Yankees Place Aaron Judge On IL

By Jeff Todd | August 14, 2020 at 4:23pm CDT

The Yankees have decided to place outfielder Aaron Judge on the injured list, manager Aaron Boone announced to reporters including Erik Boland of Newsday (via Twitter). He’s dealing with a mild calf strain.

Boone made clear that this is only a precautionary move. While the injury is said to be merely a grade 1 strain, if that, the team is exercising ample caution with its star slugger.

Yankees fans will be forgiven for fostering greater concern than the skipper himself let on. Judge hasn’t topped five hundred plate appearances in a season since his mammoth 2017 rookie year, owing to a series of health issues.

It’s much the same situation with fellow middle-of-the-order centerpiece Giancarlo Stanton. He’s also sidelined with what’s hoped to be a mild leg muscle issue, but comes with the same sort of worrisome background. In their absence, former top prospect Clint Frazier could get a window to prove himself.

Tough blow with both power bats out (99 & 27). But if our basehitters keep awake like they were against Atlanta, we should be able to get by without rushing rehab for Judge or Stanton. The Yankees’ biggest thorn is pitching right now.

The NYY do not need either bat. They will mow every team with pitching n some hitting.

Judge, for all his talent, is never going to land that nine figure contract due to his brittleness. When you can’t be counted on to remain healthy, your value erodes.

Jose Reyes was way more productive than Judge has been. Reyes was an elite leadoff hitter for years, while Judge has had one elite season and is hurt literally all the time.

Being a lifelong Mets fan, I watched just about every game Reyes played with the team. At the point in his career where Judge is now, he was a great player but still had the ‘always injured’ stigma he was able to shake off. If the talent is there some rich turd will overpay. .

13Morgs13- no need for Yankee fans to talk up Frazier anymore. His bat is doing all the talking now. This kid is a star who I’m so glad we hung on to. On the Phillies, Fraz would be your 3rd or 4th player best player. He doesn’t have to do that here. So have lots of fun looking up at the Braves for the rest of the year.

Yes, it’s been what, two games so far and Frazier’s bat is talking? JBJ was batting close to .500 in week 1 this year and Christian Vasquez was leading MLB in HRs. You’ve got to wait until he has at least 100 PA’s to see if he’s really worth anything close to the hype Yankees fans constantly spew about him. I know the answer: he’s not.

Ceiling of a 30 HR hitter, .260 average, 30% K rate with below average defense. Those players are a dime a dozen in MLB now. He can definitely start for 8-10 teams in MLB right now but he’s never going to be a true star in this league. Yankees would be smart to hold onto him as Gardy should be done after this season and Hicks/Judge spend way too much time on the IL.

P.S. – They wouldn’t get much for him in a trade.

They do all those things, however they are big muscle bound guys. The more you lift the more injury prone. It taxes the muscle fibers, joints, ligaments, and tendons. Puts on a strain on it. John Kruk and Boog Powell drank beer and ate steaks and chicken wings. They didn’t have any muscles to pull.

Too much time in the weight room and not enough time actually playing. I think too many players over do it working out and don’t get the proper rest. Some players are just prone to leg problems. Stanton is certainly one of those and Judge is trending that way. What a waste of three hundred million for a DH who can’t stay healthy.

I’m with you there, Pasha. Baseball is better when Judge plays; however, some of the blame does fall on Judge for how he prepares his body for baseball season. Way too much heavy weight lifting and not nearly enough lengthening and ‘long muscle’ workouts. Just look up Aaron Judge workout videos and you’ll see what I mean. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is in incredible shape but those types of workouts tear muscles so the body naturally tightens/shortens them in order to repair (and grow bigger). Judge would be better served not picking up a weight again. He should be using resistant bands for strength training and spending more time with something like Yoga or Pilates to lengthen his muscles. The older you get, the less flexible you get too, so he really needs to change things up if he wants to play well into his 30’s.

Reality is that Judge and Stanton are both phenomenal and any team would love to have that combination in their lineup.

Reality is also that the jokes about when they’re going on the IL each year are accurate. As a lifelong Yankee fan it sucks; but Cash and crew need to do something about this and it’s their responsibility to do so.

If AJ and GS are going to be oft-injured, Yanks need to find suitable replacements. They cannot control calf sprains and pulled ribs. However, knowing this history, they can plan for this every single year. So far, it seems they’ve done a decent job. Fans of other teams can hammer us on this because it’s true…… and I’ll humbly accept it.

@Yankee Clipper- I truthfully wouldn’t worry about replacements for AJ & GS. We are fully offensively loaded with players like Clint Frazier & Miguel Andujar that can play everyday right now. So the offense will be there. I’m mostly thinking of acquiring a starter by the deadline like Matthew Boyd or Robbie Ray. Starting to think Mike Minor will not be available for a trade with the Rangers likely being a playoff team. J.A Happ isn’t the answer. With Sevvy out with TJ, and Domingo German out being suspended. The Yankees got to get creative before the August 31st trade deadline and get another starter for their rotation. Ray is a rental. Boyd has another year on his contract after this one.

I don’t see a reason for the team to overpay for trade assets really as we don’t even know if this weird season will finish. You’ve got Cole, Tanaka, and Paxton as top 3. I wouldn’t mind again using Greene as an opener #4. He’s been really solid in his career.

