11:06PM: The trade has been officially announced by both teams.
5:21PM: Right-hander Gerardo Reyes is going to Los Angeles as the return for Castro, MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell reports (Twitter link). The hard-throwing Reyes has 26 MLB innings on his resume, posting a 7.62 ERA, 13.2 K/9, and 3.45 K/BB over 26 innings for San Diego in 2019. Advanced metrics painted a much more favorable picture of Reyes’ performance, however, as he was hurt by a stunningly low 47.3% strand rate.
3:27PM: The Padres have acquired catcher Jason Castro from the Angels, confirms Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The 33-year-old veteran had been scratched from today’s game due to mounting trade interest, as first reported by Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
The return headed to the Angels in the deal is not yet known. More than likely, it won’t be a significant haul for the Halos, given that Castro is due to hit free agency at season’s end, making him essentially a one-month rental.
Castro will head to San Diego to complement Austin Hedges in the Padres’ catching mix. The move represent more win-now aggression on San Diego’s part; they’ve been busy this trade season, already making deals for reliever Trevor Rosenthal and first baseman Mitch Moreland this weekend.
The former Astro enjoyed something of a revitalizing season with the Twins last year, with his .767 OPS representing his highest single-season mark since 2013. That was fueled by a nice power surge, as Castro slugged 13 home runs in just 275 plate appearances.
That production hasn’t quite been there this season, as Castro’s batting average has slumped below .200 and his OPS is down to .707, but we ought to be careful not to rush to conclusions given that he’s made just 62 plate appearances. He’s hitting the ball just as hard as last year while getting on base at a solid clip thanks to a 16.1% walk rate. Interestingly, he’s hitting the ball in the air more than ever, so the jury’s still out on the merits of that development.
As a result, the Angels rewarded Castro with a one-year, $6.85MM contract in the winter. Unfortunately, he only wound up playing 18 games for the Halos before being shipped out. He’ll be owed just a bit more than $1MM for the remainder of the season.
In San Diego, he’ll offer a nice alternative to the defensive-minded Hedges, who’s working with a mere .614 OPS for the year. He’s probably more capable offensively than both Hedges and incumbent backup Francisco Mejia, who’s currently on the injured list. Needless to say, there will be a bit of a defensive drop-off from Hedges to Castro, the latter of whom logged above-average framing numbers a season ago but is getting somewhat negative returns thus far in 2020.
Castro’s presence will likely squeeze the young Mejia out of some at-bats, but the Padres will be happy to bring aboard a veteran of Castro’s ilk as they gear up for a postseason run in 2020, shifting their focus away from development and towards winning.
solaris602
Gotta be the Padres.
Francys01
I think is the Oakland Athletics that will acquire him.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Looks like the Padres are going all in on this poker game.
jbigz12
Preller’s seat isn’t the coolest. A late season collapse and missed postseason would likely be the end of him. I’m sure he’s doing what he can to make sure it doesn’t happen.
Orel Saxhiser
Preller is in no danger of losing his job. His goal was to build a team that contends regularly and is actually ahead of schedule. Don’t forget the Grisham-Davies heist over the winter. He also made what appears to be a home-run hire with his manager. This the best shape the Padres organization has been in franchise history and Preller is the reason why. If he got fired, he would have another job within 72 hours. The Mets would love to have a guy like that.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
lol
wild bill tetley
If SD missed the expanded playoff he was absolutely fired. His job might still be in-jeopardy depending on how things play out.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@jbigz12 yeah. With more than half the teams in baseball making the postseason and with him trading for a bunch of guys who are free agents after this year or next I think it’s fairly certain Preller gets the ax if they don’t make the playoffs this year.
Francys01
Cey Hey- It appears that you really like Preller or you don’t much about him. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but these are the facts. He won’t get a new job as a general manager in 72 hours not even in two weeks. No way. He is in the hot seat. Do you remembered when the Padres were ready to compete when they acquired Kimbrel? Preller admitted that they were not ready to compete and they began to rebuild again by trading Kimbrel, Justin Upton, BJ Upton, Matt Kemp, Brad Hand, among others. If they don’t make the playoff this season Preller is walking out from the front door of the Padres organization.
CNichols
I really don’t think he’s on the hot seat anymore. The rebuild is paying off right now and they look like the 2nd best team in the NL.
They also really don’t lose anyone important besides Yates to FA next year so they’re built pretty solidly to compete the next 3-4 years after this. If they make the playoffs this year for the 1st time in forever there’s no way they move on from him.
BigFred
Preller is in his seventh year as the Padres’ GM. What was the timeframe for his goal to build a team that contends regularly?
Lovinmlb
Guy isn’t going anywhere. If team has melt down its not from a lack of talent. I am not a huge fan of the guy. I wouldn’t have paid for Myers hosmer or Machado. But his trades have been great this year.
nowheretogobutup
All three of those high paid guys are raking this year and the reason along with Tatis and Chroneworth were 3 games ahead in the playoff picture.
jbigz12
As it stands today.
Let’s say the Padres going on a losing skid and fall out of the postseason position. Preller’s as good as gone.
Unlikely that occurs, but if it does—-he’s gone. You can’t say the same for say Alex Anthopoulos or Chris Antonetti .
I’d consider his seat to still be warm.
Judge_Smails45

