Latest On Ronald Acuna Jr.

By Connor Byrne | August 12, 2020 at 10:00pm CDT

AUG. 12: Acuna missed the Braves’ loss to the Yankees on Wednesday, and manager Brian Snitker said he’ll sit out their series against the Marlins from Friday to Sunday, per Bowman. Acuna is dealing with inflammation.

AUG. 11: The Braves made outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. a late scratch before their game against the Yankees on Tuesday because of left wrist discomfort. He’ll undergo further evaluation in New York on Wednesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com tweets.

Acuna attributes this injury to a recent slide, per Bowman, and it’s not yet clear whether it’s serious. Regardless, it’s obvious Acuna isn’t someone the Braves can do without for long – especially during a 60-game season. The all-world 22-year-old had his best game of the campaign Sunday, a 4-for-4, two-home run rampage against the Phillies which drove up his numbers after an early season slump. In all, Acuna has slashed .258/.372/.515 (145 wRC+) with four homers in 78 plate appearances.

The Acuna-less Braves went with an outfield alignment of Adam Duvall, Ender Inciarte and Marcell Ozuna in their series-opening loss to the Yankees. They also have Nick Markakis and Austin Riley on hand if Acuna misses time, but losing him would be a nightmare scenario for a Braves club that’s already shorthanded. Mike Soroka, Cole Hamels, Ozzie Albies and Chris Martin rank as the most prominent members of the team who are currently on the injured list.

I’d say…how can this get worse, but I’m sure Freddie would become the first person to get Covid twice or Soroka & Acuña to pull an Andrew Luck and just retire. Too late for us to join the Big10 conference and just try again in the spring?

COVID-19 is from the same virus as the common cold. The common cold has no cure and once had a bigger affect than it does today.
Herd immunity may well not be possible with COVID-19.

Not spelling names with the correct symbols to indicate pronunciation of the name is just lazy journalism.

Do the Braves have any interest in Miguel Andujar or Clint Frazier with Acuna J.r hurting? I would like to hear a prospective from a Braves fan. Frazier can play left. Andujar can play some 3rd base or lst base to spell Freeman at times. I feel Andujar is better then Austin Riley with the bat. Maybe not with the glove though. Are the Braves higher on the lefty Kyle Fuller or the lefty Tucker Davidson in the minors? And who is further along? Much thanks

@jhawk1000- It definitely sounds like Matthew Boyd, or Robbie Ray could help you right now. It might be worth it to see what you would have to give up for one of them. My guess is Ray probably would be cheaper then Boyd. Mike Minor could be an option for you guys also if Texas falls out of the playoffs this year. I doubt they will though. I know Minor came up thru your farm system and he’s from around there.

jhawk1000- yes, I definitely hear you about Boyd. I wouldn’t want to give up Clint Frazier for him. I’d rather have Joey Wentz from Detroit. Not really trusting Boyd in a big spot. If I can’t get William Contreras, Kyle Muller or Tucker Davidson from Atlanta probably will just hold on to Fraz. I think Minor would be better then Lynn in Atlanta. Is Minor better then Ray? Maybe. However If the Braves come away with Lance Lynn & Robbie Ray at the August 31st deadline they will definitely win the division.

@Questionable_Source- Andujar is absolutely better then Riley. How can you judge someone when they’ve only had 14 at bats this season? That makes no sense. Every team in the majors would be happy to have Andujar. Right now the Yanks have not spot for him. He can’t play leftfield. So Austin Riley can play leftfield so I guess that makes him better, right? smh

In the prospect book I have catcher Shea Langeliers higher rated then William Contreras. That being said could Contreras or Alex Jackson be traded in a Andujar or Frazier package as has been reported? I know you have Flowers & d’Arnaud catching at the major league level right. Yanks need a back-up catcher with Higgy hurt. And they desperately need a young southpaw in the minors. They don’t have any right now. I see Tucker Davidson is 24. I’m assuming Kyle Fuller is younger? Andujar or Frazier would just give you another weapon in that already great line-up. Both obviously are major league ready. So their both ready to play regularly

It would be madness to see the Braves trade for anything other than starting pitching right now. It’s their biggest problem now, and will continue to be their biggest problem into next year.

