Yankees Place Giancarlo Stanton On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | August 9, 2020 at 8:59am CDT

The Yankees have placed Giancarlo Stanton on their 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, the team announced.  Thairo Estrada has been recalled to take Stanton’s place on the active roster.

Stanton was removed from last night’s 5-3 loss to the Rays, as manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch) that the slugger suffered the injury while running the bases in the fourth inning.  Stanton was was able to remain on the field and even advance to both third and home later in the inning to score a run, though Mike Ford replaced Stanton during the next DH at-bat in the sixth inning.

Yet another trip to the IL is ominous news for Stanton and Yankees fans in the wake of the slugger’s oft-injured status over the last two seasons, and several leg-related issues (knee, quad, calf) were among Stanton’s long list of maladies.  Stanton was limited to only 18 games in 2019 and he would have missed time at the start of a normally-scheduled 2020 season had the league not been shut down.

Though the first 14 games of the season, Stanton seemed to be in prime form, hitting .293/.453/.585 with three homers over his first 54 plate appearances.  Albeit in a small sample size, this performance continues to indicate that Stanton is one of the sport’s most impactful bats when healthy, though remaining on the field is becoming an ever-increasing difficulty.

The Yankees played Stanton exclusively as a designated hitter this season in order to keep him as fresh as possible, and with the position now open, the club could cycle several players through DH duty.  Of those on the active roster, Ford and Mike Tauchman are the likeliest candidates for more playing time, plus Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier loom as potential call-ups from the minor league camp.

It’s a shame he can’t stay healthy. If he’s not on the field, he hurts himself on the base paths.

Outside of the year he blew his ACL out, I don’t know that Brady missed more than a handful of years over his career. That’s a pretty terrible comparrison.

It’s not the one bad year people are focused on with, it’s that he’s thirty now and only managed to play two seasons without hitting the DL over his entire career. Taking out his rookie year (Since he didn’t come up until June, so that artificially skews it low), he’s averaged 118 games a season, which is pretty much the definition of injury prone.

When did Tom Brady start swinging the bat at 100MPH fastballs. The guy plays 16 games a year, not 162. Comparing baseball to football is just absurd. Get real.

You’re right. Getting hit by 300 lbs dudes at awkward angles is far less likely to cause an injury than swinging a 2 lbs stick.

Seriously, about all Brady has to do is run backwards a few steps. The guy doesn’t scramble. He hardly runs at all. The comparison is nonexistent. George Blanda? He was pulling games out when he was practically 50.

@Yankee Clipper- No brother you might be correct though. I still feel that either Andujar or Frazier will be moved for a starter by the deadline even with the Stanton injury. I know the Tigers, Braves Rangers, and Cubs all have interest in them. The Braves Supposedly would move either lefty Kyle Muller or lefty Tucker Davidson along with catcher William Contreras for Andujar. The Tigers would consider moving lefty Matthew Boyd or lefty Joey Wentz, and catcher Dillon Dingler in a package for Frazier. Other pieces would be involved in either trade.

@hockeyjohn- Okay then let’s see what happens. Yankees could always hold on to Frazier or Andujar. Just saying what has been offered to the Yankees already. The Braves and the Cubs want Andujar. The Tigers want Frazier. My guess is one is likely to be traded even after the injury to Stanton. Not over valuing either Andujar or Frazier at all.

I have not seen any report saying any of that. Teams don’t say what prospects they have interest in unless discussing trades. FANS speculate interest and make up ridiculous trades, I haven’t seen one credible source that states anyone’s interest in either of those 2 players. And that isn’t saying every team wouldn’t give one or both a shot….but not for a middle of the rotation pitcher and definitely not for a top of the rotation pitcher.

Even if it doesn’t happen the Yankees or the Dodgers are still heavy favorites to win the World Series. Isn’t that the reason for playing the season to see who will actually be there during the end? lol no worries even if the trades don’t happen

I have also read many pieces in the NY and LA media where the writer was discussing his thoughts on what their given team should do. Those articles are no better then the trade proposals made here in the comments section. Those articles are often one sided not looking at the needs of the other teams that they do not care about or write for.

We will see what happens. It is still my feeling and opinion that Yankee fans will be disappointed in the return if they trade either one or both of them.

Not why I watch baseball. I watch to see all the unknowns unfold and see which 2 teams will come out at the end of the season and fight for a championship. Do not care one bit who the favorites are….other than to watch the disappointment on their faces when the paper champs don’t make it. But hey, to each their own.

We should use this case and the DH logic to introduce a new position: the designated runner.

Nobody wants to see a guy who is over 235 pounds try and run bases. The game would be alot more fun if the hitters were do what they are paid to do. And that is hit. Plus, it will extend carrers and we all want to see our favorites play longer.

Therefore, anybody who plays catcher or is over 6’3 or 235 pounds gets a designated runner assigned to them.

I had that same idea when Travis Hafner was with the Tribe. He was exclusively a DH but seemed to constantly hurt himself running the bases. I thought he should have a runner lined up right behind the batters box to run when he hit the ball or at least have a Segue ready for him.

I could be wrong, but there is another guy that many agree had a career worthy of the hall of fame: Larry Walker. He averaged 116 games per season and quite a few were under 100. I’m not saying Stanton is Larry Walker, but it obviously is no longer the same metric by which players are judged.

Statistically, he is right behind Pujols in career OPS plus with half the years and 58th in lifetime OPS all time. I get what everyone is saying but I believe the number of games argument is irrelevant in this case.

Giancarlo Ellsbury is as he is want to do injured again. The nyy never shut up about what great shape he’s in, one of the finest sculpted athletes on this or any other planet yet a simple slide into 2b is beyond his bodies capacity to maintain it’s structural integrity.

I think I understand what you are trying to say, and I think many would agree that the advantages his strength provides is also a disadvantage because it tends to proliferate injuries. And, he is in great shape.

For all Yankees fans who are frustrated with Stanton including myself and all his injuries. Blame Cashman for getting the wrong outfielder. He should of gotten Yelich instead. The Yankees lineup would be better off and he’s a lefty for Yankee stadium also probably better on defense than Stanton. The Main piece the Marlins got for Yelich was Brinson I believe well I believe Andujar/Frazier better than him.