Pads or Mets?
mgomrjsurf
Maybe with Bundy or another Pitcher for Naylor and so on.
petersdylan36
I would do that in a heartbeat if I were the Padres.
I don’t have faith in Naylor
bkbk
LOL. Padres havent been competitive and so long that they forgot there are two teams that care about how a trade goes.
Welcome boyzzz!
Padres458
What?

Its an embarrassing trade proposal. Naylor is a DH prospect with average OBP.

Lol for naylor lol .

I see Naylor, Mejia and a top prospect for a good SP from Rangers or M’s

I bet its the Marlins
kingcong95
If it’s to the A’s again, my guess is Austin Allen.
i like al conin
A low level RP lottery ticket would be a nice return. But realistically, he won’t bring back anything.
JaysFan_
I hope it’s the jays!!!
bravesfan
The guy has only had 2 offensively decent years. The hype is a bit puzzling even though his defense is fine
andrewgauldin
It’s simply because he’s a left handed hitting experienced catcher. The buzz is simply that and a expiring contract on a bad team. Nobody is making him out to be more than what he is.
Marvels MAGA Man
His defense has been great according to fangraphs. Its nice that he offers 80+ wRC+, 98 this year, but his main value is his defense.
The hype is because he offers some offense to go along with his defense at a premium position, catcher.
You can get 80+ wRC from your catcher that can walk around 10%+ and get defense? Most teams will be happy with that production.
That’s why he’s still around and why teams are interested in him.
bravesfan
Angels need to sell everyone on that roster not named trout or Rendon. Brutal amount of money being spent to continue to be near bottom feeders
DVail1979
Not named Trout or Rendon huh? So you’d trade off Jo Adell?
hiflew
I would. His prospect value will likely never be higher and as good as he might become, he is still just an OF. Having Mike Trout for so long should teach the Angels that no matter how good an OF is, you’re not winning without pitching. Trading Adell for a real ace would be far more help to the Angels that keeping him.
kingcong95
A team that has that kind of pitcher to offer (e.g., CLE) would have concerns about Adell’s ability to hit and not make mental mistakes.
bkbk
This is a terrible take. The angels have a dope roster outside of that. Adell, Ohtani, Fletcher, Heaney, Bundy, Canning and a few other pieces. They are way way closer to competing than their short fluky record would belie.
Philliesfan4life
Arte Moreno needs to spend money on the rotation. And now next year how about they trade for Wilson Contreras or sign Wilson Ramos
hossmandu
hiflew – yeah “real ace” pitchers are traded all the time right? Seriously, when was the last time an ace was traded that was not on an expiring contract? The answer is never. There are only two ways to acquire an ace SP that is not at or near the end of his contract 1. Develop them, 2. FA signing.
bkbkbkbk
They went after all the good ones and not the fake good. They’re trying. If canning and Heaney take the steps they’ve shown in flashes that’s like be massive
Prospectnvstr
A dope roster is very bad. A deep roster is very good. Haven’t you ever learned that nothing good comes from dope, unless it’s truly for medical purposes?
agentx
More importantly, Arte has to stay out of his GM’s way.
Massive, long-term commitments to the likes of Hamilton and Wilson seem very owner-driven.
Moreno’s impatience this offseason alone cost LAA the chance to acquire Ross Stripling and Joc Pedersen for the totally replaceable Luis Rengifo.
kingcong95
There must have been something else going to the Dodgers in that deal that Moreno isn’t saying in order to spare bad feelings.
schellis 2
Last year with greinke. If you mean a front end arm in arbitration or earlier that is more difficult. Perhaps sonny gray.
hossmandu
