Mets Acquire Miguel Castro From Orioles

By TC Zencka | August 31, 2020 at 3:18pm CDT

The New York Mets swung another deal just before the trade deadline, acquiring Miguel Castro from the Orioles, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The Orioles will receive southpaw Kevin Smith, per Robert Murray (via Twitter). In addition, the Mets will be sending a player to be named later or cash to Baltimore, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

The Mets completed a flurry of deals at the last minute, also acquiring catcher Robinson Chirinos and third baseman Todd Frazier from the Rangers. In Castro, the Mets are getting another power arm from the right side to help out late in games. The 25-year-old owns a 4.02 ERA/3.71 FIP across 16 appearances this season. He strikeout to walk numbers have blown up in the 15 2/3 innings he’s logged this year with 13.8 K/9 to 2.9 BB/9. Those numbers are far better than his career norms, so at least some regression is to be expected. With just another month to go in the season, the Mets are betting the overall profile holds up.

Castro was set to make $1.05MM before prorating for the shortened season in his first season of arbitration eligibility. The Mets will retain his rights for two more seasons after 2020. Given the injury to Dellin Betances and Edwin Diaz’s struggles since joining the Mets, Castro figures to see some high-leverage opportunities over the final month of the season. Retaining his control for two years beyond this season is a win for the Mets as well. They have continually sought bullpen reinforcements in recent seasons.

Smith was the Mets’ 12th-ranked prospect per Baseball America and MLB.com. The 6’5″ Smith spent 2019 between High-A and Double-A tossing 117 innings across 23 starts with a 3.23 ERA. That showing prompted Smith to jump up the Mets prospect boards before the start of 2020. Smith, 23, could be given a look as early as this season, given the trend of debuting youngsters we’re seeing throughout baseball, but it’s more likely Smith stays in the development pool for now.

The Orioles sent a number of pitchers out in trades before the deadline, also dealing Mychal Givens to the Rockies and Tommy Milone to the Braves. They continue to rebuild under second-year GM Mike Elias.

Yeah no conflict of interest of Frazier’s former agent. You would have to be a moron to think MLB is a legit sport. Hasn’t been in 25 years. I knew the jig was up when Jeter and Ortiz were hugging each other on the basepath.

Todd Frazier had Brodie as a agent so clearly no conflict of interest.Dodgers and Mets had similar ownership problems but McCourt wasn’t pals with Selig like Wilpons so he was forced to sell while 12 years later the Wilpons still being cheap in NY Market. Can you explain why 2017 Astros were allowed to bang trash cans? Why Selig turned a blind eye to Sosa,McGuire,Bonds,Arod,Ortiz,Clemens,Luis Gonzalez? Show me a clip from the 70’s when opposing teams would hug each other in basepath. Look up Ray Fosse Pete Rose and see when it was a legit sport.

Ok, thanks. I didn’t know exactly where they were on the competing/rebuilding scale. You’re going to enjoy watching him. He’s been a work in progress, but he’s insane when he’s on.

He is fun to watch, when he’s on… some crazy movement, especially his slider. He can be homer happy if his sinker stays up but he can (and will) be a good RP, no doubt.

Yeah they shouldn’t be buying for this year. Their SP is crippled and they are 15-20. Orioles got a nice lefty starter too. But since Castro is under control I don’t mind if he helps us next year. The rangers trade is beyond stupid. We are 15-20 getting two rentals.

I haven’t heard what they’ve given the Rangers for the two veterans but it could just be Steve Cohen’s money and a bag of balls.

While that would make sense, the Mets also traded for Frazier which has to be seen as a ‘win now’ move unless I am missing something. Chirinos at least has one year left on what I would say is a Chirinos friendly salary.

I think the Mets brass is legitimately playing for this year right now. They are only two games back for 8th spot and their schedule is arguably easier in the second half. Not to mention they are on a mini-roll.

Because besides being and idiot Brodie is desperate and he is burning the house down trying to prove his worth; the Mets future be dammed!

Really Mets are in need of starting pitching now and for the future and you give up a top 12th starting pitching prospect for another reliever?

OH I forgot other key BVM additions:
      Wacka Mole who sucks
      Poorfello who sucks
Betances who is hurt again; no surprise to anyone
      Diaz Nightmare on Mets street

And how can anyone forget Keon Broxton who was out of options and we still gave up players to get him; Brodie made him sound like the next Mookie Betts; where is he now?

Brodie has the Midas touch; he should be selling mufflers

Please Cohen buy this team and end the BVM, Rojas, Diaz nightmare!

Because they’re imbeciles? Castro’s record is abysmal. He’s had some luck this year i 15 innings, but otherwise he has almost no upside.

Even with that luck Castro’s WHIP is 1.400 and he’s giving up 1..7 HR per 9. Van Wagenen is unbelievably bad. No one w a brain deals a very promising 22 yo in AA for a guy w a FIP near 5.00.

O’s fan here. Castro was a bum, but the O’s changed a few things last season and now he’s throwing 99 on the black with a 92mph changeup and wipe out slider. At times he’ll have a bad outing if his control’s off. But when he’s on he’s ridiculous.

Orioles are still in rebuild mode, regardless of the results this year. Better to build for a longer window of contention when their ready rather then go all in for a single season.

Good trade for both sides, IMHO.

Bringing Frazier back is because the team lacks in your face leadership. His value is in the clubhouse. The team is filled with a bunch of bland nice guy types, including the manager. Need someone to kick a little butt. I know the pitching staff has been devastated with injury. The line up is potentially good but seems to lack mental toughness especially with men in scoring position.

Sometimes smarts and toughness can influence an Alonso to mentally take a step back and stop trying to live up to his own stats. Need someone who is not afraid to give advise, and get into someone’s grill when needed. Currently there is no one with that type of personality. Conforto is their leader but more by example.

Baseball is probably the most mentally challenging of all sports. Normally a long season, day after day, just a slight change of approach can cause a slump. Add the pressure the New York market places on you and you can realize how a strong clubhouse voice can make a difference.

At this point the Met’s are vaunerable to left handed pitching. Their righty bats, Alonso, Ramos, Rosario are slumping. Frazier might add a spark from the right side. Even off the bench when teams bring in their lefty relievers.
