Cardinals Make Multiple Roster Moves

By George Miller | September 5, 2020 at 2:23pm CDT

The Cardinals today made a series of roster moves, placing LHP Kwang-Hyun Kim on the 10-day injured list and activated Andrew Miller from the IL, via Anne Rogers of MLB.com. Additionally, they’ve swapped backup catchers, optioning Andrew Knizner and reinstating Matt Wieters from the injured list (courtesy of Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch).

According to Goold, Kim was taken to the hospital this morning due to a kidney ailment. He’ll be released today, and the Cardinals are optimistic that the lefty will pitch again this season once he undergoes treatment. His IL placement is retroactive to Wednesday, September 2.

With Kim slated to start Sunday’s game, the Cardinals will have to scramble to cobble together a starting rotation in the coming days. Indeed, Dakota Hudson, originally expected to start the second game of today’s doubleheader, will instead start tomorrow. The Cardinals will opt for a bullpen game in Saturday’s nightcap.

Kim, who inked a two-year, $8MM deal with the Cardinals following his success in the KBO, has been one of the most reliable pitchers in the St. Louis staff thus far, having notched a 0.83 ERA through his first 21 2/3 innings of MLB work (4 starts).

Meanwhile, neither Wieters nor Knizner has received much playing time with Yadier Molina hogging all the catcher reps in St. Louis, but the Cardinals will give the nod to the veteran Wieters, now healthy after suffering a broken toe. Miller will rejoin the Cardinal bullpen after missing 12 games due to left shoulder fatigue. He’s pitched just 5 2/3 innings for St. Louis this year, notching a 4.76 ERA and striking out 6 batters.

Kidney ailment that you need to go to the hospital for but released the same day … My guess would be kidney stones … I’ve had them … and if I’m correct I truly wish Kim a speedy recovery … Ive had them … its gonna hurt

Both my mom and I have had kidney stones. Worst pain I’ve ever felt. My mom, who has given birth to 4 children (one via C-Section) still said kidney stones were MUCH worse than labor. I’d never wish that pain on my worst enemy.

If it’s a kidney stone, no one on the planet could pitch with that. Good luck Kwang-Hyun

Kim was taken to the hospital Friday not today and was released Friday. Yeah betting kidney stones too. Here’s hoping for a recovery and wondering if C Mart comes in for the start now

It’s been reported that it’s a kidney infarction, a known condition Kim had been dealing with that the Cardinals were aware of. It can be treated with blood thinners, so the real concern would be cuts and bruises after taking the medication.

Just randomly looking through Wieters stats, I imagine him making the ’14 All-Star game with only 26 games played is a record minimum games for an All-Star.

Good to see that with the moves the kept Matt Carpenter on the roster and in the lineup. Says Cubs pitching.

Kim has been pretty good. The Cardinals GM MO Mr Bow-tie should of been fired years ago
For not signing Luis Robert!! Which the Cardinals totally could have signed him.

Mo also passed on Fernando Tatis Jr! Tatis Jr wanted to be a Cardinal like his dad was.. But Mozalik really screwed that one up.. The MVP of league (Tatis) And the next Mike Trout (Robert)
Could be cardinals but their not! Because of a pathetic GM and Ownership.. Then Mo said that Taylor O’Neil and Lance Thomas can make up for Osuna!! Whatever!! Marcel wanted to sign in St Louis!! The REDBIRDS need new Ownership, A new General Manager, new scouting department

There’s no way of knowing whether or not any team could’ve beaten out another for specific international signings like Robert and Tatis. Mozeliak and Girsch have made some good ones themselves such as Carlos Martinez, Mikolas, and now Kim. It’s also too early to tell just how good those two players may ultimately be in the future.

Yeah, the Cardinals probably should’ve added someone to the outfield this past offseason, but they weren’t willing to give a multi-year deal to Ozuna with all the outfield prospects they have. If Ozuna really wanted to stay in St. Louis, he should’ve just accepted the qualifying offer.

Besides, they struck gold with the Brad Miller signing, whose offense has more than made up for what they’ve lost from Ozuna.

I hate to say this. But—- its the truth. Mozeliak is not going to pick up any players from other teams better than the Cardinals already have. That’s just his standard procedure.

That procedure will work only if he looks at players day to day playing stats to determine the Cards starting lineups!! Starters should be selected by who’s hot at a certain position. Not by familiar names and long time loyalty, such as Matt Carpenter.

Who Mo has traded for not much! Or who Mo decided we didn’t need anymore!!

This lineup is better than the one we have now lol

          1. Munoz Injuried
          2. Tommy Pham: INJ. 20 games 8 stolen base
          3. Marcel Ozuna: .320 AVG 14HRS 38 rbi
          4. Luke Voit: .269 Avg 13 Hrs 28 rbi

For one the Cardinals easily could of signed Luis Robert when he was 17 yrs old. Hell I tweeted MO better sign this kid Robert in Cuba. The Yankees, Red sox, Braves, Dodgers, Cubs, Angels, Phillies, Mets were already over their spending limit internationally. The Cardinals organization is just cheap! Not paying an extra few million for a future Hall Of Famer!!!
Please stop trying to defend this moron Mr Bow-Tie!!

Yea all the OF prospects we have Lol.. Ozuna is hitting better than our entire outfield out together! Marcel wanted to sign in St Louis but again The Upper Management GM and Owners is to cheap! And they have zero clue how to evaluate Talent! Fire the scouting department to

Watching Weiters catch last nights game against the Cubs seemed like signs of things to come. Weiters dropped many pitches our jus missy picking them up. He seems either rusty in flexibility & receiving pitches or he’s just aging.

Although Weiters has done well for the Cards, plus a former All Star, I’d like to see Wieters released and Kinzner be the full time back up catcher.

At this point in Weiters career, he isn’t as good of a defensive catcher as Kinzner. Plus—Kinzner can put the bat on the ball hitting and is only going to get better.

Kinzner is a baseball educational sponge. By that I mean while being on the 25 man roster, just being constantly around Yadi, Kinzner is soaking up as much information he can to better himself both Offensively and defensively.

That’s why he needs to be with the big team until Yadi ever retires.

Right now STL is the 6th seed. H2H should make it obvious they are better than MIL & CIN & deserving of the NL 2nd place. STL could finish with less W’s but a slightly better W% than say 2nd place teams SD, PHI, COL, or SFG. Would it be scandalous to give them the better seed?

The only latitude Manfred has is the off day between the regular season & the start of the playoffs & I can see Manfred deciding things on the field. STL should prepare for that if they want to keep a higher seed.