Hou made that deal because they were making a championship run, the opposite of where the Angels are now. They also gave up 4 of their top 30 prospects, a talent pool that the Angels probably could not match.
Hou had already decided they were not going to be able to sign Cole so the additional $53mil of salary they took on made no difference.
Oh, and Grienke is a FA in 2022. So Hou gave up all that talent and all that cash to have Grienke for 10 starts in 2019, maybe 10 starts in 2020, and then maybe a full season in 2021. I’d say that’s near enough to an expiring contract to not make sense for the Angels.
agentx
I hope that’s the case, Kingcong95… for the Angels’ sake.
Orel Saxhiser
Arte Moreno needs to spend money on scouting and player development. Trying to build a pitching staff by spending big bucks on free agent has never worked. Look at the Dodgers and Padres. Both have starting pitchers coming out of their ears. Young, controllable starters. By the time the Angels figure it out, Trout will be long past his prime. Hideous franchise.
hiflew
When was the last time a real ace was traded that was not on an expiring contract?
Zack Greinke in 2019. Trevor Bauer in 2019, Marcus Stroman (maybe not ace, but pretty good) in 2019,
Gwynning
hossmandu- does Clevinger count?
HalosHeavenJJ
I’d trade Adell for frontline pitching. Look at Detroit or Cleveland as trade partners. The systems match up well for trades.
Adell is the only high school player from his draft class at the MLB level, he’s learning a new position on the fly, yet hasn’t burned a year of club control. He’s a great chip but the Angels have Marsh with Adams behind him in the outfield and absolutely nothing on the pitching side.
Philliesfan4life
I would rather trade Marsh , Adell is going to be the next Trout. Marsh and another prospect could net them something good.
hiflew
I think you left out the words “I hope” before Adell. He is not destined to be a great player, but he does have the potential. But so do many others. And most of them will not come anywhere close to Trout.
HalosHeavenJJ
The team needs to trade one. Last I checked 5 outfielders and no pitchers was a bad thing.
dave frost nhlpa
You need to be very careful when you say things like that.
Stevil
Worth noting Austin Nola isn’t in the lineup for Seattle and they recalled Hudson.
DVail1979
Austin Nola isn’t being traded … It’s just a day off for him … I don’t think Nola has even reached arbitration yet
hiflew
When has that ever stopped DiPoto from trading someone?
hiflew
This comment did not age well. Excellent analysis Stevll.
andrewgauldin
If the pads, I’m going to hope it’s for pitching, maybe Bachar or Bednar
HalosHeavenJJ
Yet another reason to root for the Pads. Good luck. And I hope it’s a decent return.
Philliesfan4life
I hope they run down the dodgers
BleedingBlue162232
Good luck with your hopes there, lol.
pcwizblue
Maybe hope for some pitching coming back the Angels way.
ukpadre
As a Padres fan, even I’d say you have more hope of Mila Kunis turning up to your birthday party and declaring her undying love to you than the Pads catching the Dodgers. However, postseason is a different kettle of fish, so there they have half a chamce.
bluejays92
To the Padres they said during the Jays broadcast.
GoLandCrabs
Preller is trading just for the heck of it now.
Magnum
Do you even know what is going on with their catcher production?
GoLandCrabs
Castro does nothing to help. He stinks too.
Marvels MAGA Man
Castro .192/.323/.385 in 62 PAs. 92 Ops+
Hedges .167/.262/.352 in 66 PAs 69 Ops+
Castro does ALOT to help.
1. He’s left handed which means he will play against righties.
2. He offers more offense than Hedges – 7.6% walk for Hedges vs. 16.1% this year for Castro
3. His defense is not that much different than Hedges. I can’t attest to pitch framing for Castro.
Still. He provides the Padres, hopefully, with something they desperately need….offense from the catching position.
Orel Saxhiser