@eyeball710- Ok, very interesting and thank you. I didn’t know how bad or a mess your starting pitching was right now. I know Matthew Boyd and Robbie Ray could be available. I would definitely steer far away from J.A Happ right now. lol. But going back to the NL could actually help him especially if the Yankees pay his salary. He is a free agent next season. So he could pitch better then he has. His spot was just skipped for Jordan Montgomery. Maybe you guys can call up Tucker Davidson? Is he ready? Just a suggestion.

Eyeball, it wouldn’t be complete madness. They’re not going to fetch 3 capable starters in a trade. Adding offensive depth and trying to outscore everyone might be the way to go this year, unless an ace comes available.

Yank4Life- sorry but it’s Kyle Muller not Fuller. Right now I’d have to say with the state of our rotation the Braves really don’t need another OF or 3B. We’ve got to find some SP that can go more then 4 innings and give up less than 6-8 runs. Frazier might be a nice piece for next yrs OF though. You guys got any close to ready SP prospects that are worth a damn?

@jhawk1000- Ok thanks. If your rotation is bad right now maybe you can call up a Tucker Davidson or a Kyle Muller then? Not sure if their ready yet? Yanks have righty starter Clarke Schmidt, right now so close to be called up. They have Deivi Garcia and Al Abreu also. Both have great power arms but might be better suited for the bullpen. Only way the Yanks are trading Schmidt is if Frankie Lindor is coming back in the trade. Which isn’t happening this season at least.

The Braves need to stop looking from within the system to solve the current SP issue. If the Mets are out, the Braves should be all in on DeGrom. Not sure if the Mets would trade within the division, but he’s exactly what the Braves need.

@eyeball710- no way the Mets will EVER trade Jacob deGrom to the Braves. Yes, their in the same division like you said and Atlanta is better then the Mets as it is. deGrom is probably better then Gerrit Cole. It’s definitely close. deGrom will be wearing a Met’s uniform and cap for the rest of his career. So forget about him.

I’m a Braves fan, and I’d trade Contreras and a pitcher for Frazier. I wouldn’t trade Davidson or Muller, though. The Braves pitching depth is from the right side. So it’d make more sense for Atlanta to deal from that pool.

Frazier could help Atlanta, though. He’s not an absolute need, but I think some people are dismissing the idea too quickly. The DH- to my chagrin- is probably on the horizon. I’m not yet sold Pache will hit in the Bigs. It wouldn’t be a bad add.

I don’t really think Andujar fits in Atlanta, though.

@Appalachian_Outlaw- I definitely think Andujar has a better bat then Frazier. Red Thunder’s defense is better then Andy’s though. You would be off with Andujar who can play some 3rd, dh, and lst base. Just be careful about leftfield with him. lol! His bat will do the talking. Trust me. He’s only had 14 at bats he just needs to play everyday. He is definitely worth William Contreras and either Tucker Davidson or Kyle Muller. You need a starter how about Michael King or Al Abreu? King definitely looks ready to step in as a #4 or a #5. Abreu is a nice power starter or reliever with plus stuff. Fastball, curve, slider and change-up. The Yankees and Braves definitely have the makings of a trade that could really help both sides. But if givin’ a choice you gotta take Andujar over Frazier. So let’s get this trade done! Let me know.

The problem with Andujar for a National League team with an established 1B is where do you play him next year if there is no DH? Andujar’s defense is too rough at 3B for me. Plus Frazier is a Georgia kid, and he’s got a good bat.

If I were a GM, I’d do Muller and Contreras for Frazier and Abreu. I don’t think Abreu will make it as a starter, from the reports I read. I do believe he looks to have good relief stuff, though. He makes me think of Newk.

This season could end at a moment’s notice. I’m as frustrated with how the Braves’ rotation has been derailed as anybody, but you just can’t give up controllable assets for a right now fix in a season that might not even finish. If you wanna eat a bad contract and give away a throw away minor leaguer, go for it. But no major trades to win this disaster of a year.

ahale224- The Braves should be fine. They just have to do some tweaking. Lance Lynn from the Rangers or Robbie Ray from Arizona would definitely help them if they become available. How far a long is Tucker Davidson? Maybe they should call him up. He is 24 years old and probably ready. If that doesn’t work, then you definitely got to trade for a starter somewhere. I like the Braves to win the division this season.
