference has Hand at 1.1. Mejia had an offensive 1.0 and defensive 0.0 but 0.6 overall (catchers never fair well on WAR). I’d say Hand had a better year but not by much. Besides his short stint with CLE in 2018 (which was excellent), he has yet to find his lights out form he had back in 2017.

Regardless of who is better, I also wonder if trading Hand left a bad taste in the mouths of the players that the Padres would try to extend in the future. He signed that extension because he wanted to stay in SD and then they trade him anyway. Did the same to Seth Smith and Yangervis Solarte.

Relievers tend to have lower WAR than starters and position players. They are specialists. Mariano Rivera had a WAR of 56.3 over his 19 seasons or about 3.0 per year. He was a unanimous Hall of Famer. Trevor Hoffman’s WAR is 28.0 for 16 seasons with a high of 4.1. Hand had a much better year than Mejia. Over his first 127 big-league games, Mejia has a WAR of 0.0. That’s not what you want from a starting catcher who is supposed to be known for his bat. A convincing argument can be made that Mejia stinks. If he didn’t, the Padres would have no reason to acquire Jason Freakin’ Castro.

It’s not an argument FOR Mejia… simply an argument that Brad Hand is an overrated reliever. The trade has been one-sided (plus CLE got Cimber) but it’s not a flop. Hand has had flashes and even seasons of brilliance, but it has been a while. Mejia has had one solid partial season. It looks like the Pads are going after another catcher (part-time) with Nola, a second-season thirty-year-old, so what do I know?

Good! Even though Castro is a free agent at the end of the season, hopefully this will signal the end of the Austin Hedges era as well. How long does it take until you realize you’ll never be even a league-average hitter? The Padres might as well teach Hedges to hit left-handed since it wouldn’t make much of a difference.

A defensive catcher like Hedges is like having another power bat in the lineup. Savvy baseball fans know this. Mike Piazza never won a World Series. John Roseboro (3 times), Steve Yeager, and Mike Scoscia not only did but were major reasons why those championships happened.

Moving forward was Gerardo Reyes a guy that was going to be on the 40 man? I feel like they were going to have to DFA him at some point to make room anyways so moving him to me doesn’t really matter.

Hard to say they’re for real when we don’t know how they’d hold up over 162 games. The Orioles, Tigers, and Marlins are all around .500 and “in the playoff hunt.” But over the grind of a full season, those three teams would likely all be in the 100-loss zone. The Padres have nine straight losing seasons. The Dodgers have won seven straight division titles, been to two World Series, have averaged more than 100 wins the past three seasons, and continue to get better every season. Before declaring the Padres are for real, can we at least wait until they have a winning record for one full season? In their first 51 years, they have had 14 winning seasons and made the post-season just five times. Hold off on those brags, The team is making progress but still have a ways to go. When it comes to developing players, the Dodgers are way ahead of them in cranking out quality major leaguers.

Think of all the additions they made this year.. Rendon, Castro, Bundy, Teheran. They got a top line manager and pitching coach. All that and they are 11 games under .500. They still have 2 fewer wins than the Marlins, despite playing 6 more games.

Yo, in any other year, this is still considered “Early” and if you cut the injured ohtani starts the Angels are pretty close to zero run differential. This teams offense is pretty stacked for the future and all the other commitments are coming off the books. If bundy and Heaney are for real and Canning takes a step forward, this team competes to win the west next year.

Dont fall for small sample size.