Catcher is primarily a defensive position. Last I looked, defense was a key component in trying to win a championship. Prellar is knocking it out of the park. As a Dodger fan, I expect Friedman to counter with some moves of his own. He’s the reason why the Dodgers are the best-run organization in the sport. The Padres aren’t quite at that level, but can certainly win any short series they’re involved in. Tatis and Machado can both carry a team for a month. The Angels should be paying attention to these two SoCal neighbors because this is how a winner is built. Pujols and Upton, huh?
ukpadre
He’s better, but still underwhelming. I would have preferred paying more for a catcher hitting over .250 with decent on base and some pop, worse defence, and then letting Hedges do the defensive duties.
Billy Baroo
That’s a reasonable position, although with the DH, offense from catcher is less important. Especially since the Padres are getting good offense from most every other starter.
But who was your target? Which catcher gives you that offense — reliably so, not just a fluky year — and was on the trade market?
nowheretogobutup
Castro has a lifetime .231 BA with a 710 OPS considerably better than Hedges, I don’t see Mejia on the roster once he’s off the IL Castro is the insurance policy and a good back up to Hedges, Castro also hitting .250 against RH pitchers.
5toolMVP
Unnamed sources say Padres have set aside a case of peanuts and bucket of bazooka gum prior to today’s game…more to come.
lazorko
They’re not getting Castro for anything less than Dubble Bubble.
Mrtwotone
Padres are getting everyone
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Dont they have a decent catcher? Austin Hedges isn’t very tough. He’s still crying over a collision against the cubs. Even though it was a perfect justified for Contreas to block the plate.
kingcong95
Neither Hedges nor Mejia have been hitting very well. Hedges can call a game and has a decent arm, but that’s it.
mrpadre19
Hedges can’t hit but he’s more than a “decent arm”.
He is the best defensive Catcher in baseball…..who can’t hit.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Best defensive catcher that can’t hit. Thats saying a lot.
Magnum
Blah blah blah
Marvels MAGA Man
Speaking of collisions remember that intentional illegal hit on Hedges Rizzo did couple years back? When Rizzo deliberately diverted from the path to home plate to try and knock the ball loose from Hedges who gave him an unblocked path to home plate.
I can get the YouTube video if you need a reminder of the cubs being dirty.
Marcus was already taken
Yeahh I remember that, such a dirty ass play by rizzo
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Yeah, Rizzo seri0usly should have been suspended for that. His ONLY goal there was to injure Austin Hedges.
pcwizblue
Meanwhile the Angels are playing this game with one catcher. Hopefully they are getting a good return, at least some young minor league pitching arms.
Castro was also just playing catch in the pen when this trade was announced.
bkbk
For Weather maybe?
5toolMVP
The Angels need it to rain 100% pitching.
CNichols
As in Ryan Weathers? I’ll have some of whatever you’re having man, that’s ridiculous.
He’s like a top 10 prospect in the 2nd best farm system. That’s not a piece you trade for a rental replacement level catcher.
5toolMVP
This is Eppler we’re talking about…Don’t worry, It’ll be for the 40th ranked padre prospect, probably a scrappy infielder or 27 yr old RP with awesome spin rates.
andrewgauldin
Angels would be lucky to get anything more than salary relief. Getting a minor leaguer in return is a win.
bkbkbkbk
Lol. Salary relief on an expiring deal.
andrewgauldin
Arte traded a first round draft pick to get rid of Cozart. Sure the difference in money is huge, but I’m sure Arte is involved as he always is, and money is definitely a factor.