I’m not sure how much of an upgrade Ray or Boyd are to give up assets for. Both have upside and rack up the k’s but both pitch to high ERA’s. They’ve shown flashes but are now pushing 30. I feel more comfortable with them going internal.

Perksy- yes, expect Clarke Schmidt to take J.A Happ’s spot in the rotation shortly. Schmidt wouldn’t be in any trade for Boyd or Ray anyway. Not saying that pitchers like Michael King, Al Abreu, Luis Cessa, Jonathan Holder, or Ben Heller wouldn’t be. I feel that Clarke Schmidt, Deivi Garcia, and Johnny Lasagna all will still be Yanks after the deadline and so will Frazier or Andujar.

Come on. I’m not trolling, but you open up to criticism and bashing by making such a comment. Speedy recovery AJ.

PTSD Jays- Have you been watching the games lately? Frazier has been on fire. All he needs is to play regularly and get at bats. And that will either be for the Yankees or someone else. I’m biased. I want it to be with the Yankees. Not some other team. So take your time AJ and come back for the playoffs. The Yankees will be waiting for you there.

Fraizer has played two games so far! Slow your roll man

@Dorothy_Mantooth- my point is if Fraz keeps on going on this way with the bat he’ll go from trade bait to kept player. Even with Clarke Schmidt on his way up shortly and J.A Happ likely heading for the bullpen as a long man. The Yanks will likely be looking for a starter at the deadline anyway. That’s why a Boyd or a Ray fit the bill. There is no reason why a Miguel Andujar can’t net either pitcher in a trade with Fraz staying playing leftfield this season and next season especially with Gardy likely retiring after his option being declined like you were saying. I do like the slow your roll man- good stuff and funny. Thanks for the laugh. I needed it tonight. Seriously.

And wait for that first fumble in the outfield that costs you a game. Sing your tune now. Trade deadline is a little over two weeks away

There is no way Andujar alone brings back a quality starter at the deadline. While he did have a great offensive rookie year, he was hurt all of last season and he played so poorly this year (including that horrible play in LF) that they demoted him to the ATS. He has all but proven that his only true position in MLB is DH and since the NL does not have a DH next year (so far anyways), that limits what you can get back for him as most AL teams are well set at DH and not to mention, Andujar really hasn’t done anything at the plate since 2018 either.

@Dorothy_Mantooth- Are you convinced that Frazier is a star now? Or do you need to see more? All he needs is the at bats to prove how good he is. That’s all.

All great points. I do agree with Yank4 on SP. I think that is a fairly consistent weak spot middle to bottom. They should really focus on who they want to acquire and go for them in the offseason.

@Yankee Clipper- thnx. The problem is the D-Backs are going to want Frazier for Ray. I wouldn’t and the Yanks aren’t going to trade Fraz for a rental. As far as Boyd he hasn’t pitched well like Ray so maybe the Yanks can get him cheaper as well. Thinking, Matthew Boyd, Michael Fulmer, and Austin Romine for Miguel Andujar, Michael King or Al Abreu, Ben Heller, and Jonathan Holder. That deal seems fair. It definitely looks like Robbie Ray or Matthew Boyd at the deadline for the Yankees. I think the Braves will trade for one of them as well, using Davidson, Muller, Shuster, or Ynoa as the bait.

Man, I have to agree with you. Ray and Boyd have both been on their radar for a while, so it seems very logical that could occur.

@Yankee Clipper- that being said I think I would prefer Boyd instead of Ray. I would love to expand the trade with Detroit with Fulmer and Romine coming back here to NY. Austin is the perfect back-up to Sanchez. We miss him. Yanks could always expand the deal with Arizona to include Archie Bradley along with Ray. It all depends on which team would want Andujar more to get a deal done.

Yeah, more great perspective… I agree if those guys are included in the deal with Boyd. I miss Romine as the backup.

It’s a testimony to the “old school” athletes that used to play with pain.. Ripken, Jeter even the Juiced guys.. Arod Bonds.. in there prime. Never landed on DL. They played through. Now a days if a hitter has a hangnail it’s 10 days! Lol. I love to watch our lineup when fully healthy. Problem is between “resting” and injury it’s few and far between

Don’t think agents aren’t without influence. On the other side of town, Cespedes who is playing for a contract, decides to opt out. He and his agent decided that it would be better for him to do a showcase fir a contract rather than try to play this season and show everyone he either isn’t healed, isn’t motivated, or just plain lost it, or any combination of the above.

rule-5-draft-dodger- All Cespedes wants to do is hang out with beautiful Cuban women on his rancho and on his yacht. He would rather ride horses and play golf then play baseball. Last time they saw him he was hanging out with Captain Morgan when they found him later he had a little captain in him and was looking for his lost shaker of salt. Nevertheless, it wouldn’t surprise me if next season he is playing for his favorite manager, Bob Melvin in Oakland. He said that’s where he wanted to be shortly right after signing with the 3rd best team in NY. smh

It’s funny how the Braves need starters. The Yankees got a few arms that could help them right now. In Mike King and Al Abreu that could help them win the division. The Braves need to call up Tucker Davidson today and make a trade with the Yankees for a starter. A showcase start for J.A Happ on Sunday night against Boston. If he doesn’t pitch well then Clarke Schmidt will probably get his spot in the rotation. The Yankees would definitely have a interest in Kyle Muller & William Contreras from Atlanta. Andujar, King or Abreu, Heller, and Holder probably could get that done. Yanks likely are holding on to Frazier now with the injuries to Stanton & Judge.