Yeah, you won’t be getting Weathers for a Catcher hitting .192.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
For a pending free agent who has barely been replacement level this season?
Marvels MAGA Man
For weather? Sure. The padres can buy some vacation rentals out in San Diego. The angels can send their employees and players down any time to enjoy that San Diego Sunshine.
For Weathers the pitching prospect? No.
Marvels MAGA Man
92 OPS+. Serious upgrade offensively. Padres have received horrible production from their catchers offensively.
Is his batting average low cause of the shift?
Tsizzle27
As an Angels fan, the dude couldn’t hit a lefty to save his life. But he’s had a few clutch hits in late situations and can help turn a lineup over. He’s solid behind the plate and is a great pitch framer. Good guy to platoon with against righties.
nowheretogobutup
Castro has a lifetime .231 BA with a 710 OPS much better than Hedges or Mejia besides Castro has good framing and rates high on D.
asuchrisc
What about for Mejia and a 25-30 pitcher? How long until Campusano makes his debut?
Marvels MAGA Man
33 year old catcher. Free agent at end of the season. Highly doubt Mejia goes back.
Reggie Lawson, Mason Thompson, or another high draft pick pitcher that could use a change of scenery is the angels best bet.
andrewgauldin
I hope you’re joking
Javia
This was probably for cash considerations. You won’t be getting gold for garbage.
fivetwos
Good thing Yanks didnt need a LH bat.
Cashmans “data” shows otherwise.
Sanchez is a disaster.
What a poorly run franchise….I mean considering unlimited payroll basically.
andrewgauldin
Die hard Yankee fans are just as annoying as Yankee haters… horrible take. They compete for a playoff spot each and every year. How many other teams can say that?
Orel Saxhiser
Poorly-run franchise? Compared to who, the small-market Mets? Not winning the World Series does not make a season a failure. Most people in life never accomplish something that is the equivalent of winning a World Series. What you are suggesting is that most people are failures who run their lives poorly. So I guess we all should not even try. Just stay in the house, drink beer, and watch sports on TV as you do.
ChangedName
Has anyone who is under control for 2021 been traded yet? Heath Hembree?
kingcong95
Mitch Moreland and Mychal Givens were traded today.
ChangedName
Oh, okay, thanks.
Orel Saxhiser
Prellar is kicking butt. It reminds me of collecting baseball cards as a kid and trading for the cards needed to complete a series. He’s got a checklist and knows exactly what he wants. He then makes the moves he has to make to tick off the little boxes. Moreland will be a great guy to have in a post-season scenario.
CNichols
If Padres aren’t done dealing maybe this frees up Mejia to be included in another deal? Hasn’t been good this year but has a good prospect pedigree and is controllable.
Or another possibility is that his thumb injury is worse than originally thought and he’s not coming back anytime soon. I guess it could also be that they just don’t have faith in him right now and are going to option him to the alternate site.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Hand trade looking like a major flop right now
CNichols
There’s definitely a higher risk when go for a single top 100 guy instead of getting multiple guys ranked like 5-15 in a system and you’re right, as of now that risk did not pay off.
Marvels MAGA Man
Happens. The fact they took a DFA pitcher in hand and wound up getting a top 25 prospect in baseball was a miracle in of itself.
Grisham and Davies trade is looking pretty good.
So does trading Renfroe/Edwards for Pham and Cronenworth. Getting Cronenworth alone was worth Renfroe/Edwards.
No GM has ever won every trade they’ve made.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@Marvels MAGA Man He also traded Trea Turner and Max Fried and traded Yasmani Grandal for Matt Kemp.
Marvels MAGA Man
Also acquired Tatis Jr, Paddack, and Strahm.
Thats cool though. Like I said. No GM has won every trade they’ve ever made.
Orel Saxhiser
Every GM has made those kinds of trades, even the great ones like Friedman and Epstein.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@Marvels MAGA Man Strahm has a 3.66 ERA as a Padre. As a reliever, that’s not all that special.
Tatis and Paddack are the only reason he hasn’t been fired yet.
Marvels MAGA Man
Sure, let’s include Strahms production when they tried him as a starter. Thats not biased.
5.06 era as starter. 2.66 as reliever. But go on.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Still wouldn’t put that trade on the same level as Tatis or Paddack.
mrpadre19
Cronenworth and Grisham say Hi!
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
So do Luis Urias and Xavier Edwards
Marvels MAGA Man
Cronenworth, Turner, Urias. Match each with their numbers this year.
.280/.357/.360 and 96 OPS+
.350/.410/.617 and 170 OPS+
.348/.408/.587 and 172 OPS+.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Urias. Turner. Cronenworth. Not relevant anyway because they weren’t traded for each other.
Also, if you are trying to defend Preller it’s probably best not to bring up that a guy he traded away has a 170 OPS+
nowheretogobutup
Torrens will be included in a trade before tomorrow night along with a top prospect for a SP along Or possibly Nola from the M’s, or possibly a SP from the Indians or Rangers
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
It’s not as if Hand has been lights out for Cleveland. He’s been good but not great and Mejia arguably had about as good a year as Hand last year.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@Tipsy McStagger Hand had a 1.6 WAR for CLE last year while Mejia was a 0.5 in SD…
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
Reference has Hand at 1.1. Mejia had an offensive 1.0 and defensive 0.0 but 0.6 overall (catchers never fair well on WAR). I’d say Hand had a better year but not by much. Besides his short stint with CLE in 2018 (which was excellent), he has yet to find his lights out form he had back in 2017.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
I was using Fangraphs.
Regardless of who is better, I also wonder if trading Hand left a bad taste in the mouths of the players that the Padres would try to extend in the future. He signed that extension because he wanted to stay in SD and then they trade him anyway. Did the same to Seth Smith and Yangervis Solarte.
Orel Saxhiser
Relievers tend to have lower WAR than starters and position players. They are specialists. Mariano Rivera had a WAR of 56.3 over his 19 seasons or about 3.0 per year. He was a unanimous Hall of Famer. Trevor Hoffman’s WAR is 28.0 for 16 seasons with a high of 4.1. Hand had a much better year than Mejia. Over his first 127 big-league games, Mejia has a WAR of 0.0. That’s not what you want from a starting catcher who is supposed to be known for his bat. A convincing argument can be made that Mejia stinks. If he didn’t, the Padres would have no reason to acquire Jason Freakin’ Castro.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
It’s not an argument FOR Mejia… simply an argument that Brad Hand is an overrated reliever. The trade has been one-sided (plus CLE got Cimber) but it’s not a flop. Hand has had flashes and even seasons of brilliance, but it has been a while. Mejia has had one solid partial season. It looks like the Pads are going after another catcher (part-time) with Nola, a second-season thirty-year-old, so what do I know?
Orel Saxhiser
No Padres fan should have any complaints about the job Preller has done. Thanks to him, the franchise is in the best shape in its entire history.
DarkSide830
Torrens will never get a shot
agentx
Yeah, I’d like to see Torrens get a non-Rule 5 year look as well.
Would it have been too much for the Angels to ask for Torrens in exchange for Castro?
nowheretogobutup
Torrens will be traded before tomorrow night
agentx
I had not been as sure of that as you. Good to see Torrens and France with more frequent playing time ahead in SEA.
Superstar Car Wash
Good! Even though Castro is a free agent at the end of the season, hopefully this will signal the end of the Austin Hedges era as well. How long does it take until you realize you’ll never be even a league-average hitter? The Padres might as well teach Hedges to hit left-handed since it wouldn’t make much of a difference.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
Hedges makes an excellent perennial platoon and backup. He’s worth holding onto for that if the money allows.
Orel Saxhiser
A defensive catcher like Hedges is like having another power bat in the lineup. Savvy baseball fans know this. Mike Piazza never won a World Series. John Roseboro (3 times), Steve Yeager, and Mike Scoscia not only did but were major reasons why those championships happened.
Vizionaire
will take gore!
wild bill tetley
Some Jays fans were hoping for Castro. We don’t need an all-glove no stick with a big price tag. We already have enough no stick catchers with enough D near league minimum.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Not a fan of Castro but I am a fan of this trade for the sole reason that they shipped Gerardo Reyes out
Arnold Ziffel
San Diego had the top farm system in MLB, so they can afford to move a few prospects.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Whether or not they can afford to move prospects is irrelevant. What is relevant is they get back greater or equal value to what they gave up?
CNichols
They have to be able to roster those players/prospects though.
Moving forward was Gerardo Reyes a guy that was going to be on the 40 man? I feel like they were going to have to DFA him at some point to make room anyways so moving him to me doesn’t really matter.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
I get all that. I just hate people trying to defend bad moves on the grounds that “they can afford to do it.” The move either makes sense from a value and competitive window perspective or it doesn’t.
Lovinmlb
Castro trade I like the least. If Reyes gets some control he is a elite back end reliever. And I appreciate a defensive catcher so didn’t see the dire need. Still nothing to cry over losing but great pick up for Angels. Moreland can be traded again for similar or better prospects.
Orel Saxhiser
If you factor in player development, the Dodgers have the best farm system.
The Human Rain Delay
Padres are easily the second best team in the NL today-
Everyone crosses their fingers Rd 1 but this teams for Real –
Would love to see a NLCS LAD vs SD
Prellers had a good week and 24 hrs left…….. Lynn makes a ton of sense for this team…stay tuned
Orel Saxhiser
Hard to say they’re for real when we don’t know how they’d hold up over 162 games. The Orioles, Tigers, and Marlins are all around .500 and “in the playoff hunt.” But over the grind of a full season, those three teams would likely all be in the 100-loss zone. The Padres have nine straight losing seasons. The Dodgers have won seven straight division titles, been to two World Series, have averaged more than 100 wins the past three seasons, and continue to get better every season. Before declaring the Padres are for real, can we at least wait until they have a winning record for one full season? In their first 51 years, they have had 14 winning seasons and made the post-season just five times. Hold off on those brags, The team is making progress but still have a ways to go. When it comes to developing players, the Dodgers are way ahead of them in cranking out quality major leaguers.
The Human Rain Delay
Dont know how you correlated all this back to LAD
Now if Atl had some pitching maybe Not but imo they are the second best team in the Nl- The development of Lamet so quickly certainly has helped…he looks as good as Any Nl pitcher right now-
I could care less about the last 75 years tbh,/// right here right Now….that offence is Fire, they have many electric arms and now have a very deep squad with few holes
Lovinmlb
Great trade for Angels. I always loved this guys stuff. If he can ever get some better control he is a back end reliever for sure and a good one. Definitely nice upside for Castro.

Think of all the additions they made this year.. Rendon, Castro, Bundy, Teheran. They got a top line manager and pitching coach. All that and they are 11 games under .500. They still have 2 fewer wins than the Marlins, despite playing 6 more games.

Yo, in any other year, this is still considered “Early” and if you cut the injured ohtani starts the Angels are pretty close to zero run differential. This teams offense is pretty stacked for the future and all the other commitments are coming off the books. If bundy and Heaney are for real and Canning takes a step forward, this team competes to win the west next year.
Dont fall for small sample size.

i despair. so many blind people only touch the little toe of an elephant and brag about ‘seeing’ a whole elephant.

Its always Cardinals and Yankees fans. Like clockwork.
Have you seen the “best fans in baseball” twitter feed?

Padres need pitching to be successful that’s where there lacklustered at the most with only paddack and pomerance pitching the best in the whole rotation

Lamet and Davies have out pitched Paddack this and Pomeranz was signed to pitch out if the pen, which he has all year.

He may be our #2 starter behind Bundy next year.
